    It is indeed Worksop radio club. Big into radio as you know Graham, also trying to get people interested in the hobby. Got to give G3RCW a plug, hopefully gain a few visitors and possibly members. All helps to keep the club alive👍

    Hi. My two cents for the putting the center conductor to the top when vertical. This way it maybe coupling to the ground better. I could imagine that you get a boost from the signal that bounces off the ground that way. HF vertical were explained to me that way. Cheers for the video. 73 de M/DL1FAB/m Node: FABm and FABp

    I just bought a few devices and I think I have the software working correctly on a couple of them, but there’s no one around me here in the North Central Pennsylvania, United States. That’s one thing about having a big country and a lot of rural area, you may not find anyone around you doing the same thing.

    @@RADIO_DAZE I just dropped my license after having it for 30 years KC5ENC. The FCC wasn’t taking care of my records, correctly, so when I tried to re-file the number associated with the license was deleted and instead of arguing I just let it go. I’ve also filed complaints with them about Starlink, that they never answered, so it’s not really unexpected. This will be a good alternative.

    i used the antenna for over a week in vertical plane, i also loaned one out that got some considerable use and distance. i will put the antenna up in a horizontal plane at some point shortly and soo a short video of the results, thanks for watching and for the comment.👍

    My node is not on the list (ENOT), as there is a big hill in the way down here in the east/middle of Nottingham. Might have a go at making my own antenna. Never made one at all. Would having multiple up-pointing elements and multiple ground-pointing elements make it a 'better' antenna, so sort of multiple di-poles wired to the same bit of coax?

    Newbie question. Why is the insulation left on the red and black cables? Would have thought it would insulate the copper from the incoming signal?

    the plastic sheathing should not cause a problem, many antennas, including some shop bought ones have a coating on them, this build was a test build and it worked very well picking up over 175 nodes.

  • @adammoss5284

    @adammoss5284

    It’s fine but if you use solid mains copper cable with the insulation took off and tune it then slide the pvc back over the wires the resonant frequency drops and you need to retune however the match seemed better with the pvc on so it stays on in future 👍🏻

    @@RADIO_DAZE a dipole antenna has a gain of 2.15 dBi. Since this is a mesh protocol, all you need are nodes along the path. Even with the cheap $1 antenna I see 50+ nodes in a 30 mile radius. I’m using heltec v3 nodes.

    Unfortunately you left out the most important piece of the Dipole antenna. The common mode choke, even with only 100 mw this is important for two reasons 1 you will end up with standing wave nodes on the coax shield. 2 These nodes will distort the expected donut shaped radiation pattern of the dipole antenna and reduce the quoted gain. The old guy that told you to make sure that you have the centre conductor element on top and the braid conductor element on the bottom is correct in advising you to do this, but only because you have no common mode or in this case shield choke at the feed point. This antenna you have made will perform just like a broken quarter wave antenna with two radials broken off, one bent down vertical and the coax radiating at mixed angles (depending on how you route it) at node pionts progressively less the further away from the antenna. If you are going to leave out the choke, you would be better to add two more radials all bent down at around 45° and route the coax vertically down. The dipole antenna is a ballaced antenna, your coax on its own is not.

    Isn't it the case, that because this is fed with coaxial cable which terminates at the radio end with a grounded shield, that this isn't really a dipole? This is a monopole in the vacinity of a grounded wire. The grounded wire is stuck at 0V because, well, it's grounded. This means that the grounded wire can't radiate as there is no change in voltage. To make this a dipole, with two radiating elements, a balun is needed. No?
