Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

KITPLANES editor at large Paul Dye explains the best times to use the so-called step drill (also called a UniBit) for drilling larger holes in aluminum. This is one of those tools that will save you time and effort in your aircraft build.

Use Cutting Wax to prevent chip welding to bit on aluminum and to prevent premature wear on stainless. And thank you Paul Dye and Kitplanes for making this series!

I like the quick deburr option of the step drill. But i don't know how to sharpen those step drills. So i totally agree on dedicating a step drill for only aluminum this way you will always have a nice step drill.

My time is past - no building an airplane in my future. Nevertheless, I *really* appreciate the education in tooling and techniques, which I DO expect to be able to use in the years ahead.

I might add… always clamp your work piece down when drilling the larger holes. At some point, the larger radius can torque the aluminum right off the table and bugger up your hole/your person 😀. I know… common sense, but I still haven’t learned!

Denatured alcohol will remove the Sharpie ink from the bit.

The only thing I don't love about step drills is the cost.

Which models/types are strong and powerful for hard steel jobs.I bought a set of the step drill that looks like the brass colour the type you have on the work bench and it doesn't work good at all, instead of boring holes,it gets so hot and start emitting smoke.

FWIW, I wrap a colored tape on the next up step for a marker. Then no need to clean ink. Not a big difference.

Paul says, "As with any drilling of stainless, you want to go slow and not generate too much heat, or you will simple harden it, and make it almost impossible to drill. I also recommend backing up your work with a sacrificial wood block. A better solution for larger holes in stainless is a Greenlee style punch, but a step drill can be used if done carefully."
