@@Manueelaa From all the years we follow these boys we should know better. We should know that they literally write their hearts in their songs. Lately i really have this in the back of my mind that, they are not well, especially Namjoon. He always wear his heart on his sleeves and now it looks to me that they are pushing them too hard after Festa. I might be wrong of course, but this is my thoughts.

Blackswan is part of the MOTS7, thery're supposed to do the anthology album after MOTS7 with the samw reason they told use during festa. Nobody understood that the meaning of this songs is what they truly feel. When suga said during festa that it now hurts, that they are now just forcing themselves to come up witj music because they dont have something to say anymore, that really hit hard. That this song Black Swan is really what they meant. We've been blinded by all these visuals and aiming the goal of making thwm on top but we never anticipate that they are really tired and musically exhausted. I jusy admire the fact that they hung foranother 2yrs because of covid. Releasee chart topping songs and BE album were just amazing. Things happen for a reason. And the postponement of their 'break' means making them move to top more, their level is insane. You think 2019 was their peak, no. It's 2021-2022, and who knows? Maybe these coming months and years we would see them break their own records AGAIN & call that their peak once more. ❤️🫰🏻

After hearing BTS talked about their struggles during the 2022 Festa Dinner, and knowing that they are originally planning the "Chapter 2" after releasing "ON" and following up with the "Map of the Soul 7 World Tour"... i realized that even before the pandemic, BTS has been struggling all these years about losing their passion, their essence, their inspiration ...and lyrics of "Black Swan" just made more sense to me now. I'm more thankful for "PROOF" Anthology album every day. If BTS had ended chapter 1 with MOTS:7 they'd have left with songs like Black Swan, We are Bulletproof the Eternal, Louder than bombs and Shadow, which are so full of pain. With PROOF They gave us Yet to Come, For Youth and Run BTS instead, and they're full of resolve and hope.

Like you said, “Black Swan” is inspired by a quote: “A dancer dies twice. The first time is when he stops dancing and this first death is much more painful”. “Black swan” is about their fear that some day they’ll lose their passion for music and this would be their first death. They chose to use autotune in this song was to show the group's shadow (they're deepest collective fears/secrets) vocally, the fear being that they would fall out of love with their craft. It was RMs idea to use the autotune to blend their voices, (which makes sense since he adores Kanye and Kanye uses autotune on his vocals). Black swan is based on Jung's work of the map of the soul where the shadow, ego and persona (and more) are all equally important parts to a person's construct. The dance moves in particular you can see in the beginning they pluck what seems to be invisible string instruments, while at the end of the choreography they seem to be hanging by those very strings like puppets. Their shadow (fear/secret) has consumed them. Ok, so... the song draws inspiration from both the ballet (Swan Lake) in it's choreo and imagery, but also draws a lot of inspiration from the movie "Black Swan", which in turn is heavily based on the Japanese anime film "Perfect Blue". Both movies break identity and deal (in a non-obvious way) with Carl Jung's theory of the self: Persona, Ego, Shadow. In these movies, a female performer spirals into insanity as increased pressures in her career cause her to lose grip of herself and reality. “Black Swan” tells the story of Nina, a passionate ballerina (Natalie Portman) who struggles to maintain her sanity while competing for the main role (the White Swan, Odette) in “Swan Lake.” Meanwhile, “Perfect Blue” follows Mima, a former (Japanese) pop idol whose sense of reality begins to waiver as she attempts to transition into a career as a serious actress. Both stories feature a female protagonist is put in highly stressful situations and that makes them question their identity and ultimately conjure up a doppelganger that messes with their psyche (persona, shadow and ego, basically clash). Just as Nina suffers from the pressures of being a ballerina, Mima is also forced to deal with the strict expectations of being a Japanese idol. Their personal conflicts also bleed into their professional lives causing them to spiral out of control. In Nina’s case, it comes in the form of her oppressive mother and in Mima’s situation, it’s an obsessive stalker fan. At the core of the film, both protagonists have a psychological battle with themselves that results in hallucinations that blurs the lines between fiction and reality. In the end, like I said, these films break the self and deal with themes like loss of passion and the heartbreak that come with working for your dreams. Black Swan (BTS), at its core, reflects these themes. I think that Perfect Blue can be chillingly on point for BTS, since they too are idols and experience some of the things that Mima experienced as an idol and continues to go through. BTS reflect the core concepts of these movies, identity, and conceptualise them to reflect their fear of losing their passion for music and, by extension, losing themselves. They portray people who are afraid that music is all there is to them and are afraid of losing themselves if they lose their passion. And ohhhh boy, Jimin's dance haha he did train in ballet, albeit very minimally and as part of his main focus, which was contemporary and that's what he mostly trained for during high school. He is "professionally" trained in contemporary, hip-hop and idol dance. Even the members have said that Black Swan is Jimin's song, that he embodies the black swan. This is further highlighted in the 2020 MAMA version of Black Swan, where he does a duet with Jungkook! (here's the link for a breakdown of the moment twitter.com/mintynkks/status/1335236325373448192?s=20&t=2C90i3inGV9MBv5dgoiYQA Spoiler alert, since I dunno if you plan to react to the 2020MAMA performance. Which I HIGHLY recommend, it has an amazing performance of Dynamite as well). Anygays, Jimin's dance style is unique and probably near impossible to replicate since its highly influenced by his 8+ years experience in martial arts + hiphop training. +idol training + his contemporary (and minimal ballet and Korean traditional) training. He does a lot of tricking and aerials you could see with his medialuna (which is a very dangerous movement to do, because you can easily overrotate and injure your ankles) and with his movements here twitter.com/pjmgem/status/1466261374355402757?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA and here twitter.com/jikookheart/status/1465173437589110788?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA, during the live performance, where he basically does a one-handed cartwheel to cover more space. Black Swan is one of my favourite songs from BTS!

I trained in dance for 10 years a lifetime ago. (Yes, I died my first death.) But I found BTS looking for dance videos as I still find them relaxing. A year and a half ago the algorithm gave me Permission to Dance. It was cute and the dancing was really good. But I wondered if they did anything more difficult. That is when I discovered Black Swan. I was hooked seeing Jimin and the guys in the first few seconds. My dancer radar sounded an alarm! I am always so impressed by their dancing. I remember thinking how very different this is from anything I had ever seen by a band. Then I dissected the lyrics. That is when I decided I was going into the rabbit hole. Great vocals, rap, dance and deep lyrics.

This is gonna be a long comment: With respect to how you have mentioned numerous times how bts is helping you in self discovery and reigniting a lot of your passions, what comes to my mind is what I always think about, when people newly hear about bts. If you were stuck in the prejudices and stereptypes of the majority, and forcefully listened to them or gave up on them fully to satisfy the majority, you would have lost such a crucial experience bts provides. They are great because they have masterpieces in possibly any genre that fits a certain lots taste. But they transcend to greater brilliance and are legendary by the fact that once you accept their talent and get rid of your prejudices, it no more matters what genre, what choice of art, what industry, what language it is, but only and only their ability to make you as an audience feel every emotion and discover your own self through them! Even if you are pleased by their few works and are an ARMY, one will never fully understand the impact they have until they experience that journey that bts's works puts you through. I come from India and have trained in classical dance and music. If you read through theories of the creation of a perfect artist it actually gets very spiritual. And how you as an artist can ignite a spark in the audience is so detailed, it will blow one's mind. That kind of artistic growth I have seen in BTS and as a growing artist myself I have such deep respect for them.

Black Swan was written by RM( one of the very rare instances where Suga n J-Hope haven't written their lines). Considering the fact that in the Festa dinner RM was the one who looked the most musically exhausted/spent/ in need for rejuvenation, it makes a lot of sense that he was the one to write this gem. The fact that MOTS:7(2020) was supposed to be their last album before their grand world tour n subsequent break , it really shows they have been pushing themselves in these last 2 yrs without the inner motivation, just for ARMY. While I will forever be grateful that they did so n blessed us with more music during these trying times, but my heart breaks to think that they have been sacrificing their mental health, suppressing their artistic struggles for such a long time. I really hope they do whatever makes them heal and make great music exploring n expressing themselves individually and eventually when they deem fit, comeback together to bless us with more breathtaking BTS music. Also, i am so glad to hear that BTS music has in some ways helped you to be inspired again musically. All the best to you personally as well💜

@@jaycee2888 Thanks for your kind words of appreciation. Yes, i have read many many comments like that. But those people fail to realise that BTS have never been insincere about their music. They always express what they are or have been through. Their sincerity is one huge factor that sets them apart imo. The moment they realised they would have to compromise with their Art, they decided to take appropriate measures. This stepping away as a group for the time being is much required, from a practical pov. However close you are ( even in family or say with your life partner etc) one needs to have personal growth as well. These seven men are wildly different from eachother in every aspect imaginable. The fact that they operate so smoothly is no less than a miracle n a testament to how much they have kept their individuality aside for the group. Now if they want to spread their wings individually it's only human. And we shall cheer them on, after everything they have done for us. So, i am glad they have enough self awareness n maturity to take these steps towards a better future, as individuals n as BTS too. 💜

It is a bit connected to the BU but bear in mind the BU is a fictional storyline and not so relevant here. Here the reason why she connected it to other songs from the same era/ series of the albums 'Map of the Soul' is because the albums from this era are based on the concepts developed by the psychiatrist Carl Jung. They used this framework to depict their true feelings and what they were really going through (Concept of the ego, the persona, the shadow etc...). So even outside of the BU, their songs are also connected as they serve a general narrative about their lives and thoughts, which are developed in each album within an era especially for 3 of them: * the most beautiful moment in life/ Youth series of 3 albums : pt. 1, pt.2, Young Forever *the Love Yourself series: Her, Tear, Answer (+Face Yourself) *Map of the Soul: Persona, 7 So point is if you go into a song and know from which album it is from, it's already a huge clue and a key of understanding of their message and provides context... hope it's not too confusing and you get my point

This was their very first performance of Black Swan & the MV was dropped as a surprise. There are more performances each unique. I believe it was the ON:E concert where it extended into a solo dance by Jimin -beautiful. And of course the breathtaking performances at PTD concerts. There is also a MV with a dance ensemble interpretation. Black Swan is such a stand out sing/performance & hits so much more knowing that these feelings & thoughts were true to them at that time.

I love the format you follow! 💜 Thank you really for giving your time in breaking down the masterpieces they create. BTS music is layers upon layers of interwoven pieces of art, there's so much to pay attention to, tho it doesn't take away the fact that even the music alone is already a masterpiece by itself. I love how they mesh their personal stories in the conceptual art brilliantly (it actually make sense coz Namjoon, Yoongi, & Hobi's metaphor game is insane. Do you know that Yoongi also keeps a note full of his thoughts? My recent fave discovery is Yoongi's note from 2017 w/c he shared in fancafe that goes "a compass' needle always wavers before pointing in the right direction, life too is the same". The quote resurfaced in twitter coz he was holding a compass in Proof concept photo.). That's why knowing BTS as persons gives more depth to their music, like shedding layers of onion as you connect the events in their lives. We often say, we should separate the artist from the art (esp. when we know something bad abt the artist but we love what they create). But sometimes, it's actually really hard, because the art is the extension of the creator's self, their art contains their soul. I think the reason why many people love BTS discog aside from it being diverse & we could surely find a genre we are inclined to is because we can still find value in it even if it's not our thing, one big reason is meaningful LYRICS, the other is amazing PERFORMANCE. Before BTS, i don't really listen to rap, but look at me now going crazy w/ their cyphers, and now I'm open checking out rap artists. They opened my ears and my heart to a lot of things, making me see the goodness in other whole lot of things, not to mention how a lot of their music & lyrics are so motivating, healing, and transformative (if I speak more on this, this comment will not end).

36:23 V actually kicked j-hope in the head in this performance. As you can see the stage was a bit too small so it was very pushed together. They talked about the accident in a vlive V had later that night and he said sorry (not his fault though) and Hobi said he almost passed out. You can see it at 33:52 V is in the back on the left side and Hobi in the middle at the left side. It's not something you notice if you don't look for it though, they really are good at continuing performances when accidents happen.

I think you are the first reactor I've heard who already knew the quote from Martha Graham! And I can tell you had already taken time to think about that concept of losing one's inspiration and what that means to performers and to yourself. Bookish Theories has great insight, which she balances with great humor. "After we see Hobi's shadow going back into the depths of himself, Jungkook AND HIS CORSET move on..." And she adds the visual of Kermit the Frog gesturing like a lovely assistant on a gameshow, lol! She's just brilliant. BTS songs and performances are made to be studied and understood and enjoyed on a deep level, so I love your "Full Experience" format! Well done!

Like you said this song becomes even more important - they had planned to go on tour in 2020 and afterwards wanted to go on a break. Then the pandemic happened and they just plodded on and Dynamite happened. The pandemic was both blessing and bane for them but I am glad they are taking the break now to get new experiences and can continue as a group later. I am glad that BTS inspires you, these guys inspire so many so it is only good and well that we grant them the same now. BS is not a part of the BU - however there are many videos that in retrospect have become a sub-BU a universe within the universe where the art merges with real life .. the Persona merging with the Shadow. We are on a heck of a journey and it started back in 2013. When Bang PD decided that these seven young men should write their own songs, show their own voices and thoughts, he helped create magic and a rawness and genuineness a lot of ppl consciously and unconsciously react to.

3rd comment😂 On J-Hope.. the rappers usually always rap their own lines but here I think RM wrote most of the song However! J-Hope released his 1st mixtape 'Hope World' back in 2018 in which he explores the concept of the Pandora Box, containing the 7 evils/7 deadly sins and how once unleashed the only thing remaining was Hope. So overall a very hopeful project but the final track of the mixtape 'Blue side' is a bit sadder and the artwork for it this track contains a 'Jack in the Box'... the name of his upcoming album and foreshadowing his new darker project. In the tracklist we saw one of the track is called Pandora Box and we saw in the MORE mv he's put everything in the box... so it was all mostly planned since at least 2018! He confirmed it on one of his recent live stream and said "I'm not called J-Hope for nothing"😂 He had a vision!!

Thank you 😊💜. Your interpretation is spot on. Apparently Namjoon wrote Black Swan after watching the movie (or so I've heard), and it reflects that very fear. And as you say, Yoongi and Namjoon pretty much spell it out right at the beginning.💜 It always surprises me, how people can watch the MV - with Captions on - and still not get it. I hate to admit it, but there are times I just want to hell at them "It's right there in black and white. They've literally spelled it out for you!" Some of the interpretations I've seen people come up with have left me wondering if we've been watching the same MV. It's a beautiful, painful song; given extra poignancy due to recent events💜💜 By the way, Black Swan is my favourite BTS song. The MV is gorgeous. And Jimin's dancing is breathtaking 💜💜💜 There are also two behind the scenes videos for this song, one solely concentrating on Jimin's dance solo.

John, thank you. I am so impressed by your mature approach to BTS' work - you take them seriously and look deeply into their work. This song is both deep, and deeply sad, especially in the context of what we now know. It's also very rich not only in the symbology and lyrics but the use of guitar to mimic traditional Korean instrument the kayageum - I love this. I had to smile at your assessment of "normal" trap lyrics being superficial, because, as you may have now realised, EVERYTHING BTS do goes deep. I thoroughly doubt they are capable of trivial. There are some songs which I strongly disliked on first hearing (including exploring the translations), but when I looked into more authoritative translations I realised they actually meant something deeper and much more important - even perhaps controversial in Korea - they are Anpanman and Gogo - very light, very funny/funny, quite childlike on first sight - BUT! I love your appreciation of Bookish Theories - I love her explorations too! And her sense of humour.

I took my time watching your reaction to Black Swan because you always have something insightful to say and I didn’t want to miss any of it. I read books in a specific genre which has conventions so I meet the authors and follow them on Facebook. Many of them are prolific writers but occasionally they hit a wall and their muse goes. It’s devastating for them. When you think that BTS has well over 300 songs in their repertoire most of which they’ve written it’s inevitable that they would hit a wall. When they nearly split in 2018 Outro:Tear was the song which described the turmoil they were going through. I wonder if Black Swan was such a song for this new phase they are entering. Had Covid not happened would they have started to branch out into solo careers sooner following the tour they were about to embark on? Little clues seem to have been there over the last year and a half. Son Sungdeuk said it is becoming increasingly difficult to choreograph their songs so that each member gets a chance to be in the fore because songs are expected to be shorter these days. RM Jin and V expressing the struggles they were having. They need something to kickstart their creative juices and bring them back to life and working solo some of the time is how they’re tackling it. Black Swan is so incredibly clever I can’t believe that it wasn’t nominated for a Grammy. Surely it would’ve won despite the so called language barrier? Yoongi had to let you down on this one and wear a Britney mic because of the beautiful hand movements he needed to do. Jimin’s wonderful dancing and the flicks the do at the end of this really make this for me.

The backstory to V's oversized clothes is cause he has a skin condition that worsens when he gets overheated in the end makes him break out in inflamed itchy rashes over his body. It's the same medical condition I have as well. When I'm sleeping I will unconsciously begin to scratch so much I wake up bleeding. That's why I sleep with the AC running all year round cuz I like the to sleep with blankets on. I sometimes have to sleep with ice packs or cold patches in the summer time too. So I feel for him when the stylist makes him wear skin tight clothes, or really heavy jackets and sweaters etc on stage or outside performing. I remember for his solo stage he had worn a beaded jacket. He said it was so heavy and hot it made it hard to perform in it. He asked them to remove sum of the beading but they refuse as it would make the jacket look different. He must get so uncomfortable. If u look closely u can see him itching on stage sometimes. It's like when a member of NUÉST who is allergic to salt and was forced to dance and sing covered in the stuff it's so dangerous tho.

I love how you rave about their precision, and that you were watching for a mistake and there just weren't any. And then you specifically point out the spinning thing they do near the end, and say that you'd head but one of the other guys... Well... V kicked JHope in the head on that move. You can just see it at 33:53. JHope's hair flies out, and he touches the side of his face and just keeps dancing. Blink and you'll miss it. There's a behind the scenes where they talk about it, and Hobi said he nearly passed out from it. They make mistakes, but their level of talent and professionalism is such that those mistakes are rarely seen, and I admire them so much for it.

Another great reaction!! I really like how you are diving into the songs and the explanation videos are very well done. This is such an amazing concept and song and it really does resonate with the break they are taking now. The way Jimin shines in Black Swan is so beautiful! He's such an amazing performer and brilliant dancer. The theatre they filmed it in seems to reflect the song - are they celebrating past glories, do they have anything to look forward to, is all their talent in the past. Can't wait for you to see the MMA!

I don't know if anyone has addressed it but...when James is doin the intro, the really tall guy on the left is BrisXLife, aka Terry, one of the biggest kpop reactors and massive Army. He's got a video about the whole experience of being there, and JK recognizing him.

Jungkook and his corset lols. Bookish Theories and Doolset are the top when it comes to the interpretation of BTS's songs, lyrics and the whole connection to the BU plus the literary, philosophical, psychological meanings of it all.

Tar has a skin condition called Cholinergic Urticaria that causes him to break out in itchy rashes when he gets overheated. That's why he wears oversized clothes so often, to allow air flow to help keep him cooler than tighter clothes would. Plus, I think he just likes baggier clothes.

You got the meaning right at the start. Great! This was my intro to BTS and I've been hooked ever since. The MMA performance is different but beautiful. I think you should also check out a Live from their Permission to Dance concerts (which would be a fancam). The costumes and group choreo is Soooo good! Love how you do lyrics, then MV, then dance practice, then Live. Oh, and in the James Corden live, I heard (but didn't see) that V actually accidentally kicked J-Hope in the face, but they are so professional they kept going like nothing happened.

Black Swan is art. It may be one of the greatest songs I ever heard. It's just so deep and beautiful and painful. 💜
