People always complain about comercial songs about them, but nobody talks about that this is the way that an old band could survive. This song is clearly modern rock/metal and it’s good to know that they went on this way even if they have modern and comercial elements.

It's hilarious watching the shock on peoples face when they hear Muses stuff beyond the more recent singles. 'I thought they were a pop / rock band'.... Nope, they just chuck out some radio friendly stuff and get on with their day. Peer behind the curtain and this kind of stuff is what you'll see.

@@AshToneAudio kinda. the spirit the riffs are written in is not new to muse. its actually quite old. the "upgrade" is the tone, its considerably more filthy than usual. in a metaphorical sense, this is muses version of Paradise losts return-to-form in "Beneath the broken earth". The old fans know EXACTLY what is happening, while the newcomers get some fresh stuff. regardless, you kinda cant release the same album many times over - something was coming anyway. have to admit, this direction is rewarding.

Fans have wanted "Metal Muse" for a long long time - there was even posts on the official forums years ago wanting Chris to make his own metal band :D I think now its about cementing a legacy. This is album 9 (if you dont count Hullabaloo), I personally think they will stop at 10. If so, then 9 & 10 could be the most important albums to date to finish on a high and give back to those that have followed from the beginning. I don't know, maybe I'm talking crap :P

Been a muse fans since new born. Muse have always been a band that have openly looked for inspiration from others, hence the name 'Muse.' You hear a lot of Queen, Bowie, punk, funk etc in their songs. Even tributes like Blondies 'call me' in their song 'Uprising' They don't really have a corporate business sense as they blow a lot of earnings on their live gigs. Each album has an individual sound to it and experiments within it. I'd say that this is just the theme of the album rather than a money spinner. They have been heavy in the past and Chris the bassist is has always pushed Muse to the heavier side. Matt generally like prog rock and classical influences. All I'm all, I think this is overdue

It's so funny how you suggested it's a market trick to win the new audience, cause it's actually the opposite: Muse have many hardcore fans who always want a havier sound because Muse used to be much havier. In this song Matt is kinda joking about his relationships with the hardcore fans. Whab-whab synth at the beginning (and hadrcore fans hate Madness and Dig Down), pop sound. Then it starts to build up and just kicking on your head with riff: you want heavy? TAKE THIS THAKE THIS XD and then you go back and forth with that. When you think "okay Mattt, you]re still a rocker", he gives you a breakedown: "still not hard enough? (Drones flashback) - TAKE THIS". Well this man used to sing about the problematique (Map of the Problematique life 2006 is a pure beuaty of a song) with his romantic relationships, now that he is happy married he pwobably wants to talk with fans XD To know what I'm talking about try life versions Stockholm Syndrome 2010 France, Assasin 2015, Reapers 2015, Micro Cuts (2001), Dead star (2001) , Agitated (2000)

Long time Muse fan. Not a fan of metal and I love this new song. Bit heavy for me, as i like their normal, more electronic sound better, but I can't deny this song kicks ass.

Interpretation; it seems most folk completely miss the meaning behind the lyrics. The track has another title; 'Living Vicariously', & may be better described by a phrase from the song itself; 'Psychological Warfare'. For it's about a world-wide psychological warfare between a few old men (the old dude in a wheel chair) & the mindless masses (represented by those under his control). So the one singing the words is standing firm - outside the visuals - getting stronger by refusing to 'stand down', which is what he would be doing by joining in the system of manipulation by the slave-master over the masses of mindless slaves. An outstanding song with incredibly intelligent lyrics by a most relevant band. 😃

Verses are bit leaning imagine dragons which not a good thing, chorus is okay, guitars get heavy which is a good thing, too heavy for radio. So it’s interesting if it will get on the radio for the mainstream. It’s a mixed bag.
