It's amazing that with any of these warbird videos the arguments that crop up about what plane can do what & this & that. We all have our favorites from that distant past. To me, it was just the sheer volume of aircraft in the air that was mind boggling. Those times will never be again. This is a fine example of a 109 & the supercharger has a sound all its own.

this (for me) is a very beautiful and clean fighter. thin minimal-drag wings, powerful engine, reasonable performance at all but the highest altitudes, devastating armament (2X 13mm MG131 nose mounted and a 15/20mm MG151 or 30mm MK108 firing thru the hub)... beautiful.

Beautiful plane. Fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, inverted V-12 generating 1775 hp, with four 7.92mm guns. Oh, and don't forget about the 20mm autocannon firing through the propeller hub. At the time, this plane was simply astonishing.

They had initial plans to produce a number of new-build Me-109s, but the lack of surviving engines prevented this project. They have been working on a Fw190D-9 project that will use a modified Allison V12 with custom exhausts. One has been delivered to a customer, but has not flown yet. I don't know how many D-9s they plan to build.

Hi, have a book that says the spiral was to put allied gunners of their aim, "The spinner is decorated with the widely used 'Spiralschnauze' marking designed to put bomber gunners off their aim - a marking that was surprisingly effective". I also heard in a documentary that that this was so they could be identified as German aircrafts from the front. It is of cause also incredibly cool.

for the guys who dont speak german, the pilot is talking about the throttle he uses, the machine has no weapons onboard so it is about a half ton lighter . he only uses 2/3 of the max power for the take off. hope it helps :)

The reason for the painted swirl was "safety". After arming and refueling these types of aircraft for months on end it was easy to overlook the noise of a running engine. Ground crew and anyone in proximity to a spinning prop needed a visual "reference" as to whether or not there was the possibility of injury. Thus the "painted spinner".

Forget the Me 109 for a minute..I saw a Feisler Storch at an air display at Liverpool airport and with a slight headwind it could actually hover..absolutely brilliant..I also saw a Me 108(No ..not a 109) at the same show..it looked identical..but strangely fragile for a war plane.Inverted 'V' fuel injected engine...they were Sooooooo advanced.The cannon used to recoil between the pilots feet there was so little room.
@FiveCentsPlease14 жыл бұрын
P-51 pilots were instructed not to fly inverted for longer than 10 seconds because the Merlin would begin to have damage from oil starvation. So a 20+ mile flight across the Channel without oil is pure bunk. However, the radials such as the R-2800 had a reputation for ruggedness and brought pilots home after having severe damage.
@veltro7517 жыл бұрын
True. The landing gear were a problem that plagued the 109 until the end of the war. Same with the Spitfire to a certain degree. The Spit's successor, the Supermarine Spiteful used wider spaced inward retracting gear. I think maybe the final Spitfire marks did as well.
