I think it was Trey Parker and Matt Stone who said that if you decide any topic is off limits for comedy, it then makes everything else you joke about offensive. Jimmy Carr's gypsy joke was not a great joke in my opinion, but it was just that - a joke. If people don't like it, they can vote with their wallets by not seeing him perform or watching him on TV. Protesting outside his shows is fine on my books as well so long as they're not trying to get the show shut down - it's a free country so we shouldn't discourage non-violent protests and freedom of expression. I've learned a lot through speaking to protesters, or speaking to people when I've been at protests

I don't mean it for the reaction, just check a little out in personal time, he's a deep thinker when not creating edgy jokes! Oh and he's married now with a kid and says it truely changed his life. I was always brought up to believe one key rule to comedy. Either everything is ok to make jokes at, or nothing is. Anything else is bigotry. I do also know that there is a time & a place for darker comedy. Hell, when I was diagnosed with cancer when I was 20, I was telling cancer jokes to my friends, while hooked up to the chemo. The point isn't to upset. The point is to break down walls & relive some tension with a quick laugh.

Well said dude. I'm totally on the same page as you. And also, just because nothing is off limits, doesn't mean jokes have to be well received - the jokes still need to be good, you've got to know your audience, and you've got to consider the timing of such things as well. Case in point, jokes about Harvey Weinstein - James Corden's jokes about this bombed, because he's a terrible 'comedian'. Ricky Gervais had people in hysterics. So it's not necessarily the subject matter that's the issue, it's what you do with it

Jimmy is one of the best UK comedian of this era. You hear his jokes and instinctively laugh because of what he says, plus his comedic timing is impeccable. You may think for a millisecond, should I be laughing at that, but then the humour in your brain takes over, and you laugh until your sides hurt. Obviously, his comedy on TV shows is turned down a bit... but he stretches the TV restrictions to the max. Everyone who goes to see Jimmy Carr should know what they are going to see/hear.

There are two types of people who can't take a joke. Those who are offended for themselves, and those who are offended for others. Those who are offended for themselves need to take a long hard look in the mirror. Those who are offended for others need to get off of their high horses, and stop pretending they know what's best for everybody else.

I don't mind that people are "suddenly" offended by jokes. Sure, I like telling jokes to friends & we have a good laugh, but sensitive people are useful too! It's like showing a squeamish person a really gory horror film. You enjoy watching them not enjoy the movie! It's funny!

Gary Glitter was a rock star in the early 1970s, part of the Glam Rock scene. In the nineties he was busted for child porn when he took his PC in for repair. He then got prosecuted for sex offences as a tourist in Thailand, and then all the stories started to come out from when he was famous, like hanging out with Jimmy Savile. He still gets royalties from his songs when they show up in '70s compilation albums and films.
