Metal Detecting Turks & Caicos: BIG TROUBLE In Paradise, XP Deus 2 Design Flaw

Turks & Caicos Islands is metal detecting heaven. Grace Bay attracts millions of tourists each year and the beautiful aquamarine waters are heavenly to swim and snorkel in. Many people drop treasures in these waters. I was off to a hot start but a design flaw to the Deus 2 exposed itself. The XP Deus 2 is an incredible detector, but even incredible machines have design flaws. This flaw happened at the wrong time. I was looking forward to this trip for years.

Clamp the broken part to the top of the control box. It will still work. There is no mechanical/electrical connection. It works on induction. Doesnt matter if the end piece is broken off. Just make sure the wire is placed in the groove on top of the control box and all is good. Coil and control box can go under water and work fine.

You can strip the end of the wire, and if you can find some heat shrink tubing to cover the end that stripped. Then you can maybe zip tie it or something else to your remote.

Hey Merrill, beautiful scenery! About the Deus... I'm fairly certain that little plastic piece that broke off doesn't make much difference, especially if you are only putting the coil in the water.. use that clip on top of the deus to just keep that wire snug against the control box and it should still work no problem. I can't be sure it'll work fully submerged because water has the chance to get into the wire but it'll for sure still work in shallow water up to the box. Keep on swingin'!

Maybe I can help you today. ***Super glue and baking soda will mend most hard plastics.*** The baking soda acts as a catalyst and hardener that causes a heat reaction and instantly bonds. You will lightly apply glue to one broken side and dust the other with baking soda and, on a flat surface, fit them together precisely. The cracks can be filled the same way with powder and glue, excess can be shaved with a knife or razor. The bond will be temporarily stronger than the plastic. If needed you might have to wedge something small and conductive between whatever conductor is in there to make continuity, like foil or a coil of wire. Don't give up, please try this, go, go go! Regardless of what happens, you are the best, I hope you have a great trip with your family!

I assume it's sill working even when it's snapped. It's enough if you can just attach the head of that antenna cable close to the system unit. I personally use clear water sealed bag which is hanging on my neck and end of that cable is just taped behind the bag. So it's not attached to the top of the unit and it still works perfectly.

PS, “tethering” a little bitty wire from a coil to a box instead of hard wiring it in in a beach and dive version sounds like a huge design flaw. Why I use a PI with a hard wired coil instead. Of course I couldn’t touch an iron filled beach with it!

Nice, always great to detect a new place especially a beach like that. All is not lost ,as long as the antenna wire is sitting on the remote it will connect to the coil. maybe wrap the wire with some tape to make it a little thicker and attach the clip over it. Maybe a little silicone on the wire tip to keep water out. I have done this on a couple occasions. I purposely have now several replacement antenna wires.

Merrill, antennae will still work. Just strip off the outer jacket and shielding, the silver webbing. Under the shield will be another very small wire in a white jacket. that is the anntenae wire. strip about 2" of the white wire out of the shield jacket. do not strip off the white jacket. no need too. use the same clip to clip wire to top of RC. just make sure the white jacket end is folded in under the clip. It'll read just fine.

that looks like a great place to hunt - that weight is a 2lb scuba weight - I have them from 1lb to 10lb - when I went to St Crix in the 90's I took my Nautilus and a whites PI 2000 - Turned out the Nautilus Rebel was designed to only work in Florida, so it was a good thing I took the PI - I spent two days trying to remove what looked like a treasure chest from the board encased in coral it was stuck to, no joy - I did bring a large pin for tying ropes to for the sails on a mast and halve of large wedge used for cutting/shaving planks - I believe there were four large anchors in the area - I was there around 6 months after Hugo hit them -

If you are still there, you can strip off about an inch and a half of the outer sheathing, shielding and insulation, leaving just the thin core exposed. Yes, it will not be waterproof, but they are inherently NOT waterproof as complaints of the inner shielding discoloring is abundant. Just use as is, clipping the exposed core under the top clip as normal and you will be good to go. I have cut my original antenna down three times, and created a just right length with no wrapping around the shaft. Good Luck!!

The antenna wire doesn’t even need to touch the control box. It sends a radio signal to the box. I simply drilled a hole through the control box’s shaft mount. I have the antenna going up through the shaft, and just poking out of the hole. So, the tip of the antenna is behind the box and not touching it. I don’t have wired headphones (I use wireless ones), so I don’t submerge the box. So, I couldn’t tell you if my setup will still work with the controller under water. The antenna wire and the control box can still communicate, through water up to a certain distance. I know, without the antenna wire, the coil can go about 2-4 inches under water, and still transmit to the headphones. As long as the antenna wire and the controller are above water, there definitely shouldn’t be any issue.

Hi, this is the pice of wire, you lose just pice of plastic which not affect signal transmit via metal core of wire, you can use it easy as it is, just fix the remaining wire in same place. if you are afraid just put drop of any watertide glue on the end of wire to seal it, but as I mentioned it will work fine like it is. Enjoy, Go hunt!!! P.S. I read comments below, You dont need to strip the wire, it will work like it is!! To make it same size with plastic you loose just make smal loop one or to times to reach same thiknes of broken part and secure it the same way as before. Good luck!

I make my own antenna wires all you have to do is strip back about an inch of the outer wire leaving the center wire . I use e6000 glue to seal everything then put heat shrink tubing over it. All you need is that stripped back part of wire in place where the part that broke off was.

Love T&C. Was there as a captain for Sail Provo gawd..... nearly 20 years ago now. Those guys still there and can recommend a snorkelling day out with them. Would have a detect at Club Med if that still exists..... lots of drunk young adults cavorting on the beach!! Have a great trip

Here's the fix for the broken wire, credit to Gigmaster. Just strip the insulation off the wire where it broke, wrap it in the best tape you can find where electric tape would be best. Then zip tie or twist tie the wire at the same spot on the top of the controller, and you'll be back in business. kzread.info/dash/bejne/jGeOssydh5CnfsY.html

Superglue worked when my control box mount broke. Still OK after a month! It needs the liquid superglue not the gel. Hold in place for 3 minutes use only enough glue to wet both surfaces!! Buy the best superglue not a cheap one! 👍

Hang in there! That wire, the connection issues with the coil, and charging the coil separately made me buy the Manticore. As I've said in the past XP needs a beach/dive version that a standard wired coil can be connected to for subsurface operations. Reliability in the field is important. Maybe Nokta can overnight you a Legend! Have fun down there! 🏖️🧲(((💍💍🌊

That's truly a bummer 😔 I've never had any issues with my Nokta Legend with the AquaTek headphones. I wouldn't take any other machine with me, IMHO

Dive belt weight, lol. Yeah, I would detect and smash that place as often as possible. You can secure the wire anywhere near the pod. If you go to consolidated electrical distributors they will sell you a spool of the identical wire. You can electrical tape it to the coil and it will work as a temporary fix or permanent upgrade lol from the poorly engineered original. ATB
