When you need a good anchor to stop it blowing over never neglect the value of a big battery, even a lead acid battery. You could also take gaffer tape and use a local big rock.

Just need a solar panel and you could sneak one of those into a tree up there. Any idea what sort of size panel you would need?

Not sure on the solar panel I would need, I will speak to a good friend of mine who is in the business, and take his advice, thanks for watching and the comment, much appreciated👍

I just finished coupling my my heltec v3 with a solar panel from a solar outdoor spotlight... solar panel 1w/5.5v and 2 3.7v 1200mah batteries and it works. Yes maybe not ideal but it works.

Thanks in case I have to make an antenna because I just got a gateway in today and the antenna I ordered hasn’t shown up yet. Probably need to look up the frequency for 915 because you’re on 866 if I remember correctly

You are welcome, I’m just a guy trying to understand more about radio and communications, I get a buzz from making antennas for the VHF, UHF and UUHF bands, the biggest buzz is the contacts when I make them. Nothing like it in radio the “I made this” feeling when you get a conversation or a confirmation. Brilliant! I hope you enjoy the mesh. 👍

@@RADIO_DAZE I’m a retired Air Force communications technician and I was an amateur radio operator for about 30 years. I’ve done some of this, but I haven’t really been playing around in a couple of decades. I used to do things like packet back in the 90s so I’ve been on other wireless data networks. I’ve also worked with the American Red Cross, so I know a thing about disaster and if I learned that this is valuable, I will try to say something to them at least online. I took our public address system at McConnell Air Force Base and made an interface so that we could use it to play reveille retreat and tabs along with we could’ve made automated messages. We got paid for it, but they didn’t implement it and it could’ve been used in Hawaii to save lives.

Thanks for the interesting video.... How do you get the signal strength bar of other nodes visible?

  • @RADIO_DAZE

On the IPad or IPhone if you look at the node list, tap the node you wish to see the signal from and it pops up on screen.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if your node shows up on the mesh map that means you're connected to the Meshtastic MQTT server and when texting others on the public channel you're really communicating across the internet. That defeats the purpose of the radio device, doesn't it?

No, you are mistaken, if you turn off MQTT and run on RF only you are only working the airwaves and then therefore the users who are on RF and meshed together. We advise people to turn off the MQTT server so as not to flood the mesh either the internet linked chat. Hope that helps, give it a try you may like it. If you are a radio guy, then it is QRP ( very low power level ) working and some rather large distance has been achieved via the offline mesh. 👍
