Meshuggah - "I" | I get SLAMMED for 21 minutes straight [REACTION + REVIEW]

Ойын-сауық

I listened to this once in 2004 and remember close to nothing of it, so really it was a fresh listen for me. "I" by Meshuggah is 21 minutes of insanity. I react and review it in my usual style. I hope you enjoy!

Although the drums are mixed in the album, these are actual raw plays by the drummer. You can even see him play even more complicated ones live! Don't blame you though. Tomas is a one of a kind.

I picked up this track again after at least 10 years not listening to it, and I appreciate it so much more now than I did when it was released. In Meshuggah's catalogue, it's an absolutely timeless piece of music. As great as all their music and records are, I wish they would do more shit like this. "I" is the perfect Meshuggah song. I love all the different transitions, I love all the movements, I love that they drop that crushing four-to-the-floor section that is something they NEVER do, I love the amount of attack on the drums and Tomas abusing the fuck out of his snare, the tone, the lyrics. The closing section is fucking brutal and a perfect ending. When the vocals come in and Tomas switches the four from the hats to the china, it's fucking fantastic. It's absolutely amazing from beginning to end. By the time it's over, you can't believe the journey you've been taken on. I don't know what about the second half is bad. For me, it's top 3 in my list, right there with Dancers and Bleed. Enjoyed the video, perhaps your appreciation will grow, but for me, this is one of the best things they've ever done. I also feel like maybe if you had known the drums weren't sampled you may have appreciated it more. What Tomas did on this track was absurd. "That whole track was written and recorded just on random. Me and Fredrik would just jam on something, and when we found something that was kind of cool, he would walk into the control room. I would just record drums and it wasn't a set pattern, I would just kind of stray away from the pattern, but just keep going in that vibe. Then we had to chart everything and go bar by bar to record the guitars afterwards, because it's all just random." -Tomas Haake Best band ever.

The drums were played live on this, there is just a lot of editing/splicing sections together so that it's random in certain parts. It's the Catch 33 album that is programmed.

I had to roll with the punches for about 20 years now... I understand some of it but I am still studying. That is the greatest thing about this band. I listen to Meshuggah every day and dont get bored with it.

The transitions that you weren't a fan of are some of my favorite parts of the song. I get what you're saying though, they are "odd", that's probably why I love them. They sound strange and eerie to me, almost giving off an uncomfortable vibe. I think they really help with the atmosphere.

The second half is a mood. It's meant to put you in a trance. Hence repeated simpler riffs.

  • @fashionkiller11

I often just listen up until that more simple headbanging riff is over. Up to that point its a perfect ride, the stuff after i only consume when im i n a kind of mediative mood, where the repetitive nature of the riffs is more fitting.
