Hi all, According to DIN and IS standards, springs made from wire or rod with a diameter above 16 mm should be hot coiled due to specific reasons. We have consulted with several manufacturers who claim they can cold coil springs using wire or rod up to 30 mm in diameter. Could you please advise if springs made from wire with a diameter ranging from 16 mm to 30 mm using the cold coiling process would be as effective as those made using the hot coiling process? it's not pipe.it's solid iron.
Two things: If the pitch is constant, can he have a mandrel with helical grooves on it, so that the rod will guide on to it? Also can he use some hoist mechanism to lift the mandrel from lathe to avoid lifting it manually everytime? Again finally it depends on the order quantity.

I remember we occasionally made springs of various sizes at my father's machine shop, but not as large as the ones shown in the video. We used a similar set up but with the feed on auto advance on the desired pitch.

No, I asked the manufacturer and he said that it is used under large industrial washing machines because the washing machine moves a lot.
