    When I was a young child I had to have a surgical operation. Afterwards I couldn't speak for days. On the second day a kid in the bed next to me had a system and TV set up on a cart and was playing some war game. He was released the next day but not before telling the nurse that I could use his set up till I was better. The game he was playing was metal slug 2 and from that day on I was a gamer for life.

    My 12-year-old son discovered Metal Slug 3 in a local ice cream shop that features and small arcade of classic games and pinball. And he was completely in love and fascinated with the pixel art. He declared it a masterpiece. We got the SNK port for the Playstation to explore all the alternative routes and got the soundtrack. 22 years later and this game is making fans of people not even born when it came out.

    Things really went downhill with 4 and 5. I hear the original team came back for 6, but I just never felt the passion in that last game. 1, 2, X, and 3 will always be the only Metal Slug canon for me.

  • @petkofuchalski9809

    the biggest porblem with 5 is that it never was finished completely. A shit ton of the game was cut including several bosses, one of them called "Stone Turtle". so basically to put it in perspective, the last boss you fight in the game was supposed to be the last phase, the rest was cut. The bosses are even referenced in the MGD/MGA games.

    This video heaps an incredible amount of praise and credit for Metal Slug's vision on Kazuma Kujo, who worked as CO-PLANNER on the first game in the series, before leaving the team. I attribute this to poor research during the writing of this script, because there have been many interviews with staff who worked on Metal Slug that directly contradict a lot of the misinformation shared here. In Slopes' defense: behind the scenes stories & supplemental material about Metal Slug have been notoriously hard to come by for most of the series' lifespan, as all the devs worked under aliases. For decades, any info about the creation of M.Slug was based on urban legend & rumours. In recent years, many interviews have been conducted & translated that set the record straight, and debunk/correct a large number of the kind of "did you know gaming" trivia bits that this video deals in.

    You caught the stomach cancer earlier than later and YOU WILL make a quick recovery!! The love of your life will either come back or if a higher power feels as such, YOU WILL discover someone that is even better for you. The only thing you cant take back is suicide. But , as long as you never quit, life always comes around again. I've experienced many defeats myself, but by the grace of God, time and wisdom have made me better even if at the time I felt like 'am I ever going to feel good again"? I know that feeling of a woman and not being able to think of nothing else. Believe me, life does heal all wounds . Good luck friend.

    I discovered In The Hunt by accident -- it had "Metal Slug: Submarine" on the cover (yeah, bootlegs). It confused me at first but the graphics were a sure sign that it was somehow related to Metal Slug... and, 20 years later, here I am getting my mind blown over the fact that it indeed was the precursor to the greatest series of all time. Thank you for this, am currently diving (*wink*) in nostalgia.

    Metal Slug 5 was my favorite installment, while it was basically a remastered version of 1 and 2. Using different end bosses and characters, settings etc. I enjoyed the new faction. The Ptolemaic Army. While some of its units were repaints of the original modern army tanks. There were lots of new addons. Like Guerilla soldiers replacing the regular troops. Special ops soldiers. The standing up Metal Slug. The gunner units. (Giant robot mechs) And some additional enemies as well. (Enemy Slugs for once) flying hovercrafts. A new recreation of the rolling bomb tower. The wall drones. The guerilla air raiding squads. And the cultist. But most specifically. The unique units you fight in the game. It seems different and unique with the boss fights. Metal Rear from the first mission felt like the players living perspective of what the slugs were made to do. Black Hound from the secret route was the appitomy of a war machine. Its an appropriate way to recreate the slug. Make it deadlier, and then show it how bad that can turn out, the wall climber was a breath of fresh air. It was unique. And felt that attacking it was very fun. The sand crawler was a pain in the ass... And I enjoyed every second getting angry at the sheer amount of falling projectiles that seemed impossible to dodge. The mammoth towers utilised what others would call a general nuisance, and made it interesting. Evil spirit was a very intense battle, and the remix of it was the best version for the final battle. Others, like the unused Stone Turtle would've been interesting either way. And the giant bomber plane was an epic air battle to the last second. And its destructions was what you anticipated for. That's all I have to say about the fifth installment. Enjoy your day

    I remember this video coming out and I had no idea what a 'Metal Slug' was, but at the beginning of this year, I got into a SNK phase and I'm glad, and I think this video is why I only have MS1 and 3 on my Switch, but damn I've enjoyed them, especially 3 (Fio best girl). I might suck at them, but mowing down soldiers and other things is super fun, and I'm still waiting for a Metal Slug team in KoF.

    Metal Slug 2 suffers from a little bit of slowdown? The slowdown makes the game unplayable, which is why most people stick with the X version of the game.

  • @drewsebastino2889

    @drewsebastino2889

    7 жыл бұрын

    It makes the slowdown in Gradius III and Super R-Type look like a joke in comparison. What's really insulting is that the Metal Slug games only run at 30fps to begin with. The speed then gets reduced to 15fps when it slows down, (it should be 20fps because 60/3, but there's a bug in the already terrible code that halts the game for an extra frame) which is about Super FX framerate. The similar Gun Force 2 (not "Geo Force 2") at least targets 60fps. It was on slightly more powerful hardware, but there is also much more action.

    blog.system11.org/?p=1442 There's a fix for Metal Slug 2 that greatly improves the speed. I burned an Eeprom and put it in my actual cartridge- but it's probably just as easy to use that rom and use it in an emu I'd wager.

    Because they never implemented any kind of dodge maneuver throughout the series, I argue against that Metal slug is the kind of game where "its your fault you got killed" since your characters have big hit box's, can only move one speed, and all the projectiles move faster then you, its still a fun series but its not a fair challenge, its a Quarter Muncher.

    I have fond memories as a child, whenever my grandmother would take care of me, she’d occasionally take me with her to our nearest SackNSave (remember those?). And while she would do shopping or while she was checking out, she’d give me a few quarters to play the few arcade cabinets they had, but the one I always played was Metal Slug. Loved it, and there have been times on my life where I on and off again become obsessed with it. It’s always been one of my favorite series from any form of games. I love everything about it, and it remind me of my childhood. Even the main character has my fathers first name and a last name very similar to mine. But above all else, it reminds me of my grandmother whom I love dearly and is still around.

    Without a doubt my favorite arcade game ever made, now just to get around to playing the other six! The love and care put into the original still blows me away. The animations were so fluid it was like playing a truly interactive movie. The art style as well I really enjoyed, with it being both viscerally realistic and cartoonish at the same time. I've also yet to experience another arcade game that was as crazy loud as the original! If you're ever fortunate enough to play an original machine, it will be a truly memorable experience. This is the first video of yours I've seen, and I've already upped and subbed. You did a great job covering a game series I've loved since my first glance at it in arcades, and filled in much more of its history that I was not aware of. There's a genius to its graphics and art style that has always been pleasing and compelling to me. Taking everything into account, it's a perfect mixture of Super Deformed/chibi, true grit, explosions galore, dangerous warfare, wacky and imaginative but ultimately vicious enemies, strange mega-weapons, layers upon layers of backgrounds and environments overflowing with detail small and large, heroes you really come to care about, a mission you want to complete even though you hate to see it end...and the eponymous Metal Slug tank, definitely inspired by Dominion Tank Police; cute as a pug puppy, but as pugnacious and deadly as an enraged pitbull. If you don't care for the game itself, but have even an iota of liking for that tank itself, you're all right by me. It's a great game series, even when it wasn't necessarily building upon itself as it did in 1 through 3. Any criticisms are trivial quibbles compared to other game series. Even if another MS game never comes about, the series has a long-lasting legacy and replayability factor that'll keep you satiated with gaming fun and challenge, and your brain saturated with visual candy. Again, great job covering it all. Looking forward to watching Splatterhouse and Double Dragon next. Keep up the good work. :-)

    Daniel Ibbertson: You are most welcome. Thank you for the effort you put into researching and creating the video, especially in getting a complete list of the game's many iterations! I had no idea how many Metal Slug titles there were. The same laud and kudos apply equally to the other two videos. Great work! I decided to watch this again today, and the beginning made me think about how we've all said "this particular arcade game/home game system/XX-bit generation/level of interactivity is the apex of video gaming; nothing will ever top it". That thought sparked a thread of a memory... Long before Computer Space and Pong were but gleams in their creators' eyes, Preston Blair, an MGM/Tex Avery and Disney animator, and author of some great how-to-draw books like "How To Animate Film Cartoons", had an equally grand and innovative idea as theirs, perhaps grander still for Blair's time. I've tried but have not yet found the paragraph I need to be correct about Blair's notion. It should be somewhere, in a PDF of one of his books. Until I do find it, I hope that memory serves me well. The paragraph is a footnote in one of his books from the late '50s or early '60s. Again, if I'm correct, Blair mentioned that he and others had thought of, or were planning on, using animation of human characters to make an interactive tennis game that would be played on television screens. Animators like him would create some kind of databank of moves, poses, gestures, etc. for two onscreen tennis players, and a computer/videotape hybrid of some kind would take the players' control inputs (whether by control pad or advanced technical wizardry to read players' bodily movements), figure out the result, and "play" or "draw" the proper animation segments for each side, simulating a tennis match. If such a game came to fruition, even if it took the space of one of those old indoor computer golf simulators, it would have made a small game like Pong look positively prehistoric in comparison, and gaming in general would have taken more of a full-motion video, quick-time sequence direction. Technology would still need plenty of time to catch up with Blair's cool concept, though. I just wanted to pass that along as an interesting aside to how we've seen video games evolve. Blair's tennis, or some other sport he saw fit to simulate, could have made a lightspeed jump ahead.
