The Met Gala is approaching in big steps and like every year, there is a lot of speculation around the interpretation of the theme and the guestlist. Furthermore, there are already quite of few indicators for some controversy and drama at this year’s “biggest night in fashion” themed “The Garden of Time”. In this video, I explain what the Met Gala actually is about, who gets to attend, why Anna Wintour is so important for it and what outfits we can expect to see this year given the theme and the Costume Institute’s blockbuster exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”.

As I recall, the only one who got the "Gilt Age" correct was Blake Lively wearing Donatella Versace's absolutely inspirational, transformational gown. What a knock-out!

@@PinkLookbook Totally!!!! I also couldn’t see that in person but would’ve waited in line for it had it been possible. That show had it been possible I think would have traveled well if they wanted to go on tour to other museums, but I’m sure they didn’t want to let any of the pieces out of the museum because most museums don’t have a costume department I’m sure some have specialties in textiles, but they would’ve probably had to send staff with it so it was probably not conducive for the show to tour…. But that would’ve been amazing.

@@angelicaravenhilt661 I agree. I recently saw the Chanel exhibition which travelled from Paris to Australia, Tokyo and London. But I think you are right, it depends on the partner museums and their focus and institutes. I saw a documentary about China through the Looking Glass, that one looked great too

The Met Gala is in decline because of reputation, the overall popularity is becoming mainstream. KK destroyed the Marilyn Monroe dress and well as the Met reputation. People dont go there for the theme and the quality of people who attend is in decline.

The lagerfield theme was awful. It looked like Wintour wanted to support it because it was a sell to corporations. Nothing is more corporate than lagerfield. The Marilyn dress was a terrible disaster, it did not even relate to the lagerfield theme. As for Anna Wintour, I think it’s time to retire. Time for someone who cares about the craft industries that went into making these garments.

@@PinkLookbook They need to get with the theme, a lot of social media is starting to look at what they do. Just flogging brands and junk we don’t need, is not doing so well. Some influencers are making there own outfits and doing a great job on their creations. The purpose of the Met Museum is to take care of garments made by ordinary folk. I wonder do these celebrities realise that the bread and butter of what they do is the people who buy the junk they sell we don’t need. Time for change.

@@Sewingtrue100 I would love to see more independent labels and designers but, unfortunately, I guess it is about money after all and that’s why viewers are flooded with the big brands and ads. I found it ironic - many of the designers celebrated in this year’s exhibition would probably never have been able to buy a ticket to the Met Gala to promote their garments
