LOVE Evanescence, fronted by Amy Lee! Her voice has power and resonance with so much emotional energy. You had heard “Bring Me to Life” before-and, that male backup voice you had heard was from a Christian Rock vocalist. The producers from the record label had insisted a male voice be added to the song because they did not believe a female-fronted band would sell albums or get air-play-because the producers were sexist d*cks. Amy Lee has regretted going along with that addition for years since, so much so that she later re-recorded that song without the male vocals, because her voice is more than enough for her work. Oh yeah... And, she’s also playing that piano-because the girl has mad skills!

I am a 62 year old heavy metal music fan myself....an ex-football player...6'6" 350 lb. Offensive Lineman back in college....and Amy Lee brings tears to my eyes when she sings this song. I guess because two of my siblings have lost children that were only 20 years old...it hits me because I was so close to both of them....and it's hard to see my siblings in so much pain for so long.

The song is from the perspective of the dude at the piano (Ben Moody, the guy who wrote the song.) His girl is dead (possibly from suicide) and he's unable to move on. The singer (Amy Lee) is playing the ghost of the dead girl, and she's singing the thoughts of the man she left behind when she died. The song is called, "My Immortal" because she can never age or change, and will always remain, in his mind, as she was when she died...thus, she is forever immortal. It was inspired by the grief that Moody experienced when his grandfather died.

Evanescence (evan essence) is an orchestral rock band, these types of bands typically have a bit of a gothic feel to their music. Amy Lee's, at least in a lot of her earlier works, were a bit darker than most. At least in her lyrics. Usually because the topics she wrote about were about personal struggles or tragedies, such as the death of her sister. And they are and continue to be very relatable for a lot of people young and old. Other bands that would typically fall into this category are Nightwish, Within Temptation, We Are the Fallen, and Epica.

The song you're thinking of is called "Bring me to life." It's from the same album as this song, Fallen, from 2003. :D

You're right you remember listening to their first single "Bring Me To Life" ft. Paul McCoy (from 12 Stones) they have so many great songs... I would totally recommend you to check out their heavier songs like Sweet Sacrifice, Everybody's Fool, Going Under, Whisper or Made of Stone. Those are good Examples of what they can do as a band.
