Metal Fatigue Review

Ойындар

Metal Fatigue is an RTS game that's vaguely similar to Total Annihilation, but less good with mechs. I don't fully understand what this is, Nightdive Studios thought it was worth some time to rerelease.

    Reason for the missing music tracks is probably expired music licenses. A commissioned 3rd-party composer or licensed tracks were likely hired/bought for use in the game. The rights for this music is held for a limited time before it can't be sold anymore without renewing the rights. This has happened in other games. Mafia 2 had a large repertorie of 40' and 50's music that was patched out several years after release. The other option was to cease selling the game.

    I was about to question the likelyhood of just one third of the track being third party, but then remembered it's orchestral. My ears aren't good enough to tell if that's an actual orchestra (somewhat unlikely), but that or the composer not wanting to cheapen their work could be the reason. It'd be nice to get confirmation if this is the reason or not.

    Or that a lot of CD-ROM games at the time had their music as actual music tracks played straight off the disc. I think Quake 1 & 2 did this. Maybe some issue where a lot of reissued games from that era only grabbed the data track and none of the music? It would just be too much work to do so?

  • @albertjordan3249

    @albertjordan3249

    Yup, people like to think that all media is permanent and immutable. Similar to how the BBC recorded over a ton of its old programming (Doctor Who being a famous example) to save tape. The BBC didn't think their broadcasts were worth saving because tape was expensive and they thought if they REALLY wanted to broadcast it again they would just assemble the actors (or an entirely different set if necessary) and do it again. They considered them as essentially televised plays... as long as you have the script you can always put the play on again. Similarly with music licensing there is no way of knowing how popular a game is going to be, or that people are going to play it 2 decades later. So its a lot cheaper to get a limited license rather than an unlimited one that is permanently bound to the product in perpetuity. Digital distribution wasn't even a consideration back then (steam wouldn't exist for another 4 years), and the idea that your game would live on beyond the original run of CD-ROMs wasn't something anybody thought about.

    That's a problem with such great games that use such great yet unfortunately timed music licenses... and I fear for the likes of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy as the years go by. Here's hoping we get a gaming group that focuses on restoring these licenses, akin to Nightdive bringing back abandonware to become officialware. Would even say the same on bringing back licensed games like the LotR: Battle for Middle-earth duology, Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie, and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena to the likes of Steam and GOG without a hassle.

    I remember getting really invested in this game's story as a kid, I know it's generic and the voice acting isn't great but I liked the trope of rival brothers each finding their own way in life, growing apart as they invest themselves in each different faction, etc. It also ends in a really bleak cliffhanger, that at the moment hit me like brick wall of existential dread.

    I remember coming across to the demo of this game when I was a little kid. It was the first two episodes of Rimtech and it completely blew my mind. Since I was a little kid and no way knew where I could buy the whole game, I played the same two episodes for hours and hours. Heck, I don't even know whether a place in my country, Turkey, sold this at that time but I remember growing up and searching for a bootleg version of it in internet cafes later in my life yet, nobody seemed to have it or knew about it. Needless to say, I bought it today and played the skirmish the same way I played back when I was young. Nearly destroying the enemy just enough to not quit but to enough to leave me do what I want. Building bases and having a infighting with my combots among my ranks... After 20 years of searching and reuniting with this gem, I think it still holds up... Thank you Mandalore, for giving me a chance to fulfill my younger self's dream!

    If you want a good mech game to talk about chrome hounds is a neat little game from the early 2000’s. I think it’s only on the Xbox 360 but I could be wrong. If mandalore does end up talking about it, it will be about a 10-15 minute video, the game is short and the multiplayer servers were turned off years ago.

I instantly took the orbital layer and took it over and completely neglected my ground defenses. Some large amount of time later (however long it took the show i was watching to finish) i decided to stage my re-invasion of the surface. It was COVERED in enemy bases. Having read it now it almost felt like Blame!. This mass sprawling complex of endless AI hate. I'm not sure it'd hold up if I went back and tried to recreate it, but it was such a fun memory. It really is a shame though because you came to the same conclusion I did. There's something here, but it's an expansion and a polish away from being something great. Shame it never got that chance.

I look forward to your videos because I absolutely love the way you explain every single detail and that is something I truly appreciate in a gamer. But my thanks isn't just for your game videos/reviews, it's for something extremely important to me. For many years of my gaming life, there was this game that eluded me completely. I only knew a single mechanic in it - 'You could pick up enemy robot parts and make robots at your base'. I have searched high & low for a game with that description but to no avail. At the time I played this, I was extremely young & was playing a demo version that was available in India which is a huge thing. So when I tuned into your latest video - Metal Fatigue - I kid you not, I leapt in absolute joy. The moment you mentioned about robot parts falling off, a well of memories came back to me and I finally found the game I have been looking for almost 20 years I guess. I truly want to say this, 'Thank You'. Thank you very much for bringing back a piece of my childhood to me. All factions in video games are variations on the same three archetypes: The vaguely American empire of boxy tanky blue guys, the red ragtag aggressive rebels, and the purple alien obsessed religious zealots with advanced technology. In C&C Tiberium Wars you've got GDI, NOD, and Scrin in that order. The variations being that the Scrin aren't obsessed with aliens, they are aliens. In Supreme Commander, you've got the UEF, the Cybran, and the Aeon Illuminate. Except the Cybrans aren't ragtag, their tech is more advanced Aeon tech in some aspects like AI because they're cyborgs, and they're also very well organized since they're led by QAI. Also the Aeon are green. Even in Brigador, you've got the Loyalists, the Corvid, and Spacers. The colors are all different with grey yellow Loyalists, light blue Corvids, and wacky orange white Spacers. Also, the Spacers aren't obsessed with aliens, they're just crazy space weirdos. But there's a clear trend, if you've got three factions they're gonna be these three factions. And if you've got two it'll just be the first two, and then when they add a third, it'll be the alien dudes.

    Remember being like 12 years old and going to an Electronic Boutique (remember those) and pickup up the box for this game and thinking it was the coolest thing ever (as i loved mech stuff as a kid, thanks gundam wing). Got the game and could never get it to work on my PC. Years later I found out the devs that made this game also made one of my favorite jank console rts games, Aliens Versus Predator: Extinction. Studio only made ports aftter thant and closed down by 2007. rip Zono

    Freelancer might be a good choice for a game to try out. I think it's old enough to be worth trying now. Especially with the Discovery mod. It's a pretty great game to compare to the current state of Open World space games.

    The way you explained the factions sounds exactly like planetside lore. The colours even match the factions theme. there must be a link but as you said. nothing online about it.

    With millions/billions of games, thousands of developers, and many variations of the same idea out there, there's bound to be ones eerily similar to each other in some form.
