That’s like the worst thing. He was there by himself, shy like he is and they treated him like that. I remember the video when he was showing X with his arms asking the viewers not to vote for him. I’m heartbroken

RM is the type to really listen to criticism. He doesn't listen to nonsense noise but if he thinks the criticism can make him better, he'll work on it. The boys don't have a big ego because they simply are trying to become better.

Money talks. In the beginning Big Hit didn’t have any clout/money so BTS was not given any notice by the mainstream media. They had to circumvent them in order to get their music out. They used platforms like SoundCloud and KZread. BTS became more popular outside of Korea because of this. As they grew in popularity, they did not need the mainstream media. That caused the Korean media to avoid publishing any of their achievements. As Big Hit grew financially, they created their own platforms to promote their artists. So, the Korean media are still angry and won’t give them much notice.

Also that is why RM mentioned how they don’t need PROOF because ARMY are PROOF. He said this during one of his speeches on Day 1 or Day 2 at the Vegas concert and now look what we’ll have next… their comeback album releasing in June named PROOF. Someone in the cmmnts said it was only “toxic fans” who did this to BTS You are wrong, there was clear help from the companies of this group, and idols openly looked down on BTS while they practices in the washrooms as they were from a co without power. A certail grp i wont name made controversial speeches towards BTS, they attacked BTS through their rap, members of a grp and their siblings were even involved how do you say its not with their knowledge lol Btw a big company even tried to buy BTS from bangpd (a common tactic used by big co when smaller grps tend to over shadow their grps, they will buy the artist and give them nothing and not release music thereby ruining them)

War of Hormone is the song they called misogynistic and it is definitely not, at all. Other entertainment companies are known to pay people to spread hate about groups that they see as competition.

I love that song and so sad they don't perform it anymore. There is nothing wrong with that song at all.

The misogyny claim was related to mistranslated lyrics "Girls are like a maths equation we must solve" became "Girls are like a maths equation - we just do 'em" .. the song 'war of hormone' was a fun take on the way hormones make young boys go crazy. As a woman I can tell you it was in no way offensive ... it's a cute and funny song... and totally accurate! Also, With your background I highly recommend the documentary Rise of Bangtan to you - shows how the industry works and the guys journey from predebut to now. I think you would love it, and we'd be happy to watch it with you. unfortunately this video had to be made so other people understand why we are so protective of BTS and BTS so protective of ARMY.. as Celeste says - we grow and learn from hardships and have become more cognizant of ourselves because of them.. mind you this really was only the tip of the ice berg of hatred BTS and ARMY have received, and we know the hatred won't stop (Haters gonna hate) - but that's OK it makes us and our bond even stronger cause "we never walk alone" (LOL.. we have a saying Karma is an ARMY... an army that is now 60+M strong).... .... it is unbelievable just how dumb and stupid some people can be and how much time and effort they spend in hating on others online. No other group has ever had such intense negative scrutiny placed on everything they do - the people behind it mostly are the other agencies and the networks. They needed for BTS to fail as BTS proves that you don't need the 'system' to be successful. They were being attacked by pillars of the media world and shunned at every turn - just like what is happening with them in the west now. Fans wars were set up and agitated by the agencies. Also, PD Bang was offered millions for BTS - he could have sold them during that first year and they would have been shelved by whoever bought them. But PD Bang started BigHit because he wanted to prove you could support your artists and be successful. He knew what would happen if he sold them, and he knew the system was wrong. Yes I agree 100%.... And be always aware of the usurpers pretending to be ARMY , they often make hurtful comments and lies in order to depict the real ARMY as toxic. .. And you'll have some saying their favs also goes through hardships to demean what BTS faced.. Yes everyone worked hard but NO ONE faced what BTS faced at the same level (Petition under the blue house, multiples death threats, no waiting rooms, extreme racism, hashtag trended worldwide, multiple false accuzations...)

Honestly the word 해 can have double meanings. *하다-해-hae which they used, means 'to do.' Wouldn't call it a mistranslation but I can say it depends on the translator's conception. Experienced translators would use 'solve' though. I still don't see the problem with the song either way.

First of all he was a teenager at the time….a baby & those were grown men talking to him like that. Second he literally has the kindest & purest heart how could anyone be rude to him. Yes! They are without question more mature than any of their haters. When that host apologized in the later show & JK hugged him & forgave him I initially thought that guy doesn’t deserve his forgiveness or hug. But then I thought you know I’m happy for JK that he can forgive that guy. I’m happy that he has not let people like that guy change who he is. As popular as he as become & as much criticism & judgement he has received over the years the fact that he has been able to stay true to himself & still have his kind & pure heart says so much about him. I think the tight relationship the members have with each other helps them be able to stay true to themselves regardless of how others treat them because they can lean on each other. I’m happy they have each other & that they haven’t let the hate they’ve received change who they are. It truly is inspiring to me. I often use the word grace to describe BTS because I feel like it fits them so perfectly. I feel like grace is one of the most difficult qualities to have. Their ability to show compassion, kindness and love to someone even if they might not appreciate it, or return the favor or deserve it….it is truly inspiring to me & makes me want to try to be more like them in my life.

During this time period, there were three large music companies (dubbed the big 3) that were responsible for the majority of successful K-pop groups. The fact that BTS wasn’t from one of these larger companies and was still finding success threatened these larger companies. That’s one of the reasons why they saw so much hatred. People genuinely could not believe that BTS was finding success coming from such a small company. And the more successful they became, the more angry anti fans became. And today, big hit brings in ten times the revenue of those “big three” companies combined. It’s why we say that karma is an army.

The reason why bts had little news reports (even when they were nominated for a grammy) was because these big companies paid media, they had control about everything during that time, they still have but they can't touch bts anymore, at least not like they used to.

I think that’s why a lot of people have such a hard time believing the bond between army and bts, bts truly would not be where they are today without army and similarly army would not be where they are today without bts. Its not really the group who tries to sabotage other groups but its more of their own toxic fans who try to sabotage other groups to push their own fav group further

I love BTS. I think they work hard and they really make the effort to connect with their fans. I also believe that there are many artist out there who are also doing the same so I don’t think they’ve cornered the market on hardships. What I do respect is that they respond to the critics with their music and with their success. I don’t hear them bad mouthing other artists and I really respect them for the way they deal with it, even if they may be grinding their teeth about it away from us. A lot of trouble is stirred up by toxic people or toxic fans. I choose not to react. To me it’s like giving them attention. Just ignore. The awards, the records, the impact of their music and message, that’s where our focus should be. Enjoying your reactions here in the Caribbean 👋🏾

As a chinese person who was born in america, the german radio host situation really hurt me. It was at the height of asian hate here, even in san francisco and BTS being sworn out on a MAINSTREAM public funded I believe radio station by a person who has a reach that can influence the public.. it really enraged me. Imagine all those asian kids in school in germany who were already going through enough during covid and being blamed for a virus they didnt cause... and this radio host spewing this hate calling it a joke we couldnt take. I took the petition and sent it out to my company.. one of the largest in our field in california (tech) and got people to sign. the host wazs eventually taken off the main show.. but I honestly dont think he realizes his actual wrong doing and harm. I stan BTS not because they are asian and represent me , but because they represent being against prejudice as a whole and happen to face the same shit I face for being Asian or other.

So only as an "update" on the situation with the German radio host: The radio station got slammed pretty badly in the German public for their non-apology. The host never went back on air and left two months later. He now has a podcast - I believe.

The crazy thing about it is that by looking at them, you'd never know everything they've been through. They aren't constantly bitter towards the world but instead choose to put out positive energy. They've remained humble and genuine people and I am so proud of them 💜.

So kpoppies and two specific fandoms that have actual target groups with thousands of members and were also behind the 2016 comeback sabotage and a later incident as well in 2020 carried out their smear campaign and as core members of the fandoms it is believed they execute the orders of medium 3 companies they belong into they took advantage of the situation in Japan to try and destroy BTS's career. And believe me it was a hellish situation back then I often wonder how we were able to get through it. It was later that was revealed that this along with the many attacks they got back then brought BTS to the brink of disbanding the hate and attacks were unbearable. Now back to the situation. Those fans took advantage of the situation with Japan contacted Journalists who later revealed they were their sources and gave them a picture of Jimin from 4 years ago which they dug up to stir controversy about that t-shirt which had be worn by many idols and citizens as it was a common t-shirt. And then supported Nazis and extremists in Japan to even life threatening situations for both BTS and Japanese Army. Army's at that time even got physical and verbal attacks. And when they saw that they failed they fabricated a picture from Seo Taiji's concert that BTS was part of and presented it as a swastika symbol when it was actually a symbol of the school system in Korea and nothing to do with it. They again failed because Seo Taiji himself cleared the situation. Imagine Seo Taiji legend himself had to intervene to stop their psychotic behavior. I don't even want to remember that period since then I have fear whenever anything controversial comes about BTS because we are unable to stop these target groups of other psychotic fandoms.

I doubt it. They are all just being civil to each other. Hi bye a smile and a greeting does not make close friends. No one, famous or not, have THAT many close friends. And it's clear that companies have paid shills in media and fan spaces. There's that sojang channel that create nasty rumors cos they got paid. A lot of what BTS goes through is intentially and strategically targeted. Toxic fans..I can brush off toxic fans. But with BTS, its sheer undiluted hatred towards BTS. Those anti/haters are as organized as ARMYs and it is unrelenting. For 9 whole years straight! Haters do their most to defame BTS' character. This quick overview scratches the surface, if u can imagine the extent that BTS & ARMY went through with each and every hardship event. For example, the German DJ incident happened over the course of months whereby he accused a protective ARMY of being overzealous teenage girls. The blood boils. Particularly when these people persistently attack 7 of the nicest guys in the industry. And yes, these things are happening to them to this day.

PLEASE READ I think what the music critic Kim Youngdae was saying explains a lot of the hate BTS get. Watching that whole interview cleared a lot of things for me. I'll explain his words and other stuff here: Basically, there's three huge entertainment companies in South Korea: YG, JYP and SM. Those companies have had tons of artists over the decades and have basically had the monopoly over the industry. So every time they debut a new group, the power of the company allows for the group to become successful quickly. These companies have control over TV shows, variety shows, press, journalists, radio etc. So these entertainment companies and the media are basically in agreement that the companies will pay for exposure for their artists and the media will get money and clicks and views in return, right? So the companies can create their artists and force them in bad contracts and control them and make money off of them easily. Then comes along BTS. They're from BigHit, a tiny company that has one solo artist before them (different genre) (they've had a few artists before that weren't too successful and were over when BTS debuted). The whole philosophy of BigHit and its CEO Bang Shihyuk is to give the artists creative freedom with their music. The members of BTS are from all over the place and they are debuted in the kpop industry but with freedom that artists in these other kpop agencies don't have. Being from a small company, BTS doesn't have the money to be throwing at all these TV shows and other media. So they don't bother to report on BTS or share their content. And when BTS does get to appear, they're not given much respect. So BTS starts making their own content: vlogs and behind the scenes content on KZread, their own variety show and livestreams on Vlive, close communication with fans on Twitter and other platforms, etc. And they start gaining fans around the world on these platforms. And the creative freedom they have allows for them to make meaningful music that touches people. Their debut song was literally a criticical song on the way society crushes young people. People find energy from them and they're extremely hard working with amazing dance choreos. So their fans are on a next level of loyal and connected to the artist. So, imagine the other entertainment agencies' and media companies' surprise when these people start gaining success? They're selling more and more and don't seem to be stopping. This whole system they've built where every successful artist has them to thank for is useless. BTS doesn't need the TV shows, the articles, the mediaplay. No one is able to profit from their success. None of them can say I built this group. All they can do is try to downplay any achievements BTS gets and push their own artists to try to be as successful. When BTS got their fisrst Grammy nomination, the headlines weren't "Wow BTS is the first Korean idol to be nominated a Grammy, they're on the Best Duo/Group category!" It's "BTS fails to make it to the main categories." History is being made and Koreans don't even know right away. These companies can just downplay BTS and try to copy them. Jokes on them, you can't copy the sincerity of BTS. They're built by the members, the company, and the enormous support of ARMY. Basically the same thing happens when they start getting big in the US. They don't have a US record label so they don't get the promo other artists do. Radio hosts won't play them even when there's demand so ARMYs call them and request them and send them cupcakes and do everything to get them on. Stores don't sell BTS albums so ARMYs call all these people to get BTS' albums on the shelves of US stores. ARMY isn't just fans anymore, it's a movement of people doing everything in their power to get BTS the respect and recognition they deserve. And this is happening all around the world. And still there's all these people saying racist things and belittling them, whether it be because of their race, their language, the predominantly female fanbase, "shallow lyrics" that they've never given a chance, "girly looks", "gay sexuality" that they've never spoken on. The list goes on and on. The industry is scared of someone that can make it big without the help of the industry, because that makes them insignificant. And the general public gets their information from the media, so it's hard to get to people and get them to actually listen to the music without prejudice. Even now, when they have literally been IFPI's number one best selling artist in the world for two years, they're not treated the same as their Western counterparts. They are a "phenomenon" with "insane" fans who "mass buy" their music and are "bots". Literally Billboard is changing their rules to keep BTS from topping. They removed the Top Social Artist chart, BTS has been leading it for hundreds of weeks. The Hot100 charts have recently been modified to not count literal sales of the music as much, with radio getting more importance. Guess which part BTS are more successful in? Yeah. Radio still won't play them. The same thing has been happening in Korea, where some award shows have changed their criteria to be based on judges who award quality instead of the fans' input. But guess what? BTS is still winning them. This turned out to be a long rant lol. But yeah the hate and resistance BTS gets is not just from mindless antis, even though it's them too. It's a lot of industry resistance, because BTS are the first to ever do so many of these things. So they have to do all the hard work and remain respectful even when they are ridiculed, to always be the bigger person. People literally try to make up scandals about them but there is nothing to talk about lol. They are paving the way for so many other artists that will not even see the things that have changed because if BTS. All of this is what ARMYs are trying to fight and also what helps BTS and ARMY be so close. Edit: Another comment made me want to add this 😅 What's incredibly impressive is how BTS has gone through all this and still continues to face this, but you would never know just by looking at them. They're the sweetest people, everyone in the industry and otherwise that meets them says the same thing - they're the same in real life as they are online. All this resistance from everyone else has made them that much closer to each other and just their craft and ARMYs. They really are amazing.

BTS dont care if they tackle difficult subjects that are unpopular. Spring day for example. However they don't want to intentionally offend anyone, especially not women due to thoughtless lyrics. RM did not use misogynistic lyrics, however he cares about his fans, so he chose to be a lot more careful in case he ever accidentally did somehow cause hurt to armys. RM is a true inspiration and leader and his maturity and thoughtfulness shows in how hard he works 💜

I agree. RM even shared how in their Billboard Award performance that they changed the Korean work for "you" to "I" because the pronunciation of "you" in Korean sounds too much like the "N" word in English which would cause misunderstanding! BTS try very hard to be "aware".

Yes, it’s that competitive. The K-Pop world depends a great deal on TV appearances and fan-voted awards on those shows to build the popularity of their groups. There are the “Big 3” companies that have lots of influence on getting their groups on shows. The companies (covertly) and organized fans really do try to suppress their competition by disreputable means.

to the point where those big 3 companies are willing to buy out groups from smaller companies and then run them to the ground and shut them down just because they're getting remotely popular and starting to threaten the big company groups' positions. it happened to a group called infinite and it almost happened to bts, however bighit ultimately refused to sell them out.

It's difficult to really convey just how bad all this was, though Celeste does a good job overall. The amount of hate, defamation, libel, threats, harassment, & mistreatment of Tannies is indescribable during these years. The hate got to such a fever pitch that BigHit (now called Hybe) released that statement about pursuing legal action against perpetrators of these crimes against BTS (the laws regarding online harassment are much stricter in Korea & you can press charges much easier for it than here). Ever since, Hybe has been routinely pressing charges (in the hundreds now) against BTS harassers, & in 2016 Hybe won the court case against them involving the blackmailing of an employee & investigation into their promotion tactics & the accusations of sajaegi, all of which were ruled in favor of Hybe proving their innocence. THAT'S how bad it got for BTS & Hybe - to the point of needing to take legal action, & having to prove their innocence in court. The attacks were a constant barrage. I lived these times alongside BTS & honestly, myself along with the majority of veteran ARMY were traumatized repeatedly by all the crap we & BTS were subjected to. It's one of a myriad of reasons why we're so protective of them & get defensive if we sense disrespect & hate towards them.

Im 2016 army and i cry a lot during those time, the hate, the mistreatment. Among army we always said this that time : "we are not a big fandom, we have to pull together and help bts" i remember we do all the scan code, flyers, sending flowers to every local station. Army back then did everything in our power to help bts. It's hard, while defending bts we promote them and so BTS too, they work hard along army. Im so happy right now that bts and army had passed that stage.

oh you're completely right about the "misogynistic" song actually... it's called war of hormone and the lyrics are a bit cringy but theres nothing misogynistic about them, they are quite literally praising women throughout the song

The MV as well is very telling in that it is the girls choice in the end as to who she 'picks' and it is the one who treated her the 'best'. The others as well as soon as she seems to say no or walk away, they don't follow, they go back to talking to their friends or the camera. It's pretty respectful overall. Plus being an amazing bop and hello to Jimin in the red pants.

RM felt so much stress, anxiety and guilt when that WOH controversy happened. On the positive side, I do believe he learned from that incident to be extra cautious about everything he says (unfortunately it's necessary due to how much people scrutinize everything BTS members do) and started to read even more sociopolitical books, which has enriched his knowledge and understanding of various subjects. It was really sad to see though, how much it affected his self esteem. Plus, WOH was a song BTS used to have a lot of fun performing. Namjoon always gets a lot of hate from media, the general audience and even fans, because people tend to make the leader responsible for any mistake. For some reason, I've always seen that people tend to project a lot onto him. Also, whenever there's a controversy in relation to any Kpop idol of another group, toxic fans tend to use Joon as an scapegoat, in order to deflect the conversation from their singer, instead of addressing the situation or making their idol accountable. It's very immature, manipulative and cowardly. They would maliciously criticize anything RM says or does, bringing back his old mistakes (and many times even lying, twisting his words, taking things out of context or spreading misinformation.) This is particularly infuriating because, out of all the young artists I know, Namjoon is certainly one of the best examples of what it means to become a more emotionally mature and intelligent person as you grow up. He constantly makes an effort to become a better person, he never makes excuses, he apologizes directly, he learns from the past, he shows when he has changed through actions/behavior (not only words), he's self aware of his shortcomings and defects, he uses his virtues and skills in practical ways. He shows respect, humility, gratefulness, admiration and empathy for others. And he does all this without lacking strength of character, critical thinking, or dignity. And he's more assertive nowadays too (when defending himself). But seriously, what else do they want from him? To save the Earth? To be perfect? No one is perfect. Side Note: I've noticed that in recent years, Jungkook has been getting an extreme amount of scrutinity too. Idk if it's because he's the youngest and has this "golden boy, good at everything" reputation... It's similar to how the public expect Disney stars or child actors to remain an unattainable ideal image forever. But the way people blow out of proportion every small incident he's involved in, it's unbelievable. For example, he was in a minor car accident (no one got injured), and the news had click-bait titles saying someone had died... You can't tell me that's not malicious. And that can take a tool on anyone. But, lately he seems to be doing pretty well ignoring hate... I'm glad. And now that they were able to do concerts again, he was so happy hehe. Side Note 2: To be honest, for me, some of the worst incidents were when they're disrespected by hosts. I still remember that time they went to a specific Korean variety show for the first time, Yoongi was really excited because he was a fan of the show, and he brought a song as a gift. And one of the hosts literally rejected his gift, even tried to refuse to listen to the track. Supposedly those guys were just "joking" but no sir, that is plainly cruel. By the way, that hamburger incident happened the very first time Jungkook was on a TV show, and those guys knew that, they knew he was still a teenager, and Kookie told them he bought them with his own money (it was his idea, to break the ice and show gratitude like "I brought you some food, please take care of me").

I've seen that it's really hard for men to get hate or being accused of wronging women when they're not trying to at all. It's a different matter, but I've seen people's lives being crumbled because of a fake accusation from a lady because usually no one ever believes the guy. The girl carries on with her life while the guy has to deal with the shame his whole life. And I say this as a woman.

Glad you talk about Yoongi got rejected on Weekly Idol. Not many army talk about this because its been a long time. I remember this scene clearly because at that time I was an avid fan of the show, but I wasn't an army and didn't know much about bts. Just decided to check bts episode since its their first time appearance and rookies were always funny. So i remembered watching bts episode and felt uncomfortable when Hyungdon rejected Suga's song. Suga's face clearly fell and he looked a bit disappointed. I remembered thinking, "hey, thats a bit mean..." eventhough I don't know about bts at the time. Defconn also rejected the song but he was polite about it. Hyungdon was belittling him. Now look at him. The most sought after producer in south korea. I bet Hyungdon regretted this for life and served him right.

I remember another fandom of a group, from one of the most influential entertainment company at that time BIG 3, petitioning the blue house (South Korea presidential home) to investigate BTS and their company, because they couldn’t believe a group from a small company is selling more than their favourite. It was so juvenile, sinister and frankly an unbelievable move that I can’t comprehend even to this day.

3:32 According to Kim Young Dae, a well known music critic in South Korea, these industry people hated the fact that BTS succeeded organically on their own, without their help. So they're doing everything to drag them down. Plus the fact that a lot of big entertainment companies invested and have connections in the media so they can pretty much destroy bts with their media play. These companies think that BTS is blocking their artists' success. So everyone's ganging up on them. I really hope you can watch The Rise of Bangtan

8:05 I'm not sure if you've seen it already but the army-made docu series The Rise of Bangtan can give you a view on how it goes with the kpop industry, and would definitely clarify things you're curious about since it's an excellent in depth analogy of BTS history which entails every detail that goes with it especially the industry they came from. I do hope you can check it out if you haven't already. 18:28 I think the problem lies on the idol groups' company rather than the idols themselves. Most of them are friends but the company can do everything in its power to sabotage groups that they feel is a threat to their artists. They do media play, and can control music shows, tv stations and social media sites to sabotage other groups, esp the companies belonging to the Big 3 of the kpop industry. They have all the means and clout.

It's hard to explain what the kpop culture was like in the early 2010 era. It has come to change so much. Yes, fans were more aggressive and toxic wars would happen over social media. I suggest watching The Rise Of Bangtan videos. They do a great job of following the journey of BTS while also showing and explaining the kpop culture. It shows how the world of kpop works and what made BTS so different. I enjoyed the reaction! Can't wait for more!

This video is never an easy watch without being reminded of the times that were literally BAD BAD … i just started as a fan from 2016 and just wat bts and we as a fan have been through since … the level of hate was unrealistic. I don't think the hatred has ended, but increased. Jealousy from the big companies,. Then there is The Grammy's (still upset at that) who blatantly use BTS in their commercials to get viewers for ratings. The Grammy commercials(and they were constantly on every show for at least one full week in LA ) had 3 inserts of BTS per every commercial , whether it was 30 seconds or 60 second. 3 times that is at least 6 to 7 seconds which is a lot. they played the clips to get viewers to watch the program live. I counted, they did not use any other artists more than once other than BTS in every single commercial. Then they snubbed them.Disgusting

4:45 oh! great point bringing up the beatles. I remember doing some research and looking up how the beatles were received when they first popped up and there were quite a few scathing articles about the beatles when they first came out, saying they were nothing special and only women liked them for their looks. And yet, look at how a lot of people worship them now, men or women or etc. i feel that this is similar to the treatment towards bts. they were looked down on so much for their looks and for having so many "crazy" female fans a few years ago and so many other things. but when I just went to the bts concert in vegas recently, tae asked all the ladies to cheer and then afterwards asked all the gentlemen to cheer. a few years ago, you may not have heard many men, but woooowwwww so many men were cheering at the las vegas concert and i'm so happy to see the change. bts' music is meant to be enjoyed by all and it brings me great joy to see more open minded people finally coming to join in listening to bts' message and music.

I an older American and I was introduced to K-Pop and BTS when they appeared on SNL, April 2019. I was completely blown away by their talents, skills, artistry and performances. I immediately started researching one thing which lead to researching another, and in the following order: BTS the group The individual members of BTS BTS's Discography BTS's History Big Hit Entertainment/HYBE The K-Pop Industry Other K-Pop Groups South Korean Culture South Korean History South Korean Current Events All of it has been so fascinating to learn. I have so much respect for BTS and HYBE and proudly call myself an Army.

That customer call to Melon was done by another group's fan challenging the results of BTS's win. The customer service told them BTS won the end of the story, with no fraud going on. Things like this are common such as petitions sent to Korean government asking them to disband BTS. BigHit has also had to go to court to prove their album sales amongst ridiculous claims.

I really don't get how jhope is untalented. He literally has every single role in the group. A dancer, rapper, vocalist, writer, composer, producer, and choreographer. Everyone is talented and might be more than him in some roles but the fact he has a skill for every single one says a lot.

I do not get it either. Being a dance leader is enough for him to be acknowledged as talented since he holds a special position in the group. Now even considering the fact that he is also part of the rap line trio. What more if we include him being actually one of the group's predominant producers, composers, and writers.

There were 3 big companies that had groups. They had control over all broadcasts, etc. BTS was from a small company, and a competitor. As BTS started getting popular, these things happened - big companies trying to belittle the small company. Also, BTS became popular outside of broadcasts - they online streaming, etc. So broadcast companies were also not happy.

Also, BTS was allowed to go on social media and speak directly to their fans. That just was not done among kpop idols. Another thing is BTS was able to keep releasing music while groups under the other companies only released albums once in a while, if hardly at all. I mean, look at Blackpink. Despite their popularity they have very little original music to their name. It's crazy but those top companies want to control everything about their artists.

That "reporter" that asked the plagiarism question has made other accusatory articles that trended on naver, and he was found to be on YG's payroll 🙄 Companies (most likely SM or yg since they have the most money and power in broadcasting and korean media) absolutely do run hate campaigns towards bts, yg is especially known to participate in media play since early 2000s to make their acts seem bigger/more popular than they are

The song that was referred to as having "mysogynistic lyrics" was War Of Hormones. I find the song cute and funny...there are even songs with worst and explicit lyrics than that but nobody even cares or noticed but with BTS they make it a big issue. They don't sing that song anymore but the MV, their live performances and dance practices videos are still available here in yt.

This video is a very PG version of what actually goes down when it comes to BTS. It hurts even more when you actually get to know the members a bit more. They are such genuine good people. The Jk's burger incident breaks my heart because even now he has like the purest heart with no hint of malice at all. With 6 older bros around him, he tends to see just good in people. But he was a kid at that time. Imagine 3 -4 adults treating you like that. Army suffers even more. All we want some basic human respect. Like you guys could react to a BTS song and even say you hate it. as long as you're respectful, we wouldn't get offended at all.

Not sure if y'all caught this since you were talking over it (I'm not complaining btw) -- the 🇰🇷 government made the military postponement only available to artists who have been awarded the Order of Cultural Merit from the government. Which is extremely rare, but BTS has received it. That's why the other companies complained that the law was "unrealistic" and "unfair".

I would be upset too. That law has to be fair for all. I am an ARMY and multistan, and obviously I'm going to miss them when they go to military service, but in their country it's a duty for all men. Just because they're idols doesn't mean they shouldn't do their duty like everyone else.

But as far as I know, the law to defer military service to artists who received presidential recognition was created for them a short time ago. I read that many companies that have more or less recognized groups have a duty to comply with the service. That is why I say that this law does not apply to all citizens and it is a bit unfair. Many other idols that I love will be doing their military service this year and they can't do anything to "postpone" it. For example, Taemin is having a hard time due to her mental health and they were evaluating if he should continue the service. He, who has a long history and is loved by the nation, didn't get that recognition and I also didn't see people asking for SHINee to do military service together or their time being postponed.

Thank you so much for watching this. They have had disrespect and hate from within and outside of the industry. US Radio blocks them at every turn with only a handful of stations willing to play their music since that is what the listeners request. If a western artist who is unknown gets a lot of requests they play it because the grass roots support tells them people want to listen to the music. When people request BTS music they are dismissed and relegated to the category of rabid teenage spammers. It is so frustrating. This 50yo ARMY is neither a teenager nor rabid. I like a wide variety of music. I LOVE BTS’s music and respect them more than any other artists I have ever had the pleasure of listening to and watching. Like RM says, Haters gonna hate. It is still sad. Even when they sell our SOFI and Allegiant stadiums they are described as “kpop boy band” or a phenomenon….instead of global icons and artists. Oh well. Peace!

armys may sound crazy when we say there’s sociopolitical context to bts’ but as you can see it’s true 😭 i love that bts know when to speak up and when to move in silence. like when korean broadcasting slighted them, they stopped attending/preforming at their programs. it’s gotta sting considering a bts appearance bolsters views immensely, especially as they get more and more popular every year. they may take a lot on the chin but they are in no way pushovers 💜

I'll never forgive them for making BTS stop performing War of Hormones over dumb allegations, like there's no problem at all with it's lyrics

i remember this german host guy. he recieved a huge backlash and armys all over the world were bringing the issue about the racism towards asians, not only bts for a few weeks after that because of the increased aggressions due to the pandemic. he and his company tried to apologise a few times stating that he "wasn't intending to be offensive" (yeah calling them "little pissers" and "blasphemy" on air is not offensive at all) and "attempted to express his feeling in an exaggerated manner that hurt the feeling of bts' fans". they claimed it was just a joke and never realized that jokes can be racist too and can have drastic consequences, they also never realised that it wasn't exactly about hurting armys feelings. we never made it about our feelings. we were fighting the blatant anti-asian internalised racism. with every attempt to save his image the guy was burring himself even further, saying he can't be called racist because he uses a korean car (it was japanese but it doesn't even matter, how a car can be compared to the respect towards a nation), saying he just underestimated armys power along the way calling us "fanatical followers of a musical cash machine" that "distorted his statements" by the "currently very popular racist stick". it was a mess. a mess that perfectly shows you what kind of environment bts and army have to deal with regularly

@@erume5776 sorry let me elaborate - I don’t mean suffering literally in the sense that it causes him great distress but that he continues to, like you said, feel shame or suffer the consequences of his actions. I agree that perhaps one day he can see what he did wrong but I’ve realized that people generally don’t really change especially when ego and pride are involved …which clearly he has. It’s disappointing really.

Celeste didn’t have to name names in the video bc we all know who it is. The more you react to BTS, you’ll figure it out too. The fans from one group just couldn’t let it go that BTS was doing better. And now, it’s the fans of many groups. But it all comes down to one thing…the numbers. Numbers don’t lie. BTS outsells everyone right now. Each year, army gets bigger and stronger. The reason is that BTS makes music that we can relate to, enjoy, and use to heal ourselves. No one else is doing it like BTS.

I love watch you two discover BTS, I will subscribe. I was so clueless in 2020, I even lived in Korea and iddnt care for their music cuz I didnt bother to understand their lyrics. Nov 2020 they saved my life. I have major depressive disorder and PTSD due to my bfs suicide years ago. I never go thelp. I was waiting on a hotline to pick up.. but no one was picking up and I was ready to end it. Im a real person. Im 30. I live in san francisco. I work in a large company and am successful, but I never got help. And out of the corner of my eye I saw their vidoe STAY GOLD. I didnt understand what they were saying because it was in japanese, but I understood the message, the emotion, the words stay gold. I broke down, and went down the rabbit hole of their journey and videos. I learned that I was worth feeling alive, that I was worth living. I started going to therapy because of BTS, and two promotions later here I am.

no other kpop groups have struggled as much as BTS .they deserve every bit of their success.smth I wanna tell you is kpop isn't a sweet family like it seem to be. A lot of artists have shown bitterness towards BTS's success.its not just their toxic fans..

18:13 So speaking as someone who has followed kpop since the 90s, there's a loooottttt of craziness tbh. And it would take too long for me to explain and go through everything in great detail. Kpop has been overly saturated with sooooooo many groups since the 1st gen (generation) or 2nd gen of kpop. In fact, during the 2nd gen of kpop, I remember the fandom wars were so violent. And anti fans actually would try to harm kpop idols like hitting them or slipping them poisoned drinks. It was horrific. And I'm sure some of that still happens now. Stalkers are definitely still a thing. Most of the craziness comes from the fans and fandom wars, but rival companies will also hire people to look like fans or journalists to sabotage rival groups. I've seen all these things hahaha. Now, I know it's not as big with the western artists, but with kpop idol groups, i compare their fans like they're football fans. You know how football fans get soooooo passionate in loving their teams that they will hate other teams and their fans to such a crazy degree? Pretty much the same things here with kpop stans lol except i have yet to see kpop stans flipping cars or causing riots because their group won or lost something lol. I think that a pretty good short video about how kpop came to be and how overly saturated it is would be DKDKTV's youtube video called "Kpop History in 20 minutes". It doesn't say EVERYTHING (like the crazy drama stuff), but it's a good general knowledge piece on kpop.

Im gonna mark this and leave it for comments and time stamps if I need too: 1) 16:30 Ok so about anti fans, I think in comparison to the western fans and kpop fans it is very different. But people get like REALLY engaged within kpop fandoms and take their time/energy hating on other kpop groups, so I wouldn't say its like the bots in the US. Majority of them are real people and since you have so many coming from different parts of the world, its very easy to trend things that can be hateful. 2) 18:08 I've mentioned most in my other comment but (most) groups don't publicly hate one another. Companies or staff members tend to get in conflicts with one another (conflict meaning backhanded compliments or simple dissing online) and the artists can be dragged into it. Also, since the clip in question was around 2016, BTS wasn't huge but it was their uprising you could say and (back to the companies) many of them posed BTS as a threat to their top groups. Since these companies in question were relatively bigger than BigHit (BTS's company) they had more authority, ultimately making it hard for BTS to just work how they wanted. 3) 33:46 Most korean men (idols) go to the military when they reach age 30. The member you probably saw about the reference to the military was Jin, who is 30. However, due to the amount of money BTS bring into the economy it has been deemed that they're already serving their country just by bringing in millions. Many people have different opinions on it (however i am not male nor korean so i'll leave it at that) but like stated in the video, they have always stated they would go if need be. 4) 42:49 Most people never realize the depths of hate bts get on a daily and its not just like stupid trolls. Like 2016, I was absolutely distraught and hurt from a personal stand point when I saw all those comments about V's grandmother. And truthfully it goes for all kpop artists, these people barely get to even see their families and just to shit on it all when one relative passes away, must be heart wrenching.

I remembered watching a video compilation that touches me the most. It was an ARMY writing a letter to a BTS member (I think that was Jin) way back 2013 when they first started saying how sorry s/he was because ARMYs aren't strong enough to protect them. And looking now, ARMYs have grown bigger and stronger and became the most feared fandom of all. I am so proud of BTS & ARMY. I wasn't there when they first started but I am glad to have found them now. Being feared isn't about people kissing our asses & give us false praises but it is all about getting the respect and shutting the mouths of those worthless haters. 💜

oh the kpop idol industry is very competitive. companies can and do stoop to that level. i think you guys would really enjoying watching the rise of bangtan - it is a fanmade doc but it is so good and so well made

Through all this you think they would have gotten big headed to show just what they achieved. But they didn’t. They have remained humble throughout their bumpy journey and that’s what drew me to them. They are great humans, talented young men and the energy that has brought smiles to people around the world is truly priceless and infectious. It’s less other idols or artists trying to sabotage bts but more other big companies, paid media, and certain groups of fans of other groups who hate bts because they see them as “competition”. Kind of like “well, if there was no bts then xxx wouldn’t be getting blocked”😬 it’s because of this that a good chunck of their achievements will be either downplayed or completely ignored (for example, getting nominated at the Grammys = bts fails to win a Grammy)

I forgot who said this but I think it was Eric Nam. There are hundreds of K-pop groups that debut every year but only 1% are able to pull through. I don't remember the exact wording but K-pop is highly competitive. I don't know much about sabotage within groups but unless you were part of the Big 3 companies (YG, JYP, SM), groups from smaller companies barely got much attention. Though now, I think things have gotten a bit better. Personally, I've come to know of various underrated groups from different companies. I guess this is why having such a strong fandom is crucial to a group's success because without the fans working hard to promote and support the groups, they wouldn't be able to last very long. I became an ARMY in 2020 and there's still so much I don't know about the K-pop industry but from what I've gathered, especially from BTS, the fandoms are truly a crucial part of K-pop. Despite the toxicity in some fandoms, the majority of the fandom does right by the group and tries their best to support.

It's not so much that the groups themselves are trying to sabotage BTS, but it's more the group's companies. Before BTS, the most popular kpop groups came out of the most popular entertainment companies: SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and YG Entertainment. These three companies have power in everything: tv channels, music charts, media news outlets, and award shows. This was already touched on in the video but when a superstar group like BTS comes out of a struggling, barely surviving company like Bighit, and BTS are proof that you don't need the three companies to be successful, and you don't need to cheat to win... those three companies are bound to feel threatened. So, the only way to deal with the competition is to eliminate the competition. One example is when BTS started getting popular and their career started to take off. One of the big three companies (I think it was YG) actually tried to BUY BTS from Bighit. Of course Bighit refused, and the companies got angry. You see, the company didn't want to buy BTS to make money off of them, they wanted BTS for themselves to ensure that they would have a downfall. They would take in BTS, not give them any funding or money, not promote their music, and basically make sure that they end up forgotten. Then the competition (BTS) is eliminated, the companies don't have to spend money on them, and then the big three companies continue their reign over the kpop music industry. So yes, there's a lot of sabotage, but bts rise up and out of it time and time again.

This is why ARMY does everything in their power to make and keep them untouchable and protected at all costs 💜

On your question: Yes the korean market is fludded with these groups trying to make it. Around a 100 groups debut each year and only 1% gets to stick around for a couple of years. Fans of groups ban together to throw out the competition. Certain companies gave/give a helping hand in these things. Like with BTS they were competing with a group in early days so these fans want head to head against each other. But the members of both groups were and are friends. (There isn't competion anymore as they are both established now)

As a mom of a boy, I don't think War of Hormone is bad at all. The name already tells you it's about what boys go through at that age. Comparing to American songs, the lyrics are not bad at all. Also, it is all because of mistranslation.

I explain it to my family abt there hardships as they were a band that wasnt suppose to be, because they werent from the big 3. The fix you cover they did was amazing and cold play loved it. But that German radio guy got fired bc army wasnt having it and forced the radio owners hand. This is why army is over protective over them and go hard at stations and radio and other people. I love that you guys go in and do your own research abt things or the songs. Def good ones if you havent had on a list yet is spring day, fix you cover, rm do you ( solo for him) the cypher part 1 to 4 with just rm jhope and suga.

Korean music is pretty much control by the 3 big company. BTS was not fully accepted in Korea from the start, but look who boost the Korean economy. Keep fighting BTS Army❤️❤️❤️

Oh no, its rarely the groups spreading hate towards one another. Most of them are friends or at least have mutual respect for one another because they've all been through that rough part of getting to where they are now. You can always seem fan-cams of them cheering for one another or singing/dancing along when the other are performing. Fans are the main part of it all honestly, they can be super toxic and are always arguing over such cliche things. Companies can also be a flame to the fire because it brings attention, but there hasn't been much of that in this day and age.

I agree fandoms can be more of a hindrance than anything .. sometimes even 'Army' (even tho most of these I don't consider real Army, i.e.: solos, mantis, etc). There's many groups I can't listen or get into because of things their fandoms have said or done. 😑

Jhope is unfortunately still considered the least popular member,but he’s not. He got almost 8-9 stadiums having 70000-100k armys cheer his name for 4 minutes. That’s talent, peak stage presence,great performer. I stan 20+ groups, yes BTS was/is most hated and attacked group in kpop.

The story of bts to success is really eye opening and touching. I got to know them in October 2020 through dynamite and black swan, then i loved their music since then. After watching videos about their struggles, i respected and loved them even more. The fact that they're still thriving even more today because of how huge they're becoming despite being a 'kpop boyband' as it has so much prejudice, they still manage to break records of music legends and set/break their own records to having a big impact in music and the world outside music as a group and individually. Their story should be turned into a film/ documentary that will inspire so many or even make the people who hated them or didn't vibe with their music to respect them. They're now releasing an 'anthology album' like do fans realise how huge this is ?! They're real musician and they will share some of their hidden/unheard versions of their old songs with us💜. They're beginning a new chapter in their careers and i will be here to enjoy and support💜.

There are about 100 groups that debut every year in Korea, and less than 1% will make the cut and stay around for a few years. Usually thoses groups come from big compagnies, specially the BIG3 (three biggest compagnies) who consist of YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment and SM Entertainment. Thoses compagnies have invested a lot in diverses business in Korea and Asia, they are very influencials, so much that they use a lot the media and also Naver (the Google of South Korea) to downplay group such as BTS even till this day. Also note that they tend to use thoses methods when BTS makes a comeback but also in politic, such as now with the highly sensitive enlistment talk about exemptions (for BTS). Now, Big Hit recently rebranded as HYBE (in 2021), the company of BTS, since their breakthrough they've gained a lot of money and are now surpassing compagnies such as mentioned earlier (BIG3), but although they have a lot of money, they are still making themselves a place in that landscape and they are not as influential as thoses compagnies who have been around for decades. So yes, between groups, compagnies and fandoms its a whole new complicated thing, it's messy and it's ruthless. And yes, BTS and ARMYs kept receiving hate, racism and xenophobia, xCeleste could literally had 10 more minutes for an update because 2021-until few weeks ago for the Grammys, the hate was constant. Ps. K-pop is very popular in the world, in Asia and South Korea, whoever idols are looked down upon by their peers in South Korea, well, less since k-pop became global, but it's not the genre that the general public listen to. BTS became pretty much the only group coming from the k-pop industry (they aren't k-pop anymore) that is loved by the general public with some k-pop soloists.

My thoughts on the War of Hormone controversy: In my opinion War of Hormone was not as misogynistic as some people make it out to be. To give you context, the lyrics were translated as something along the lines of “Girls are equations and we just do them” when really it means “Girls are equations and we solve it” A Korean Army said the translation in English were a bit off: “I was kinda surprised it's translation was "do" because that part "do them" CAN actually sound offensive to some people, because the meaning of that word 'do' is not clear. However I can clearly say that it's not meant that way, and Korean version lyrics tell that. Words are more specific, and not controversial in Korean version lyrics, because it doesn't say 'do. That part in Korean is 여자들은 방정식 우리 남자들은 해 which says we men are 해 is a word for mathematics, and it means the 'answer/the final number'. So it means they solve. the complex minds of the girls.” And the title itself gives you an idea on the meaning of the song. War of Hormone. An internal conflict with their hormones as young men. I see why it can be offensive to some people tho. I'm just proud that BTS, particularly RM, own up to it and aren't afraid to acknowledge it as a mistake.

Now you know why ARMY is so protective of BTS. It's a bond that will never be broken. You need to watch The Rise of Bangtan series. It's 21 Chapters but well worth your time.

We sport BTS not only because of the great music but also because of their character and personality. we feel their kind and pure hearts and this is the difference between them and the rest of the artists, that they are themselves and have not changed. They are wonderful.💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

The misogyny accusation was groundless, really, it was just the line "Girls are like a math equations we must solve them/do them" and people took the opportunity to accuse them for something else. Majority of ARMY weren't really upset by this and loved the song so much! Mostly were just antis taking this opportunity to drag them again for no reason. Namjoon consulting experts and taking this serious is just because they actually WANT to do music that doesn't hurt people but help them, since day one, they always said that, so I don't think it changed their goal and their music.

BTS: "Music & Artists for and healing". They want to include the entire humanity in their fandom.

This is such a great documentary from xCeleste and it only covers a small part of what they have had to and continue to deal with. A good point is that we as ARMY need to understand when and who to highlight when protecting the group. Sometimes we amplify negative voices that should not be given that time as it is what they are seeking (clout chasers or those after engagement). Those in the media though, we keep those receipts and do not let people slink back after time thinking we forgot. As others have said below when BTS debuted they were not part of the Big 3 entertainment company and they were referred to as 'monster rookies' as they won the majority of rookie awards and made a lot of people notice them. This did not sit well with the Big 3 who have very close links with the TV stations and media companies in South Korea. Those attacks from supposed ARMY fans, we have long suspected were targeted campaigns from the other Entertainment companies using troll farms etc. Anytime a comeback (the term for a new album release in SK) is announced for BTS we see a rise in personal attacks, victimisation of members from 'solo' fans and other methods that try to distract from the attention of the comeback. So much so we have bingo cards we use to check off. Big Hit which is now a subsidiary under HYBE has the last laugh. When they went public on the SK Stock Exchange, the demand and value was such that they operate on the top level and the other so called Big 3 stocks are on a lower tier.

When they were accused of Sajaegi, it was because their international fandom was growing bigger so their album sales were higher. Fans had to literally post receipts showing albums bought before people believed that the sales number were correct. As their company was not one of the big 3, articles about their initial / older album entering billboard 200 were very few. That's Bang PD said that international fans were more open to accepting BTS and BU storyline. Though I have to applaud k-army because they have had to really deal with tough times and accusations. There are a lot of kpop groups that debut each year and it's a very cut throat market. Plus the bigger companies have more budget and more control on the narrative through media. Also BTS have always been complimented for writing and answering questions seriously during press conferences. Even then, there will be some reports who will ask questions that they are hoping will create a controvery.

Yeah…what the Garbage Pail Kids segment didn’t mention was the fact that they released this piece during the rise of Asian hate so you could probably imagine how insensitive it was to release that when Asian men and women were already being brutalized in real life

Big companies see BTS as a threat even though they were nobodies in their first years. They know how talented and how hardworking they are.

While I do not consider myself an ARMY member and only discovered them in 2020 during the pandemic, I do really, really, really respect BTS. You might enjoy reacting to the live performance of "Born Singer" that I think made me respect this talented group of young men even more.

The whole looking down on BTS thing is due to Korea's business environment. Several big companies control majority of the market(such as Samsung in the tech industry).So when groups like BTS which came from a small agency that nobody knows become popular, other big players would get together and do whatever they can to sabotage BTS's success, so their supremacy can be maintained.

I became an army for their music. Their lyrics bring me the peace and confort I need, they are my home. Once I realized I was an army, I started studying their past and, watching this and some other documentals, that just enforced my proud of being called an army. I have nothing against the other artists, but I have everything against the fandoms.

xCeleste doesn't announce the groups, etc. but us long time kpop stans know who she is talking about. The problem is not with the artist, it's always with their crazy fans that want to cancel or discredit BTS' accomplishments because they love their group so much more. I was at the supermarket with my kids and I only talk Spanish with them. An old lady comes by and mutters something, I replied in German "sorry? I didn't catch that" to which she replied "Doesn't matter, you wouldn't understand anyway". I was WTF (I don't care she's old) and asked her what did she mean. And she said that I didn't speak German. I replied (still in German) "Am I not speaking German to you?" and she said something like "yeah, but you are not a German speaker", I said "well, I can speak 7 languages, that's more cool than speak 1" and she used the "bUt YoU aRe iN GeRmAnY"... Well, many English speakers do the same EVERYDAY, like the boyband guy and goes unnoticed unless confronted. Misogyny. The two songs in question are War of Hormone and Boy in Luv. You can decide for yourself how misogynistic they are, but as an American female I don’t see it at all. They are two of my favorite songs. Much tamer than most American songs (even songs by females -WAP yuck).

Yes the Korean kpop market is HUGE. 100’s groups debut every year and only like 1% will actually last longer the a few months or years. Also these shows, interviews, etc. are VERY important to get more attention and fans. Toxic fans from other groups, rival companies, even people paid by the other companies to send hate, internet, etc. pretty much we all against BTS. When you get to Rise of Bangtan It explains a little more but ARMY literally is who raised them. ARMY did a lot of promoting for BTS. ARMY in the early years actually sent them food, clothes, pans, etc. because they didn’t have money… Also it is so annoying but BTS are held at a double standard EVERYWHERE… it is crazy to think that this barely scratches the surface of what they have gone through and still go through… I do agree it is a shame that RM had to apologize and isn’t free to write whatever he wants, but his reaction shows his character. War of Hormone literally is about teenage boys battle their “war of hormones”. This song is literally them making fun of themselves and bring awareness to these changes. The translations are what is the problem and paint the song worse than it is. Their is a line something alone the lines “I just want to do them” but in the Korean language earlier they were talking about how girls are hard to figure out and want to understand them. Sorry I am not the greatest at explaining. It is an awesome song. Also to add on BTS had more fans (and still do) outside of Korea then inside of Korea. So some people where confuse how they could get their numbers if they didn’t have as many fans in Korea. I loved this video. What I find funny is that you were talking over the very spot where it was said that they would serve if / when called upon. LOL Jin is the one up for enlistment & he did say that he would serve when called. I love how ARMY has always, ALWAYS, supported BTS; had their backs. I'm sorry I didn't find them sooner. Honestly, I do not know how BTS remains so humble & kind. If only EVERYONE took their lead. A more humane group of young men will never be found. Bang PD did a wonderful job finding these young men & putting them together. They're from different walks of life, but all have a common ground in humanity, kindness, and integrity. They raise up the human race all on their own. I do not think I'd be able to "look the other way," if I had to face the hate they faced. It would more than likely change me. BTS deserve all the accolades & awards they receive, and so much more!
