Haha, it’s IU rabbit hole. I bet it’s going to be more wild and surprise you even more when you get into her indie b-sides, ballads/folks (it is her own genre itself), deep and poetic lyrics, 4-5 hours long live performance, not to mention her acting and her personality. Btw, I love your fun and insightful reaction with musicians perspective. Keep it up. Thanks!

You are very perceptive with your gut reaction. This song is inspired by from the 1845 fairy tale under the same title written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. IU is a very special artist and her rise to fame is a true blessing for music lovers.

The Red Shoes started as a fair tale, I think from Hans Christian Anderson. It was the basis of at least two movies that I know about. One features a ballerina. Her take on it is based mainly on the last movie.

I believe the song and MV are based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen. Which is another thing that IU does. Her song ZeZe is based on a well known children book by a Brazilian author that soon people totally mistook and in their ignorance accused IU of some ridiculous things. There is a show in Korea called the Infinity Challenge where people are mismatched pair with other celebrities and given like 2 weeks to come up with a performance. In 2014 IU participated and was matched with a much older male who is a well known and popular DJ. He wanted to do an EDM song. She however got him to go in her direction. She wrote a song based on the movie The Professional starring natalie Portman,. If you dont know the movie, Portman is a 12 year old girl who is kind of adopted by a Hitman who a totally killed her parents. The song is great and they won first place. Oh by the way you need to check out the MV for 23. It is all about Alice in Wonderland.

oh is it? Alice in Wonderland book or movie? I do remember also watching The Professional that sounds pretty cool, I dont think this song would've worked as an EDM, I would've probably wanted to not do that either

When I first listend to this song of hers I could not believe that its one of hers. It has such a different style. And the I found Obliviate and Crayon and the others form that album.man so versatile. And at that point I did not even knew BBIBBI And yes the outro is soo funny.

thanks for your reaction :) yes, mostly you're right. The MV is a homage/ inspired by old movie The Red Shoes (1948), and it has connection to Andersen story, ofc. yes, IU is unique, but strangely she's also VERY popular, lol. She has unique position in South korea entertainment industry, bcs she has art and musicality as an artist, but in same time she has popularity like a super popular idol. btw, you actually still havent seen Good Day (2010) and Through The Night (2017), her most legendary songs :)

It's very old song. I don't know much about it's theme or story but it was inspired by some play i guess. I have seen some old clips of award shows where IU has performed this song and all other idols went crazy on this. It was a very popular song and even whole korea used to sing this whenever they got lost on streets. It was like an anthem for lost people. Although her vocals are super fun in this.

Okay so I know maybe it was a bit of a stretch when I said that Good Day / YOU & I / Every End of the Day / The Red Shoes were all part of the same period in her music; I think I already admitted that The Red Shoes was the most different out of them all, but I feel like it _does_ fit a somewhat similar grandiose musical theatre vibe as the others. The fairy tale of The Red Shoes is about a girl who gets adopted by a rich lady and gets spoiled and wants to go dancing in her new fancy red shoes instead of going to church, and then the shoes take control and she can't stop dancing until, well, she asks an executioner to cut off her feet haha it's not pretty (but neither was the original version of The Little Mermaid by the same author). I guess the music video also portrays IU indulging in fun with the hedonistic party guys in the big apartment? I never analysed the lyrics to be honest, but there's probably something there. A wild song anyway 😅

  • @Killdeer25

that very well could be to! that does make sense in terms of indulgence, and there is a few other possibilities, you could probably also make a case of an OG wizard of Oz reference as well, there is enough differences that is possible. yeah... ,maybe very not so loosely related, but you did say that as well haha

Lol. You weren't far off in your interpretation. As others have mentioned the Red Shoes originated as a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale and has been adapted fairly often. The shoes are cursed and in the end, the dancer dances herself to death. In the original I think the girl hacks her feet off with an axe and the shoes keep dancing with her severed feet! But the moral of the story definitely hinges around the dangers of being vain and frivolous and materialistic. I believe the in the original, the girl in the story blew off her mother's funeral to go dancing in her new red shoes and then was condemned by someone (I forget the whole story) to never be able to removed the shoes and dance until she dies. Just your usual gruesome children's story. 😅 I read that Hans Christian Anderson's father was a shoemaker and some rich person came and had him make a pair of red shoes from leather that cost more than the shoemaker could earn in a year and then the customer was unhappy with the shoes and forced him to remake them or some such thing so that Andersen wrote a story about a selfish, spoiled girl and her cursed red shoes.

whoa! coming in with the facts about HCA! I never heard that before! the gruesome children's story is always such an interesting piece of work from back then, who would've thought lol I think that of course due to the legendary status of Wizard of Oz that was where I went to immediately after any pair of red shoes is made to be the main focal point
