Sandi is one of the most beloved brains in UK shows, right there along with Stephen Fry. She started off in the panel shows as what she once was, a extremely smart and brainy nerd, a lesbian who grew up a little isolated and introverted due to how she looked and her higher education. As she started doing the panel shows and tv, she started to open up and get comfortable about people, and others started to realize just how smart, likable and funny she was. So much that she took over hosting QI from Stephen Fry when he left the show that he headed for so long and became everyone's lovable mom and friend and an excellent tv personality. It's amazing to look back to the old shows to see how she used to be, and how she is now.

Connections: Yes - that is Adam Buxton who played Bill Crouse in The IT Crowd. With his school friend and comedy partner Joe Cornish, they made the Adam & Joe show on channel 4 in the late 90's which specialised in recreating scenes with overdubbed toys (some 10 years prior to Robot Chicken). Adam has gone on to several 'guest starring' roles - you may also remember him as the journalist who's head exploded in Hot Fuzz (Cornetto trilogy connection). That film also starred Jo (Cornish) who later went on to write and direct his own films, starting with Attack the Block (worth a review), starring a then unknown John Boyega in his first feature - he went on to play Finn in the later Star Wars films. Attack the Block also featured Nick Frost (Cornetto again) as well as a pre-Dr.Who Jodie Whittaker.

In 1994, Sandi Toksvig became the first lesbian to come out while in the public eye, and not by choice. She was going to be 'outed' by a tabloid, so her hand was forced in this instance. Sandi received a backlash for this that was so big, she had to go into hiding with her family after receiving death threats. In June 2020, at the age of 42, I came out as Pansexual. Sandi is my heart's delight. I've had the very great pleasure of meeting her (nearly died swooning) and your comment regarding 'the smartest person in the room' is so accurate it's uncanny. She does a quiz in her one-woman show (and in the warm-up before her TV show QI) called, 'Cleverest Person In the Room'. She asks the audience to stand up and fires 'true or false' questions to the audience until one person is standing alone as the winner. You put your hands on your head for 'true' and on your backside for 'false'. You sit down when you get one wrong. She did this in the show I went to see (May 2022) and I ended up in the final 8 standing! The winner of the quiz got a small bar of Swedish chocolate called 'Plopp'. I got a bar for overcoming selective mutism to speak to her during the show (I wrote to her via the venue beforehand about this and she was lovely about it on the night) and I still have the wrapper! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE react to QI! Beginning in 2003, it used to be hosted by Stephen Fry until Sandi took over in 2016. Sandi became the first female host of a comedy TV panel show in UK television history when she did so.

10:46 urinating into a handkerchief and putting it over your face was a genuine tactic used in WWI when both armies were using poison gas, if you were caught in a gas attack without a gas mask the urine soaked fabric would keep out about 80% of the different gases used.

A lot of UK comedians are generally exaggerated versions of themselves, usually from doing live comedy, which is why they aren't that much different to their characters. Even being on panel shows, (of which there are many), they are still acting to some degree.

Might not be one for the channel, but "Travel Man" is a series you may enjoy in your own time, which Richard Ayoade presents. It's similar to Idiot Abroad but Richard has a different celebrity guest travelling with him in each episode and it's more a straight docu series, rather than docu-comedy. I think the first ever one featured Kathy Burke and they went to Spain.
