I guess you misunderstood what the 2 men were talking about. Actually what they talked about means a lot. Like they were stating the favt that these media (entertainment companies. Newspaper, tv, all of them) were downplaying BTS because bts went up there w/o any help from anyone. As said, bts' popularity seemed like a grassroot movement, they became popular not because of promotions or connections (since they have none) they become popular because of the FANS/ARMY. That's why BTS has always been super duper thankful for their fans because only ARMYs were there when they didnt have none other than bighit. These media outlets were not gaining anything from BTS so they dont bother to promote BTS, also the connection wasnt there. They were just there watching BTS rose to the top without their help. That's why. And the 2 men were acknowledging that.

Ahhh for real thank you for explaining that to me, chat was correcting me afterwards but I didn’t know what they were talking about still, now reading this and going back to rewatch I completely understand what they were saying. My original interpretation was they were mocking them or saying they were fake because of them coming up without these traditional ways.

@@JohnReavesLiveThose big entertainment companies own Korean radios, medias, entertainment related field's majority of stocks. Of course they don't want BTS to success. They want their own entertainment companies artists to be on top. Also reporters, pds, and all related people don't get any benefits from BTS/Bighit because they didn't go thru traditional channels therefore, no Korean payola ($) also can not use their power over BTS. BTS skipped all those and became who they are without those people's help or promotions. They really don't want to see other smaller groups follow BTS footsteps. They fear other artists no longer need them. A few years ago's Bighit promotion budget for BTS was $500 for the whole year. BTS/Bighit just don't do lobbyings. Samething happens to US radio. US radio stations don't play BTS songs even though there are a lot of demands. Their first excuse was nobody understands Korean so they are not playing. So BTS came out with 3 English songs but still don't play on the radio. It comes down to be all about payola ($) which the most of famous western artists pay unspokenly.

About BTS hardships, the amount of hate that BTS are receiving compared to other groups is ridiculous and a lot of reactors or new army are obsess about the question : "what has BTS done to deserve all those hates?" . They've always been very humble, down to earth and respectful towards others. From a business point of view, Koream culture is hierarchal and strict adherence to this hierarchy is mandatory for everyone. For a small unknown company with ragtag idols to dare to compete with the big guns is near blasphemy; so every effort is taken to ensure this system is not disrupted. That's just how things work. BTS and Big Hit was différent since the pre début. Bang Si-Hyuk , when he created Big Hit, openly stated he didn't like the system that the Idol industry had created and he wanted to do better. So he choose the boys for their talents and raw potential, not for their face (except Jin, none of them fit the very strict "k pop male beauty standards" , that's why anti attack them so badly for being "ugly (!) or "not a idol face", specially RM and J hope, but also Jimin who suffer from bodyshaming because he was cheeky and not thin enough, poor angel ! ) BH let the boys have control over music, express their opinions, allowed them to talk about issues that many in SK society wouldn't, like mental health, school pressure, disparity in societal classes and so on. This mindset, added to the lack of fund and connections, made them an anomaly in the Kpop Industry. The big 3 compagnies controlled the media through this "pay to play system". At first, they look down on BTS, then they tried to buy them (in order to make them desappea) but Bang PD said no. So they tried to block BTS from broadcasts and TV promotions. BTS being creative, went around the establishment and develop their own shows, their own media platform ( Weverse) and used youtube to subvert the industry. Which made people in the industry mad so they tried to sabotage them through made up scandals and accusations, with the active help of their own groups fandoms. BTS knew that as they went through every hardships along their journey, the ARMYs are going through the same and yet the ARMYs still believe in them and fight for them no matter what. Sadly, KARMY have faced so much hate, bullying and even physical attacks for simply being their fans. Their was a time when in certain places it wasn't safe to let it be known you were an ARMY. This might be one of the many reason BTS have chosen to speak out about ending bullying and violence against youth. BTS create the song 2!3! to give comfort to Army during this "dark years (2015-2017) BTS succeed against the system witch try to destroy them. As they began to get successful worldwide, … more hate come, with racism, xenophobia, and homophobia (even if they never talk about their sexual orientation, they are considered at least feminist and pro LGBT rights, with is sufficient from stupid people to hate someone, and being accused of “gay propaganda” in some countries ! ) . And a lot of prejudice (in part because they are considered as Kpop band, Ha Ha , so ironic ! ) .But maybe behind the xenophobia, there is still a question of money and power : If BTS was owned by a american label who make profit from them, it would have been a very different story. Despite all this , BTS succeed and have faced the backlash with dignity and class and continue to spread their message of love to the world. They responding to the hate with their hard work and talent... and also a few awesome diss tracks and cyphers. They created another way to be successfull, and the most unusual codependant relationship between a group, a compagny and a fandom that had ever exist : Bangtan, Big Hit and Army, like a family. The most incredible underdog success story of the whole musical industry ! (Sorry to be this LONG ! )

Love your comment !! It is excellently written and clearly explains it all in a way anyone will understand it. I give Hitman Bang(Bang Si-Hyuk a ton of credit for being a total pioneer in how music and stars were made on South Korea. In BTS's case, I'm so thankful they were signed with Htman Bang because they did not have the spirit, creativity, drive, artistry & beauty squashed outt of them by the brutally competitive KPop Idol system that seems to me had little regard for how it's practices affected all the trainees & emerhing stars. We can now see & feel this difference in the 7 members of BTS, in their lyrics & music, in the ongoing drive to perform and to make everythingthey do special. THEY still love what they're doing. A lot of that is because in their 10 years they became 7 brothers. That was possible because they did not have to compete against eachother to get to STAY in the group, or for money, attention, hits. Instead they became eachother's BIGGEST FANS and wingmen, hyping eachother up, so proud of each other, encouraging them on to all reach ever higher levels of ability & performance. This difference in their company's policies & vision kept BTS a family, not just 7 guys in a business who work together. You can not fake the real joy, happiness, enthusiasm, friendship, mutual support and love they all have and give. Anyone can grasp when they see these guys doing anytihng how REAL & open they are. I read that Hitman Babg had worked at 1 of the Big 3 companies before he left & started his own company, Big Hit, so he KNEW what he & his group would be up against trying to get successful outside of the well established & controlled KPop system that existed then.(and still does to some extent). For Hitman Bang to have forged ahead, knowing all he knew, is (to me) so impressive ! it speaks to how strongly he felt that system needed to change so that South Korea's amazing pool of talent could #1) stop being crushed by a suffocating system run by money and #2) to have his country's music be able to break out & reach wider audiences. Think how much vision, hope and belief he had to have that the good of mankind would win out, in the end, he must've had to do all he did. Ofcourse he also managed to somehow find then pick 7 of the finest specimens of human wonderfulness that exists on our planet to forge ahead on that path with, to nurture into who the group is today. ARMY FOR LIFE !!!!💜💜💜

I was 15 when I became an army, and I’m 22 now. I found them when I was depressed and alone. I was heavy on sh during that time, it’s something that I only speak about online, no one around me knows because I never talk about it. So when I say bts found me when I needed them most, I really mean it. They were still struggling at that time, not famous and not well known even in their country. But they always had good music, they helped me so much with “Whalien 52”, “Reflection”, “tomorrow”, “rain”, “Move”, and “voice” at the time. I repeated their songs at night, and it was the only comfort that guided me through time and led me here today

I know right !!?? One big thing I loved about their music right from first listen was the respect in it, no nearly naked shaking booties, boobs hanging out, or meaningless graphic lyrics. Too many musicians bow to the lesser elements of society and their companies pressures I'm sure, to take everything to some low common denominator and it is so tiring, boring, uninspired, means nothing. I need meaning in my music.

The Korean media hates BTS for 1 reason - money. When BTS was just starting out, Big Hit did not have money to grease the wheels, so to speak. Since the k-media refused to promote BTS, Big Hit had to have an alternative method for promoting them. They used free social media platforms to show the boys’ fun personalities and extraordinary talent. In the early days, BTS was gaining more traction outside of Korea. Now that Hybe does have A LOT OF MONEY, they choose to circumvent the media completely by developing their own platforms like Weverse. So, korean media try to keep BTS out of the news as much as possible.

About "war of hormones" and the stupid controversy..so..let me clear the misunderstanding k-popies hv and few Armys hv about this song which was blown out of proportion by h@ters & Antis to create drama that time, which worked cuz k-popies & media latched on it... *This is going to long a$$ comment* Let's be real, War of Hormones wasn't misogynistic. It was just an honest song about what guys in that age range go through. They were straight up saying that they struggle with their hormones when they see a pretty girl, *and guess what? That's just being honest.* 👁️👄👁️ The title itself gives a clear idea to how they see it. A war. An internal conflict. And it's true to what guys in their late teens and early 20s go through. Bangtan has always been about talking about their experiences and being a voice of people their age. The entire album, Dark & Wild, was really just about the turmoils of young adulthood. In the title of the album too, you can already tell what the sentiment was going to be. The first 3 albums spoke about school and issues of teens. And then from there, the darker days of coming to terms with adulthood. And then the HYYH series. Everything was thematic with stories they wanted to tell as they go through life. Antis and fans of other groups were just grasping at straws to find something to shit on and unfortunately the media picked up on it and then some ARMY took it as truth and they themselves started talking as if the song was offensive. It isn't. We need to stop spreading this story as if BTS were misogynistic boys who needed to learn a lesson. Yes, Namjoon has learned a lot from the experience and has gone out of his way to speak to experts in women's studies, but I'm sure that whole ordeal also caused him unnecessary pain. *Now, My personal take on this:* I don't see anything wrong with the lyrics of the song. All boys go through puberty and the things BTS sung in this are just reflective of their experience going through that phase in their lives. This is the reason I love them and their songs.. they didn't hide anything and covered all the feelings/thoughts of a person who is in his/her adolescent...one can see them growing up from then till today…I personally don't find the lyrics offensive and “most” Armys as well..as I agree they are expressing the struggles of dealing with hormonal changes in adolescence, and I'm sorry but sexual attraction is the number one pressing issue in most hormonal teens regardless of gender. There's a couple of issues I take with people who found this offensive. First, the double standard. You can't tell me young women were purely innocent in their thoughts and feelings as they watched these young men dance and sing, they just didn't make a song about it, at least not publicly. Secondly, the entire concept BigHit wanted from BTS is a representation of the youth culture and the issues youth deal with as seen and heard through the lyrics and music of BTS, and of course everyone has or will experience sexual attraction. Yes, they refer to see through clothing and high heels etc, but I've seen hundreds of posts referring to JK's abs, Jimin's body rolls and shoulder "accidents" Tae's tongue...you get the idea, and while many comments aren't necessarily teens it's not a problem. There can only be an issue if the lyrics were implying that I'm only attracted to girls who wear heels and sheer clothing, not sneakers and sweats. Anyone who has experienced adolescence knows however that if they're sexually attracted to someone the person could easily walk around in a potato sack and an adolescent would still be entranced. A lot of people were offended by that line, "Girls are equations and us men just do them". Personally, I took it as "do them" meant they were puzzles to be solved, not a sexual act. RM was honestly shocked that people were offended by the lyrics and that they could be considered misogynistic. It was definitely a learning experience for him. He apologized and has since run his lyrics through a few professionals in women's studies before releasing a new song. They don't really release songs like this any more. *But to that a korean Army said translation in English were a bit off, which lead to misunderstandings and explained it saying : “I was kinda surprised it's translation was "do" because that part "do them" CAN actually sound offensive to some people, because the meaning of that word 'do' is not clear. However I can clearly say that it's not meant that way, and Korean version lyrics tell that. Words are more specific, and not controversial in Korean version lyrics, because it doesn't say 'do. That part in Korean is 여자들은 방정식 우리 남자들은 해 which says we men are 해 is a word for mathematics, and it means the 'answer/the final number'. So it means they solve. the complex minds of the girls. 해 DOES have the meaning of 'do' too, but its not appropriate to translate this part of the lyrics that way, because if u say it means "do them, it doesn't fit the sentence there. Since there's no Objectives for that Verb 'do' and that's... kinda awkward. plus. the context and meaning of the whole sentence is talking abt mathematics and Equations so what u said is true. It doesn't mean sexual way”* it's freaking mistranslation, if you don't belive me ask any korean, not only k-army but any Korean.. it was done to sabotage BTS's career..💀 BTS hv made few mistakes unknowingly early in their career and said things which can be considered offensive, as they were young but they hv re-educated themselves, apologized and never repeated the mistakes again..but I hv seen many k-popies and so called Multi Armys twisting many things because of that..take for example this song.. it's blown out of the proportion just to cause drama..and they were sadly successful in that..haters/antis tried every lil thing to bring BTS down & sabotage their career ngl..

I completely agree about WoH, but also Boy in love - in particular the MV could be seen as offensive, and suggest it's OK to get physical with girls. However it is actually simply following a trope common in Kdramas about teen love, and I think it also reflects the difficulties boys (and, lets face it, many men) have in knowing how to interact with girls/women. I also think that there may be some songs they released ... I suppose "unofficially", particularly those more influenced by American rap, which do have some pretty offensive lyrics. Expensive Girl includes a line which, if you put into a google search, returns nothing but porn sites. I think his video was fairly quickly taken off YT, but CCL is still up there: it's very short and is in fact a sweet and sensual song, and, yeah, it's pretty sexual, but that phrase is ... unfortunate. In fact, at the end of the day, the fact that BTS (as a whole) and BH are willing to listen and learn is far more important than any mistakes they made ever.

Hi there, John. Thanks for looking at Hardships ... I really appreciate your reactions, but with this one I think you missed a little of the background and implications. Bear in mind that this shows instances of hate and abuse spanning many years, and includes things they heard before they were anything like established. JK was 14 when he started training - away fro home, friends and parents. Jin was 20. The hate started before they even debuted, and they saw it. As soon as they were "announced" it just got worse. It wasn't jealousy, it was the intense competition of that industry - and some sort of irrational fear. They also had massive levels of anxiety that they might not make it INTO the group, that the group might NEVER debut, that they might not get airtime (they didn't), might not make enough money, quickly enough (at a time when they were aged from 16 - 22 and were the main source of income for BigHit). The stress they were under was unbelievable, and they also had to deal with all that pressure plus so much hate - even long before they would have felt they were close to successful yet. When they started they themselves have said they really weren't that good, and some early film kinda reflects that - they were not significantly more talented than other young groups, everyone worked hard, and BTS STILL don;t know why they got so big compared to others (Yeah, WE know, but BTS still find it surprising, only able to credit ARMY - but why should ARMY come to them and not someone else?). The fact is that each element that Rosann shows in Hardships was yet another burden that BTS had to carry - and yet they did so with such emotional maturity at such an early age. JHope did a vlog pre-debut, on the day their fan-cafe page opened, and he went on to find ... there were no messages for him. His reaction? He looked down for a second, breathed out, "Never mind. It will be OK. Good!" - amazing. I read that RM used to have to translate English comments for the others, but he would translate hate comments into praise, and never let them know. Immense.

Wow the last song you watched just took me back in time 14-15 years ago when I was a HUGE DBSK/TVXQ fan (Cassieopiea here!) and in fact, Triangle was the first ever kpop album I ever bought 😭😭😭I followed DBSK throughout their career until the members left to form JYJ. BoA is one of the biggest and first female artists from SM entertainment. She became huge in Japan and in Korea both, a first for a female kpop singer and she was by herself which is more impressive. Triangle is like a huge collab between 3 artists and it was DBSK's most iconic song for obvious reasons (like the crazy hair XD) If you want more songs like that I would listen to TRAX (the rock band) and NELL (softer rock)

It was really interesting to listen to with you some new groups. I noticed they looked all quite young maybe younger than BTS, the generation next BTS. I should listen to more into those groups because "on the surface" i always have the feeling to hear the same "fast drums" in every songs of those different groups. Maybe it is a part of that genre ? First i thought those "fast drums" were the Straykids signature but it happened to be in most of the other songs of other groups younger than BTS. Is it a New trend ? If you watch for new groups i will be happy to watch and learn more about them with you, because i enjoyed some songs already. Thank You John and Meg 💜 Oh did u heard about Jared&Jordan ? And Knox Hill ? They are really interesting to listen to.

I suppose it makes sense. Yeah, I think you're right. There are usually "eras" of mainstream music if you look on the surface. Even if there are different genres, each genre tends to have a certain sound that is trendy for that period. If you hear music in the 80s, 90s, 10s and 20s you would be able to make a decent guess for where each song belonged for the most part. It's harder to pinpoint when you are currently in that decade but once it's gone it's easier to tell. Maybe the fast drums thing is the current K-Pop trend with the younger crowd. I have heard people criticize BTS for not sounding K-Pop enough and some feeling insulted that BTS and ARMYs don't really consider BTS to be K-Pop so I suppose that must mean that there is a sort of sound that makes the genre.

XCeleste did not go in depth about the military enlistment postponement. The reason all of the other agencies objected was bc ONLY BTS received a cultural merit award. It’s unheard of for young men to earn one before turning thirty, but BTS was the exception for that as well. They call it the BTS law now. Lol 😂 Jin will turn 30 in December and Suga in March. Not once has BTS mentioned wanting an exemption. Personally, I think this hiatus is paving the way for their enlistment.

  • @ZariDV

    @ZariDV

I've suspected the same thing. It's all just speculation on my part, but I felt like the way Jin and Suga said they're spending their time (at FESTA) made me think that the hiatus is indeed paving the way for enlistment. They were both acting in opposing extremes; Suga was doing a million different things that filled up every minute of his schedule as if he's trying hard to do everything he can while he can, meanwhile Jin was indulging in as much fun and relaxation as physically possible to the point of missing meals for days at a time as if he's trying to rest as much as he can while he can. I could be wrong but it did cross my mind hearing how they described their lives in extremes while the others seemed to be acting in moderation.

When you were talking about the mysogny they say he had in certain lyrics. Those songs were about their view as young men, school boys really, the veiw that women and their pull to want to be close to them. People took a few of those lyrics and blew them out of preportion, they were young men with little time with girls so their views basically were the views of young horomonal men and how they saw young women. Of course they will look like they are over sexualizing these women because that is all they know of women, at that stage in their life. That one really upset me at the time of it happening. Psy had to do military twice because he was accused of not completed his duties because he was performing on tv shows and concerts during the time he was suppose to do exclusive duties so he was redrafted and completed a second draft. Now Im not saying he did or didn't I am just giving the reason why the military said he needed to take his military service twice.

Who else has been able to break both Michael Jackson and the Beatles records?! Two of the most successful artists of all time. The Grammy's doesn't deserve to have BTS ever grace their stage again!!!! BTS was used to increase viewers. I will never watch the Grammy's again! For the MAMA 2016 it was just mainly the fault of MAMA because they said just when they started that they changed the way of calculating the score so yes EXO was supposed to win by the way they calculated the score back then but MAMA announced that the same day not sure if it actually happened before or later that the way of calculating the score changed. I don't blame EXO-Ls getting mad because EXO was announced for so many awards and didn't get any(maybe some I don't remember for sure but an EXO-L explained to me the situation why and how it happend). But from 2015 or 16 there already was going on a fanwar between these fandoms.. that is why BTS got I think 2 or 3 Black Oceans Mai ly caused by EXO-Ls but nowadays we are mainly friends some may hold a grudge but these years were crazy even TWICE got a Black Ocean ...ONCEs and ARMYs always stood by each other that is why there many ONCEs and ARMYs friends and/or many became a stan of the other group as well. It is mainly because SME holds the most power i kpop because if EXO wouldn't have had the hiatus( military service ) there wouldn't have been such a big diffrence between theirs and BTSs album sales. I am an ARMY and I am a fan of EXO but not really a stan so I don't describe myself as an EXO-L but still they are amazing idols that deserve the love( well Chen deserves much more love he got so much hate for having a girlfriend and marrying her and have 2 children *_* ) So yeah the kpop industry as the whole is crazy. Because you can't say that they were apart of it well now they are but back in the day they basically weren't supposed to go worldwide more like an SME,JYPE,YGE group(well BP did) so yeah. Anyways SME was the whole start of KPOP that is why they hold so much power. They had the first groups and everything. Even the CEO of JYPE has auditioned for them(JYP the CEO is much nicer than many others portray him,ppl are acting as if he controls the whole Entertainmen) and YGE just became big for mainly having rap heavy and unique tones(vocals). And SME nowadays is mainly known for VOCALS. and JYPE for great dances and amazing stage presence(YGE as well but more like the attitude).

The others were rather respectful just didn't agree with them wearing make up being a rap/underground style. The comment about them being girls was just that one mad clown. He doesn't deserve the attention he gets. I get it fans are mad but that one wasn't that crazily bad. As most moments that portray the problems with the k industry. The underground/rap industry isn't that great as well. Saying that a guy looks like girl shouldn't even be an insult. It just shows toxic masculinity nothing else, nothing new.

It seems like the one guy from the boy band recognized that K-Pop groups are so highly trained and skilled that if they were truly allowed to be judged fairly alongside Western boy bands, bands like his would get eaten alive. It sounded like a fear of competition...which is understandable because most US boy bands truly cannot compete and it's a valid fear of losing their spot in the industry. They have every reason to be scared when they're being mediocre in comparison. The lyrics aren't as great, song production isn't as great, the fashion isn't as great, the music videos aren't great at all, the dancing isn't great, most times it's just singers and no rappers so the songs aren't as dynamic, and despite all of the singers their vocal range isn't that great. They're speaking from a place of intimidation because it's easier than simply aiming to do better and put out a better product.

Even last year, Dynamite by BTS should have absolutely won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. For one, BTS was the ONLY group in that category (this year we saw the same happen, except for Coldplay), making them the only ones who actually qualified for the category. The other nominees, while deserving of praise and very talented, were collaborations, including the winners, Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande. They shouldn’t have won because being a collaboration does not equal to being a Duo (like, say, Savage Garden) or a Group (like BTS). Second, there was no comparison between Rain on Me and Dynamite if we are talking numbers. While Rain in Me is a catchy song, it was forgettable. It did well enough numbers wise, but it dropped off the charts quickly and you don’t se people talk about it anymore unless it is to discredit BTS. Again, forgettable. Dynamite is the most popular song of 2020, the most streamed, the most awarded, the most viewed mv, it literally has broken over a hundred records AND didn't leave the top 10 on Billboard for weeks. Now, say whatever you want about “the board doesn’t take sales into consideration” because that’s BS. If they only considered the “quality of the music”, then they might as well just say that the award is chosen depending on what their personal taste is, the impact of the song forgotten. “Dynamite” became the anthem of 2020, a spark of joy in the darkness of the COVID-19 pandemic. It skyrocketed BTS to a higher level of fame globally and left a lasting impact on the music industry by topping music charts and selling millions of units worldwide. Musically, both songs are disco/funk dance pop, they are catchy and simple. Lyrically, both songs are simple, with one talking about resilience in defiance of the hardships in life and the other intended to soothe listeners during the COVID-19 pandemic, the song talks about joy and appreciation for the little things that make life valuable. So, with both songs being so similar musically and in substance, how did the Recording Academy decide which one deserved the award? I don’t believe that they don’t look at the numbers and popularity when they select their winner, one only needs to see the number of nominations Olivia Rodrigo had this year to exemplify that. And this just goes to show the ongoing racism that permeates the Recording Academy. Third, if someone still thinks they have an argument against my reasoning up above, let me remind you that the category is not even BEST POP DUO/GROUP SONG, it’s PERFORMANCE. Rain on Me was performed ONCE, and one might argue that the performance was good but not memorable. Then we have BTS, who have performed Dynamite 33+ times and not once was a performance similar to the others. From performing it on stadiums, to performing it in a skate ring, to a legendary dance break, to literally recreating the Grammy’s set in Seoul and finishing the performance at a helipad in top of a skyscraper; Dynamite is the epitome of Performance. Nobody out performs BTS and that’s the truth. Now, I will be the first to admit that Dynamite is not BTS’ best song. While incredibly catchy and massively popular, it is one of their simplest works. BTS is renown and loved for many reasons, one of which is the meaning behind their songs. Their albums are heavily inspired and reference psychological theories, literature, mythology, poetry and art. Their album series ‘Map of the Soul’, for example, is based off the book called ‘Jung’s Map of the Soul’ by Carl Jung. They usually write songs that speak on mental health, society & social issues, speaking up for the youths and self-love. Speaking frankly, they deserved all the Nominations they applied for both during 2020 and 2021. Map of the Soul 7 was the best selling album of the world in 2020, with more than 7 million copies sold (and no bundles), its an album that details the struggles BTS goes through both as a group and as individuals and its been considered as both a musical and lyrical masterpiece by music producers and experts, TWO of its songs (My Time and Filter) charted for over a YEAR. Yet, they didn't get nominated. Similarly, BE was an amazing album and yet, crickets. This brings me to my final point: We all know why Dynamite and Butter were the songs chosen for the nomination and we know why the rest off their songs weren’t. Dynamite an Butter we’re the only songs submitted that we’re all in English. Simple as that. It comes as no surprise that their all English songs were the only ones to be picked up by radio stations outside of Asia and the only ones to be recognised by the RA. Because people have the backwards belief that English is somehow more palatable than Korean and that people wont listen to a song they don't understand (which is a big fat lie, people eat up songs in English when it's not their first language, and English-speakers gobble up Italian, Spanish and French constantly); it’s sad to see these beliefs be backed up. But we all know how Anglo-centric the world is. Which points us towards the reason BTS didn’t get the awards. Need me to spell it out? They are not western. They don’t sing in English. They are not white. The last one is especially jarring, because we can bring up numerous other examples of systematic racism within the academy. The Weeknd, anyone? Zayne? Freddy Mercury? The Recording Academy‘s record speaks by itself. Since the inception of the Grammys in 1957, eleven black artists have won the Album of the Year Award. John Batiste was the first black man to win it in over a decade. Not to mention other racial minorities within major categories. Others have argued that non-white artists mostly win in smaller "racialised" categories. Beyonce might hold the record for most Grammy awards, but most of those were within categories such as rap and R&B, which are considered "black categories" and are POC dominated, and not within a major category. As it is, most non-white artists have to be content with being nominated for minor awards (Latin music, Rap, R&B) but never nominated for major awards. And even then, these racially diverse categories are often chucked into the non-televised section of the awards.... like it happened during 2020. It is especially hurtful when the award BTS was nominated for usually is televised and a "main segment" but was chucked to the "pre-show"last year, but they were still used for ratings… as it happened again this year with BTS being pushed as the face of the Grammys. And it goes to show how the Grammys will become irrelevant if they don’t begin to acknowledge that the future is racially and linguistically diverse. We already saw it in the abysmal numbers the Grammy’s broadcast pulled. Not even reaching 10mill real time viewers last year, the GRAMMYs experienced their worst year ever. An, funnily enough, most of those viewers were ARMY (BTS fans) who were being held hostage because the academy decided to put BTS as a closing performance, a place that is often given to a winner of a major category. But BTS being used for views nothing new, either. The power BTS and their following hold became glaringly obvious during the non-televised segment: when BTS was not announced as the winner, the viewership dropped from 1.2M to 400K. The same happened to the main event, with the viewers dropping significantly after BTS’ performance (which was cut short and had no VR like the rest of the other performers). On the other hand, BTS’ live accumulated 10M+ real time viewers in their 18 minute after Grammy stream; which they did to bring comfort to their fans after the major disappointment we suffered. And not even a week before, Jungkook (a vocalist in the band) broke the internet with over 22M real time viewers when he did a live; in which he ate a salad and sang to us. That’s almost triple the alleged 8.8M viewers the Grammy pulled. So, in conclusion, we know why BTS didn’t win. But we also know why they should’ve won. This is a bigger issue than BTS. In the end, however, the Grammys need BTS more than BTS needs the Grammys. And that’s that.
