Metal Parts In Our Fuel System, Brass Fittings and Copper Seals

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We are doing a little myth-busting today, talking about some common "replacement parts" that should never be installed in your Sprinter. Specifically brass fuel fittings and Honda washers have no place in our vans.

My ML w163 had a constant injector leak on cylinder 1. I ended up using a Honda washer to fix the problem.

Can you explain why? Is there something holding your injector up so it cannot push down on the proper thickness of a copper seal? Is there something different about the copper in the Honda washer? Or on the last effort with a Honda washer in hand, did you pull out all the stops and make damn-sure everything was right this time? That will be why the problem is finally solved. Without a plausible explanation, the Honda seal is just a magic trick and I don't believe in magic any more.

hello,im gettin oil in my cooling system...not much but enough to ruin my day..ive replaced the engine oil cooler and that isnt the problem...ive flushed and flushed and i know it isnt leftover oil from the original leak....any thoughts on where this oil might be coming from? any insight would be greatly appreciated

How much oil are we talking about? Does it look like gravy in the radiator or did it before the oil cooler exchange? how did you wash the oil out? Just waster or Dawn dishwashing soap?

@@FloridaVanMan not much but it adds up after awhile....it never emulsifies...i replaced the oil cooler and checked the old one and from what i can tell the original one wasnt the problem...ive been trying to diagnose this prob but all i came up with is poor timing covers castings...read on a forum that inside where the oil filter goes the alum is porous and can leak oil into the cooling system...checked that looked good..i flushed with dawn dishwashing soap about 4-5 times.. came out clean but in two weeks i had bout a quarter inch of oil under my rad cap....never mixing with oil....that was prob 4k miles...so what ive been doin is on the weekend i take a pump thats on my drill...i suck out about 3/4 of a gallon of coolant thru the rad cap...always tryin to skim off the top..thats where most of the oil ends up...i strain the oil out that and put it back in my radiator...then once a month on a thurs night i take coolant out my cap...put bout a quart on laundry det in the rad and top off with water....drive it on friday and over the weekend i flush and put in new coolant...then fr the next month i rinse n repeat...i do have a spare engine but i dont want to pull that trigger yet....what im wondering is what is my plan of action with THIS engine...should i do a head gasket and redo the timimg chain cover?...maybe theres a crack somewhere?

is the oil passage from the block to the head anywhere near a water jacket?

Not particularly close and very little pressure difference between the two systems so unlikely to fail there when the gasket construction is designed for MUCH higher pressure difference a few centimeters away. @@needlemiejer143

I don't know about timing chain cover issues, but I still have a lot to learn about these vans. With they symptoms you describe I'd be looking for a crack in the head, not the gasket. My experience this deep in the engine is growing, but limited so far. @@needlemiejer143
