Yes John, it’s about Yoongi’s life and without doubt, music is the thing that has ultimately saved his life after his battles with anxiety and depression, which is why this song is so personal to him. He’s very open about his struggles and writes many songs about it. I’m OT7 but Yoongi is definitely my bias as he’s a musical genius.

Yeah, this song isn’t about his mother. He uses the piano (his main instrument) as a physical representation of “music.” His first love is music. He talks about how he abandoned music when he was a kid and rediscovered it again at age 14. He talks about his struggles when he was an idol trainee (that line about breaking his shoulder was about when he got into an accident working as a food delivery boy to make money on the side). And how he wanted to give up sometimes but music was always there to encourage him. Suga is the member who always writes the most raw and emotional lyrics. RM writes with his (huge) brain, Suga writes with his soul.

7:02 "Grabbing my crushed shoulder, I said that I really couldn't do it anymore" This is again an instance from his real life! Yoongi met with an accident during their pre-debut days. He used to work as a part-time delivery boy and met with an accident that destroyed his shoulder permanently. He, however, did not tell Bighit about this because he was scared he would get removed from the group. Later when the company came to know they asked and told him he should have told them earlier (note that Bighit was already paying his tuition fee in full for his education, sponsoring him at the time) His shoulder pain got really bad recently and he had taken a break to get a surgery done finally, after soo many years of doing such tough, physically demanding choreo. He ate soo much pain all these years

Even among rappers, Suga's ability to be raw, open and vulnerable is unique.

Suga never makes up stories for his music, it's 100% his life story and feelings. When you listen to his mixtapes you'll learn so much about him. His love for music started with the piano and that's what the song is about, his love for music personified. He does alot in his music, personifies the topic of the song.

This is his love song to music, personified by the piano which he started playing at a young age when it was “way taller than my height” “when I touched you with my small finger” and then later “when my height became taller than yours”. I love how when his voice changes 1:54 the piano talks to him, then at a point they talk together 2:31. Music is his life and has gotten him through tough times.

Yoongi is always so introspective. His deep, personal lyrics together with his passionate delivery makes me tear up every time. Yoongi does indeed play the piano beautifully. Deachwita is his best known work but I was shaken by his solo, The Last. He is admirable for exposing his deepest demons to us. And as a lifelong piano player, I so relate to this song. You can see how passionate he is about music. Gosh, I just love his songs…

@@JohnReavesLive I am not a performer and I only play classical. In fact before BTS, I only listened to classical piano. And there was a period of about 15 years that I didn’t play and when my children started piano lessons, I started playing again. So when Yoongi says you were always waiting for me, it makes me tear up because it’s so true.

yoongi’s voice is so unbelievably powerful. the fact that he can speak so personally and share it really shows him as a person.

The lyrics always make choke up....He is having this beautiful conversation with his first love "Piano" and it is so emotional since it is a true story! Suga actually plays piano very well! It is AMAZING to think of a hard core rapper can play beautiful piano like that! I love and respect Yoongi so much!

Yes, he usually writes about his own life. If the song is emotional or raw it's about his life. Other heavy songs like this of his: So far Away The Last Dear my friend Also, I get why they'd say the song is about his mom as it's one of the interpretations of it, but the common sense is that the "main" meaning is related to his love for music or the piano. When he says that "You say: ..." he's referring to the piano, personificating it (prosopopoeia), that's why that line says something in the lines of "Whatever form I may take in he future, greet me happily then" (the other form being music itself) 😉 that's his "First Love".

It's not an allegory for his relationship with his mother; it is literally about his relationship with the piano and how music has been there for him. He is the most proficient piano player in the group.

For real this was such a great song!

The way he talks about music, personified in a piano of his youth... is just pure poesy. I can relate to his feelings a lot, speacially when it comes to depression and anxiety but in my case I'm an illustrator and painter... so I found salvation in another topic of art... Most people know Suga for his swag and "Im better than haters" songs, but his b-sides are so deep and touches a lot of mental health issues and his passion for music💜 is beautiful

Yoongi is the one in the group who really plays the piano...this song “First Love” is about his love for his piano/music which began since his childhood...the piano symbolizes the music which helped him during his years of struggles and which helped him reach the top..music is his life.

I was lucky enough to see this live when they came to Sydney in 2017. It ripped out my soul, laid it bare and then lifted me to incredible heights. I'm OT7 but Suga will ALWAYS speak to my soul.

Suga is also my bias, and I love this song. It's not about his mom though, it's about his love for music (though I'm sure he loves his mom too!) In his interview in WINGS CONCEPT BOOK, he said, “First Love’ refers to the piano I played when I was young and also the only friend I had. I cried a lot when recording the track. In the second half, where I explode the feelings, I kept tearing up.” The way it starts out just him and the piano, and the simple melody, and it grows and adds more to the music and becomes more complex as he gets older and discovers more music, goes through his difficult teenage years/early adulthood realizing that music will always be with him in some form, even if it's not that brown piano... and then in the end it's just him and the music and the metronome again. Really brilliant songwriting and composing. Edited to add: J-Hope's solo from Wings era is about his mom, though - "Mama". OH! ALSO - the guitar bit at the end/outro is music from one of his other solo songs (as Agust D) called So Far Away.

I love Suga's raw and honest lyrics. Music play an important role in his life. And great thing about music is that you can interpret songs in your own way. Piano can mean family members or someone who are important to you......

It’s about his relationship about his piano, but the listener can refer to anything that had the same enormous impact in their lives including their parents. Yoongis rapping skill is the ability to make you self reflect. He’s so amazing, all 3 rappers are amazing and they’re so different from each other.

I love this song because it starts like a conversation and the music gradually gets louder and more intense because you can feel his passion !!! ㅠㅠ

This song absolutely settled into my soul. I don’t even have words for how beautiful I think it is. Suga writes from his soul and describes falling in love with music and piano in such a way I’ve never seen. He was told to write a song about his first live and I think they expected a song about a girl because who wouldn’t… but who would expect this masterpiece? Yoongi is my forever bias even as I am OT7. There is at least one performance where they brought his childhood piano on stage and he was nearly in tears that performance. Also he did cry recording it and as the producer of this sing he used the sound of him crying subtly in the recorded version because he wastes nothing.

How anyone can listen to this and not weep is beyond understanding. When you get to know them better you will see that Yoongi is very sensitive. Hell, he wrote Outro: Tear, only someone with deep emotions could have done that. Sad as it is, I love this song so very much. Yoongi is really very down to earth, and yes, it is his story.

Suga is a great pianist I wish we got to see him play more. Yes this is Yoongi story. He always raps about his own personal struggles. He gets you in the feels. This song has nothing to do with his mom.

My favourite Suga song. I was in tears the first time I listened to this. His own music, whether it is gentle or raging hard, is always so deeply introspective. The piano her is both the literal piano of his childhood and a metaphor for music in general in his life. Edit: BTW, the melody in the outro samples another of his beautiful, heart-wrenching songs ‘So Far Away’.

True story. Yoongi is very deep. His personification of his piano is just brilliant. Yes, Yoongi plays piano....has his whole life. He is one of the main writers and producers. Jin is new to piano. You will come to find Yoongi is music. There is nothing else he wants to do. You should react to The Last. And their live performances are always superior! The live remixes are top tier. Their live band, Ghost Band has been with them for years. They are awesome.

I love Suga. He is my rap bias. He is raw when he raps. I love this song but i cant have it on playlist. I tear up i little every time i hear it i just cant have it happen in public.

Yoongi always puts such raw emotion into his music and it's one of the reasons he's so good. People can be technically amazing singers but if it doesn't have emotion to it then what's really the point y'know. Maybe that's just me but it definitely makes or breaks an artist for me.

This is one of the many reasons Yoongi is my bias.

Yoongi is also my bias. I connected with him almost immediately. All of his songs are so raw, heartfelt, and personal, and First Love is no different. It reaches into your heart and squeezes; tightly, and just to the edge of pain. He knows how to make you "feel"; and that can be uncomfortable - but so beautiful. Even when it's finished, my heart still aches. And yet, like all his songs - or his rap sections in BTS songs, he makes me smile. 💜

I saw a grown man go from ' I don't do boy bands' to wiping away a tear over this song 😭

Suga is such a sweetheart. His emotions are beautiful, deep, and dark like the ocean. He is so good at voicing how he feels, even when those feelings are horrifying to others. He tries his best to put everything into his music. It acts as a catharsis for him, but also for ARMY. He is my bias for this reason. As someone that deals with depression and suicidal thoughts on a daily basis, his music stands out to me like a light. Art, to me, is the same as music is to Suga. Sadly, my depression took away my love for art-and everything else. I'm hoping to rediscover my love again some day.

John "I did not expect that" Lol. Well , dear, I think that's the motto for all new BTS fan ! They never expected the deepness, sincerity, poetry and power of what BTS give us. Together or individually. Yoongi' s songs always touched me to the heart . He is so sincere, raw, deep and personal in his lyrics, talking about his struggles, fails and fears, but we can all related , in some way, to what he said. And his delivery is so passionate, brutal, his voice is like an arrow ! Suga is a musical genius and a sincere person, and I love him so much. If Jimin hadn't stolen my heart and soul since the first gaze, Yoongi would have been my bias, probably. This song, First Love, is one of my favorite Suga's/agust D solo, with The last, Shadow, and Strange (Feat RM). And yes, Suga plays piano, and guitar, he is a composer, producer (not only for BTS but for others artists) , and a song writer. First love is not really a metaphore , even if it can have double meanings, it's about his relation with his piano and the importance the music have in his live.

This song kills me every time. I studied piano for 10 years but abandoned music as a career due to the idea that it would not prove economically viable. I'm 68 and there was no BTS to tell me to follow my dreams. Not blaming anyone, but this song reminded me of my long ago dream and I wept for the young Louise as I am weeping as I write this. It's not completely self pity. I have a good life but there is a part of me that regrets. But there's hope as the best moment in life is yet to come. 😥🤔💜🥰

Everything thing they do has meaning. Suga is an old soul and a sensitive, beautiful man. He did shatter his shoulder when he was younger and finally had surgery in late 2020 after a few more injuries and continued pain. Thankfully he’s fully healed and back to doing what he loves most in life with his fellow members, creating beautiful art with his music. 🙏💜

One of only 2 BTS songs that make me cry. Yoongi's piano/music has been by his side through thick and thin. His shoulder did get crushed and he was worried he may not be able to play thus losing his place in BTS. I love the way he talks to it like an old friend. THIS IS ART.💜

oh, 100% to this. I am one of those life long -- Any genre BUT the rap, please -- people. I just couldn´t grasp how and mainly WHY would people listen to this kind of music....I am still kind of a baby ARMY with one biiiig BTS playlist on a loop. And guess what are the most replayed songs? Daechwita, UGH, and Shadow. Last year my playlists consisted of symphonic metal. Make of that what you will... BTS rapline, and for me personaly, SUGA has a magic touch when it comes to transfering emotions. I cried to this song when I heard it for the first time in the playlist, without the lyrics, not knowing anything about it at all. These guys are fucking special and anyone who shits on them is losing out, big time, because in 30 years, the ARMYs would be the ones who can tell, we were there with them along the way, when they were making history. I firmly believe that.

Every single time! The Live performance always gets to me. 💜 This song reminds me of the struggle just about every artist goes through. Is it worth it? What am I trading to keep at it? Do I dare trust the time and effort is what my life is supposed to be? And if I don’t? What then? I’m looking at this from the perspective of someone who grew up with musicians and painters in her life, watching their struggles of being different then societal norms of steady job, marriage, kids.

Yes, Suga plays Piano, Organ, Guitar and more. Also yes, it's about his true life. 💜

First Love is the first Suga song I ever heard and I fell in love with his music and him as a person and he remains my bias in BTS. His solo albums Agust D and D-2 are full of very raw and emotional songs on top of the in-your-face standing up for yourself ones. I recommend reacting to his music video for “Interlude: shadow” his solo song under BTS. It’s about what his hopes and dreams were and how he feels currently and deals with it now that he’s gotten to the top. The lyrics/rap are self-reflective and the music is hype. The music video itself is visually stunning.

This song is really special to me. It is the first song that got me into BTS (I was first listening to suga/agust d and then after about a year I started with BTS). As a musician this song resonated so much with me that I broke down crying the first time I’ve heard it. I “connect” a lot with Yoongi in his songs but with this one he literally took my words out if my mouth. You are absolutely free to interpret it as you wish because music and lyrics resonate with every single person differently but I just want to urge you to listen to the lyrics one more time with the perspective of a musician talking about their love for music (in his perspective his love for the piano) instead of the path you took with your interpretation. I love all their songs, I truly do but this one will always be special to me. He managed to put into words what I’ve been struggling to express as a teen for such a long time.

One of my absolute favorites!!!!! Yoongi is an absolute genius! This song, the way he performs it and just the raw emotion he always delivers no matter what.. he’s got such unique ad libs or bending of the words and just leaves his heart and soul out on that stage. He’s absolutely one of a kind… and as loved and appreciated as he is… he’s severely underrated and under appreciated. This type of emotional instrumental is something he’s played with often with his raps that I can’t remember ever tearing up from a rap before but chills from yoongi every single time man… and yes he plays piano guitar and learning some others I think lol total legend. This song has some things that are similar to this story… the piano is just music that is something that is his life… how crushed shoulder is true abs why he had the surgery… but the whole thing isn’t based on his life. His parents were never supportive of his music which is why they kinda kicked him out when he stopped going to school to make music, write music, produce…. But that part is relevant to the storyline so it’s like half about him and half not lol

I've watched that live performance countless times and it never not makes me cry! Lol. It's just so hard seeing Suga being emotional since he's usually not one to openly display that.

- Yoongi tends to be brutally raw and honest in his lyrics. If you listen to The Last and Intro: Nevermind.... Geeez! 🤯 Which is probably why it feels like he pulls it from his soul when he raps live. - Talking about mental health is kind of taboo in Korea (with devastating consequences) so this is yet another area where he and the others are leading the way. 💜

When BTS found me at a very low point in my life, Jimin🐥became my bias. At that time I hadn't really listened to rap at all and I'm not sure how it happened but then Suga🐱 caught my ear, eye and heart, such a gifted beautiful freakin human, his words just resonate with me and of course I'm OT7 because I love them all. Without RM, Jin, Jhope, V and Jk there would no BTS, they are all beautiful, amazingly talented guys.... 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 great channel you have..
