I couldn't really argue with DKR being better on paper, and yet I have spent MAAAAANY more hours with friends in Mario Tennis or Mario Kart. DKR was a game that I feel you could best appreciate in Single Player Mode. There just wasn't the same addiction factor as with other party games on the N64, at least not in my peer group. Anybody that I showed the game to wasn't really that keen on coming back to it, whereas the same people were always up for a round of Mario Kart, Tennis, or Party. Maybe it was just a little too complex.

Metacritic is just a review aggregate site, there isn't much to trust or distrust. They just collate reviews from all over. There is debate about weighted reviews but yea, might as well blame all the individual reviewers who gave these games those high scores. Which, you have to keep in mind were mostly given at the time of the games' releases.

@@n64glennplant i can't speak for berserkism.... but I definitely preferred the N64 version. I enjoyed the improved visuals and entertaining janky voice acting of the PS2 version. But I had a much easier time controlling the game on the N64 than PS2. For whatever reason I was godly at headshots on the N64 version but not not the PS2.

@@n64glennplant I am not really one for remakes, HD versions or port upgrades, so some small tweaks here and there to controls and graphics didn't detract from the original appeal of the N64 version. For me, it was a game that had a lot of influence because of it's systems. Laser sight, cover system, move, cover, shoot, duck style of play was a puzzle game inside of the overall game and it was easy to really get into the zone when playing it. There are a lot of games that can go into a top 10, I felt it was owed a spot.

Funny how the fun factor of “going through rings” in games can differ…. Looking at u wave race and superman!

Waverace 64 is a masterpiece and deserves to be higher than #8

I don't disagree all that much with this list. I do think its a tragedy that Mario Kart 64 is not on the list. I think that beats wave race. Then I would put Starfox 64 in place of mario tennis. I do love that Perfect Dark is getting its due recognition. I have seen too many "Top N64 games" lists in which Goldeneye is ahead of Perfect Dark or Perfect Dark is not even on the list... Perfect Dark is better than Goldeneye in every way (and Im a huge James Bond fan). If I were to let nostalgia come into play, I would have loved to see Turok or Turok 2 make this list. They were top 10 games to me.

Mario Kart 64 was good, but felt exprimental in that you can cheese an opponent in a race by using items before a ramp and add 10-20 seconds to their time. Waverace, F-Zero, Beetle Adventure Racing all felt like more polished racing games, IMO. Also I liked Diddy Kong Racing, but hated the collecting enough stuff to unlock courses.

Everytime i was watching somebody playing Ocarina of Time they were at the Water Temple and i was puzzling with them to get through. When i played Ocarina of Time YEARS later, it was the easiest one for me haha Fun Fact, i don't know why, maybe because i watched so many People playing it, but when i borrowed the Game from my Cousin, i was only going fishing for two Weeks haha...

With the N64 often I find it has to be a top 25, but if the intent is minimalism, my top 5: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time ( Replayability, 3D Action Adventure RPG, Timeless Coming of Age Story) Perfect Dark (Co-Op, Counter Op, Combat Simulator) Rush 2049 (Variety, Ease of Play/ Challenging to Master, Head to Head Races) Donkey Kong 64 (Endless Adventure, Various Game Modes, Multi Play) Ogre Battle 64 (Replayabilty, Countless Hours, Tactical Strategy RPG) Honorable Mentions: Flying Dragon, Sin and Punishment, Goemon's Great Adventure, and any Mario Themed Game.. First game that came with my N64, Starfox 64.... the above would be the games I would add on. Most Mario games, often you would play at a party, and the obscure titles, I didn't even learn of until college... I think that is the charm of the N64. And really, you can't do a top 5 or a top 10, especially if you want to consider all genres.

One thing you do have to keep in mind regarding meta critic is the timing of releases… Wave Race for instance, came out in 1996 and was so revolutionary, you can understand why it had such a high rating compared to potentially better games that released 2 - 4 years later. If it came out in 1999 or 2000, it would likely have scored a little lower and not made the top 10.

That's a pretty damn good list. It's so close my personal as well.

My most played N64 games as a kid were banjo kazooie, goldeneye, mario kart, super mario 64, star fox64, majoras mask and my personal favorite ocarina of time. I'm not surprised most of them made the top 10 metacritic lists. Great video as always glenn.

A little unrelated but I remember back in Mexico in my grandparents home, summer and hot as hell, like heat stroke inducing heat. Having the AC all the way up while comfy AF under a big comforter and with my brother and cousin playing body harvest, Diddy Kong, RE 2 and Zelda on the n64 back in 99 or 2000. Man nothing will ever beat that feeling. I feel like things like these are what makes us keep going back to these ugly ass, but fun games. We were so happy and we didn't know it. Thank you for this channel 🙏. It triggers a lot of good memories and it's nice to hear a nice person talk about all my fav games from back then.

Perfect Dark has been really helping me through lockdown, and I'm not even all that good at FPS games. It's just so slick while still charming, not to mention some very hilarious correct predictions of the future... though everyone having british accents in the game is still kinda goofy.😆

I believe it has to do with the timing too. Waverace was one of the first n64 games, therefore, it had a much bigger impact than it would have if it came out the same time conkers bad fur day did

Oh man that game was and is absolutely amazing. Regardless of how long ago I beat it I still remember how great it was. I would throw money at Nintendo if they remade or at least re-release it on the switch.

Mario Tennis is only that high, because it's Waluigi's debut game. : )

I don’t know why majoras mask under sold to OOT. Majoras mask has been my favorite game since I first finished it. It’s so beautiful and really pulled at the heart strings. The collecting of the masks too was always so fun for me! Great video dude! I’m so glad you’re back!!

I think the only thing that hurt the game was basically being a "director's cut" of Castlevania 64 released way too soon after that title. Either it needed to wait or should have been the game we got in the first place.

My top 10 list of N64 games.. 1: Super Mario 64 2: Goldeneye 007 3: The Legend of Zelda: OOT 4: Perfect Dark 5: Starfox 64 (Lylat Wars) 6: Banjo-Kazooie 7: Diddy Kong Racing 8: Conker’s Bad Fur Day 9: Mario Kart 64 10: Jet Force Gemini I was close to placing either Donkey Kong 64, Majora’s Mask or Banjo Tooie at No. 10, but I feel they are too similar to games that are already on this list. Jet Force Gemini is very much a unique title and is criminally underrated.

I remember that all expansion packs instantly sold out when Majoras Mask was released. So game was not "available" for many players, and simultaniously all focus was on PS2 release anyway. -These games come to my mind right now: The Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time, Perfect Dark, F-Zero X, Super Mario 64, Goldeneye 007, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Jet Force Gemini, StarFox 64, Turok 2, Diddy Kong Racing. - But i could easily name 10-20 more N64 games that are equally just as good. That list would include fantastic titles like Mystical Ninja and Mischief Makes.

100% agree that Conker deserves a higher rank than #9. You hit the nail on the head saying it was "a pure product of its time," but that is precisely why it worked so well. Side note: at university, a buddy wanted to give me a bottle of the scotch and asked what I wanted. I told him to get me Speyside, because that's what Conker drinks at the end of the game. Even in my 20s, that game stuck with me. Cheers, Glenn!

My top ten: 10 Ogre Battle 64- Amazing game. Tactical RPG with tons of team customisation and deep gameplay. Can be slow but once you get over that its incredible 9. Conkers Bad Fur Day- Funniest game i’ve ever played. Nothing like it. Also has a crap ton of variety from pushing poo up a mountain to fighting Nazi Teddy bears. 8.F-Zero X- exhilarating, fast and smooth. The sense of speed and the that it gives you is incredible. 7 Diddy Kong Racing- Single player adventure mode is genius. Incredible track design. Colourful art style that has aged well and incredible music by David Wise. 6. Star Fox 64- Amazing replay ability. Third person rail shooters are incredibly underrated. The roller coaster and space battle feel just makes it so good. 5. Sin and Punishment- Another third person rail shooter and hidden gem. It’s only an hour long but there is so much packed in that one hour it has infinite replay value. 4. Super Smash Bros- There are better Smash Bros sequels with more content. But this was a blast back in the day. Still has the best sound effects. 3. Mario Kart 64- The multiplayer is still fun. The best to play with friends. 2. Goldeneye 007- So many good memories with this. 1. Perfect Dark- Holy cow this game as so much conten. Would spend all night with my brother versing bots or each other in the multiplayer.

Shadowman deserves a spot on the top 10. I absolutely loved it, the music, atmosphere, story and design. It was simply a hidden masterpiece that any platformer or horror fan would love. The remaster just released so there's no excuse for people not to play it. It's a game everyone needs to play once in their life.

Great video. Really makes me think. I'd have to take some time to fill out a proper list, but one game I'd have on there for sure is 1080 Snowboarding. I feel it is perhaps the N64 game that has aged the best. It still looks great and feels as amazing to play as it did back then. I re-visit it quite often.

Wave Race 64 absolutely deserves to be in the top 10 all time N64 games. In fact, for me it’s #1. It perfectly nailed what it set out to do, and to this day no other water racing game has ever been as good.

The reason why "Majora's Mask" didn't sell as much as "Ocarina of Time" isn't much of a mystery: The game was released literally the same week as the PlayStation 2. The N64 as a whole was pretty much done from a sales perspective. Also, the 3 day cycle was considered as way too intimidating and stressful by many people, which didn't help.

Hey Mario Tennis is a damn good game! A little overly simplistic maybe, but very fun. My top 10 would go something like this, in no particular order: Zelda OoT, Majora's Mask, Mario 64, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart, Banjo Kazooie, Star Fox, Smash Bros, and WWF No Mercy.

Yeah mario tennis is fun but imho defo not in the top 10 best on the console

This just reminds me how fantastic the N64 library was and how great Rare used to be. Some of these games really deserve their legendary status. Personally, I probably would have taken Goldeneye off the list and replaced it with Turok 2. Goldeneye was a brilliant game and I played it to death when it was released, but it was surpassed in every way by later FPS' on the console, particularly Perfect Dark. I also notice a disturbing lack of Diddy Kong Racing on the list. How Mario Tennis got on there but not the best Kart racing game of the era I'll never know.

I can tell you why I didn’t buy Majora’s Mask despite falling in love with Ocarina of Time (my first Zelda game). I rented MM from Blockbuster and found the Groundhog Day mechanic (the world resets every three days) incredibly frustrating. I was too young (9 or 10 years old) to figure out how to work around it on my own (save your money in the bank, play the Song of Time backwards to slow down time) , and I didn’t have the savvy to look for help online. So I returned it to Blockbuster and never played it again until 11 or 12 years later when I borrowed a roommate’s N64 cartridge and realized what I missed. OoT is much more forgiving to young and inexperienced gamers due to its lack of a literal ticking clock. No time pressure means you can explore freely without consequence.

Absolute joy to watch this. So many great games. Never had a N64 growing up however I remember seeing the old adverts/magazine reviews (especially games master) and local video shops for many of these. Maybe one day,I’ll get round into trying them! Only one can wish haha! Adult life! Glad to see you back Glenn!

Thanks Chris! I always loved reading the old mags especially n64 magazine which was my fav. Was lucky enough to own and play so many games as my local indie game shop was mustard when it came to trade ins and often they’d only charge like £5 for a swap fee

you know its crazy, i am from this era and had an n64 but i have never played ocarina. i see it everywhere when im surfing for nostalgia so much so that the music of the game can make me cry. anyways, i had 2 sessions of n64, its release and college and the big title i didnt see on this list that i absolutely loved was mario kart 64 it was great at release and held up even more when we started playing it at school. that should stand for something. anyways enjoyed the vid

You really need to get OOT ticked off your games you’ve played list - it’s superb!

This is the first time i’ve ever disagreed with you. Mario Tennis awesome. What I love is that a non gamer can pick this up and play well in a relatively short period of time. It has depth too. One of the best party games ever.

Majoras Mask didn’t sell nearly as well as Ocarina of Time simply because it came out late in 2000 during the launch of the PS2 and the Dreamcast already being out. Just like Conkers, if it came out in 98-99, it would have sold multiple times more.

My personal top 10 Goldeneye 007 Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Banjo-Kazooie Conkers Bad Fur Day Perfect Dark Super Mario 64 Diddy Kong Racing/Mario Kart(tie) Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask Paper Mario Turok 2: Seeds of Evil There are many more I couldn't fit on this list as well.

Winback 64 was one of my all time favorites!! Or Turok.

interesting to see so many multiplayer games on the list

So many games could fit this list, such awesome titles on the N64. I personally think WaveRace 64 deserves its place, those controls were sublime. You could choose to ride the wave or cut through it, or both and those water physics in play have never been bettered. Additions... Turok 2, Star fox/ Lylat wars, Shadowman, KI Gold, SW Rogue Squadron, Beetle Adventure Racing, F Zero X, Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64, Zelda Majora's Mask (better than oot!? 😱😁) Well that's 10 already lol it's not enough! Cos I'm weird I'll throw in Mystical Ninja starring Goemon and Mace the dark age, Forsaken and Mischief Makers aka go go troublemakers. Great video mate 👍 😎 AncientGamer 🎮

This video had some genuine laugh out loud one liners Glenn! My list would have to include f-zero x, Smash Bros and Lylat Wars, all of which I played to death in multiplayer with friends and family. Good times

While the top 3 in my list are set in stone, a lot of the others can vary, but my top 10 are as follows: 1. WWF No Mercy 2. Super Smash Bros. 3. Perfect Dark 4. Quake II 5. The World is Not Enough 6. Mario Tennis 7. Gauntlet Legends 8. Goldeneye 9. Road Rash 64 10. Excitebike 64 If I had to pick a number 11, it would be The New Tetris.

I love F-Zero X... the game got panned in some reviews because of the soundtrack, someone said something like "there will be no time were people will enjoy this kind of music", its just a so dumb reason, i can get the graphics being simple, but the music pumps adrenaline and works so well with the game, better than GX's music in my opinion. F-Zero X with the Expansion Pack for me would be in the top 10.

That soundtrack is so rad! Have to take a few points off for the Rainbow Road remix being cut (cartridge limitations) and for the soundtrack being too heavy on MIDI instruments overall (shoestring budget?), but I do prefer the style to GX's more techno-oriented approach.

I remember picking up Wave Race along with my N64 from Dixons, being so disappointed with it and returning it the next day, which I'm surprised they took back. I then had a brand new N64 with no games until Mario Kart 64 was released the following week. It was the longest week of my life.

I remember one time I took back a gamecube football game, think it was a Sega one and they accepted it. I too was surprised as they were always brats weren't they when it came to returning stuff

PAL Waverace 64 is an atrocious game. The conversion was so bad it actually broke the game - it shouldn't have been released like that. It's great when it runs at the proper speed in the US or JP versions. MK64 got butchered too to be honest but it's still playable. But I thought MK64 was such a disappointment and it's my least favourite in the series by some way.

@@davy_K Luckily I never knew of the pal/ntsc differences in speed until I was much older; so didn't feel like I was missing out. Although MK64 isn't the best game in the series, I have so many years of memories and had so much fun with it at the time.

@@JimbQ That's a great point. I didn't realise the differences myself until I got a Dreamcast and experienced 60Hz mode.... The fun and the memories matter more. :) I loved original MK so much that I was bound to be disappointed. MK64 did feel a bit slow to me though on certain tracks. But I know most people love MK64 and it may be the most fondly thought of. It has some brilliantly designed tracks. I really liked Double Dash on GC though - I'm probably in a minority on that one!!!!

I didn't put a lot of thought into this list but off the top of my head I think my top 10 would look like this: #1 Ocarina of Time #2 Super Mario 64 #3 Majora's Mask #4 Super Smash Bros. 64 #5 Banjo Kazooie #6 Mario Kart 64 #7 Custom Robo #8 Sin and Punishment #9 Conker's BFD #10 Lylat Wars/Star Fox 64 I reallly think 7 & 8 would have been big hits if they were released internationally.

That's a good top 10. I remember being really upset when Sin and Punishment's wordwide release was cancelled as I was really hyped for it. Thankfully, they (kind of) rectified their mistake by putting it on the Wii Virtual Console and then also releasing the sequel in the West.

I know it has it flaws, but I always had 1080 as one of my favourite N64 games. It was fantastic

The required expansion pak was the reason I couldn't play Majora's Mask as a child, so you were spot on as far as I'm concerned.

The SNES and N64 were my entire childhood. My personal favorites were Star Fox 64, Pokémon Snap, and Diddy Kong Racing. I also think one of the most underrated N64 games was Ducks Dodgers.

Personal Top 10: 1. Zelda OOT 2. Banjo Kazooie 3. Mario Kart 64 4. Perfect Dark 5. Mario 64 6. Beetle Adventure Racing 7. Zelda MM 8. Quake II 9. Resident Evil 2 10. Star Wars Rogue Squadron So hard to boil it down to 10. Lot of great games that I adore just missing the cut (Goldeneye, Lylatwars, F-Zero X etc)

I think the hardest part of anyone’s top 10 is thinking which games will have to be cut

Today I found my OLD N64 I had as a very young kid. It was in my mom's basement. xD And I had recently bought another n64 months ago. I have been watching your channel for a while for game recommendations. If I were to talk about my fav games, I would talk about my fav games from childhood memory (& not my collection atm). Fav Childhood N64 Games: 1. Mario Party 2 2. Yoshi Story 3. Super Mario 64 (my favorite today) 4. Pokemon Stadium 4. Tom and Jerry in Fists of Furry 5. Donkey Kong 64 6. F-Zero X 7. Zelda Ocarina of Time 8. Pokémon Puzzle League Donkey Kong 64 & F-Zero X are low on the list, because I would play them at the Dentist (they had an N64 setup/still do). I remember playing Mario Party 2 and liking it a lot at a friend's house. Super Mario 64 -- I would play the first two levels, but I don't remember getting far... I recently replayed and beat it as an adult. I was too dumb to beat it as a kid. I felt Super Mario 64 was very enjoyable. It's too bad I don't see too much replay value after beating it. Only once in a while. Tom and Jerry in Fists of Furry was fun for a while, but I remember getting bored of it. Zelda Ocarine of Time, I never really owned a copy as a kid. I watched my cousin play the first level -- but it's low on my list because I never had personal time with the game to make it very meaningful. When I play Zelda Ocarina of Time today, it's a scary game for me! The boss battles & certain parts in the game make me feel scared even as an adult. I can't imagine how scared I would be as a kid. But I'm impressed with the boss battles in the game & how big they are. And I have yet to really delve into Majora's Mask, so who knows... You should make a 5 SCARY N64 games list! (on top of that!) I was very young when I played the n64. Single digit. Of course, other games I liked outside the system were Pikmen & Timesplitters 2 / Future Perfect, but n64 games have a very special place in my heart as childhood games.

Good Video mate. I never owned a Nintendo 64 but it's great looking back at all these games. I am waiting for Nintendo to announce a Nintendo 64 mini classic even though that is either some ways off or will never happen. I have the exact same feeling about OOT a warmth comes over me and only with the original N64 version. I still play it when I stop by my parents around the holidays.

Nothing connected my family more than Nintendo. The best times as a child for me, is seeing my mother beating Smb. Later in life, while waiting on her gamo treatments Playing the hotel's console with my father. My wife and I packed it away to keep the tradition going. Also,my mom likes hearing my wife lose in Hungarian after mario cart..Thank you for the inspiration to write this. I apologize for the grammar. I'm so happy Wave Race 64 made the list, as it deserves to be on this list. It's a game that I coming back to other than Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64 at that time, and I fell in love with its music too and still am in love with it to today. I'm hoping Nintendo gets their stuff together to bring N64 games back in some way in form, like either an N64 mini or on the Switch online service. I also give high nods to Banjo Kazooie and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

@@n64glennplant So do I, especially during times where I really need to unwind. Funny thing is that at one point my fiancee wanted me to sell my Pilotwings 64 game because the game didn't appeal to her based on the characters and or graphics. It was a very dumb reason. Needless to say, i still have the game to this day.😊

I took a look at the wider Metacritic N64 list. Surprised to see SSB all the way at 40 with a 79 average. Sure, later games in the series have eclipsed it, but it seems like it should be in the top 20 at least.

Wave Race 64 deserves that spot. I'd put it a lot higher, even. It aged amazingly well, in fact no water based racer has surpassed it's gameplay to date, it's sequel included.

Nothing will ever top Ocarina of Time. That game is more than a game. Right now I wish I could just go back to 1998 as a carefree child and relive OoT.

I am amazed by the huge distance we can estimate, between you, and the 2nd best expert of the N64 on Earth.

I don’t mind it, more of an added challenge but I don’t play the regular OOT often enough to become complacent with it so I don’t really have a need to play master quest

Given the limited amount of N64 games I've beaten, which is really only 11 lol. 10. Star Fox 64 9. Super Smash Bros. 8. WCW/nWo: Revenge 7. Mario Kart 64 6. Mario Party 5. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4. DOOM 64 3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2. Super Mario 64 1. Banjo-Kazooie Number 11 would be Banjo-Tooie. I've never beaten Conker, Goldeneye, or Perfect Dark!! T-T I'm curious to know your personal top 10 N64 list!

Great content as always Glenn! Really enjoyed this video. The metacritic list does throw up some interesting curve balls. I can't argue with most of it, including OOT at number 1 (although Windwaker is my fave Zelda of all time 🤔). For me I'd have to have Rogue Squadron and WWF No Mercy in there. For me they are 2 titles that I still play regularly and that really hold up well in terms of gameplay in my opinion. Indeed I've never been able to find a Wrestling game that comes anywhere near No Mercy for fun
