Fredrik Thordendal - Guitars
Tomas Haake - Drums
Mårten Hagström - Guitars
Dick Lövgren - Bass
Lyrics:
Clockworks
Dismantling the clockwork that makes me the cynic
Pallet, wheel and click
The properties of my indifference
Reverse-engineering what makes it tick
Dissecting the finetuned mechanism
Rack and barrel, spring and pin
Its synchronous characteristics
To kill what makes it spin
Disassemble this machinery
Re-program these eyes, undo this design
Labelled and filed, each part indexed
Broken to pieces then thoroughly burned
Deconstruction of what I am
Buried to make sure he never returns
Taken apart, defused, blueprints turned to ashes
Eradicate the last remains, remnants of the insane
Disintegration, the destruction of me now imperative
To purge myself of this condition, complete this dissolution a necessity
Break this deceitful machine
A lie, what once I was, obsolete instrument
An outmoded contraption, a malfunctioning device
That callous self now extinguished, that malignant self now disused
That conceited invention to nothing now reduced
Complete disintegration, the destruction of me now imperative
To purge myself of this condition, complete this dissolution a necessity
Break this deceitful machine

LOFL! Without a doubt!
He is very relaxed. He is actually grooving the whole time, like an R&R or jazz drummer. That is the thing that separates him from other metalist/heavy drummers. And there are lots of ghost notes and subtle accents in his dynamics. He is also a composer and lyricist as well as being a highly accomplished musician. The volient sound and extreme nature of the music tends to "hide" some of these factors. One counter-intuitive way to appreciate him, and the the band more, is to turn the volume way down and listen attentively, as an "objective observer". Later, you can "get into it" and "go crazy". Peace.

You are right, musically this band is incredible, and Tomas is the center of it all.
What I like most about him is that he isn't like most metal drummers in that all he relies on is ridiculous BPM and blast beats. He has the subtly of a jazz drummer. It is all in the offbeats and wrists.

First be able to sing the melody, then the bass line, then the chordal instrument parts. Then listen to the soloist. Once you can sing all those, listen to what Thomas does in relation to each part. It should make much more sense by then.
Unbelievable drummer, seriously so much skill and finesse at the at the same time. Makes it look like water off a ducks back
Tomas Haake is the most talented drummer in metal. Bar none.
If we're gonna call Tomas Haake a drummer, what are we gonna call all those other guys who attempt to play this instrument?

I called them Lars Ulrich
When I first saw him play, I was extremely surprised by how many ghost notes he keeps throwing in. I now think that they’re there to help him keep tempo and memorise the rhythms (he mentioned before that he sees Meshuggah as straight 4/4 but with fucked up bars). Things are starting to make more sense now. He’s still a cyborg.
This seems like it should be beyond the realm of plausibility. I feel like this shouldn't even be remotely possible. It's like most drummers keep time with whatever their dominant hand is, but I'm watching him stop tracking time with his dominant hand and temporarily shift to his off-hand - but the fucking right hand is still going away steady while the other half of his cognition is off doing something else without it. And this is all just his hands! We haven't even talked about what's going on with the kicks. Holy fuck, this shouldn't be possible.

Only 30k likes with almost 3 million views... Shows that people were unable to peel their eyes away to hit the like button the entire time this video was playing.
I noticed he never hit the big cymbal closest to the camera (far left). I was watching intently to see if he hit it, and just as the song was ending and I was giving up, he hit it RIGHT at the end 😂😂🙌🏽 Legend. I often come back to watch this video and marvel at the glory of it. It's so insane I actually don't even understand what's going on
That´s what I call intelligent drumming, I haven´t seen anything like that. The tempos are always odd and he nails them all the time, that is what amazes me, the precision, brutality and taste. That playing is inhuman!!!!!!! What I love is that he makes it look so easy, he is like playing two songs at once.

I know its great. My dad showed me stuff like Matt Cameron, Danny Carey, Bill Bruford, and Matt Garstka and now I've stumbled across this. This type of music always seems to amaze me.
Thank you Nuclear Blast & Meshuggah & Tomas Haake. This is exactly the kind of stuff real fans want to see. I don't take it for granted you guys posted this, you easily could not have but it is MUCH appreciated. We'd also love to see guitar playthroughs as well, maybe next time.
Meshuggah are modern day Vikings. Nonstop, they tour the land conquering souls with their monster metal..
Meshuggahs music has gotten me through some tough times. It's the only music I focus entirely on it's duration, repeating over and over trying to tap alongside the snares, kicks or guitars. Seriously fun music.
this guy ain't human, he is just too good. by far, the best and most versatile metal drummer today.

Ive watched this countless times. Still floors me. Such precision, such passion. Thank you for everything you’ve given meshuggah. I’ve listened to your albums almost every day without fail for the past 21 years. Sometimes i think its something to do with the roughly seven year cycle of release that makes each meshuggah album have distinct links to sections of my life. Meshuggah has never been just music to me. More like existential sonic psychotherapy. I meditate to it. I go to sleep to it. I train to it. I focus at work to it. Like an itch I must scratch daily. As a half swede you make me wish I had grown up in my mothers country. More MOoooooooRE!!!!!
Declare Thomas Haake a national treasure of every nation.
Nobody can, after seeing this, deny that cyborgs are living among us.
Im so thankful to be alive when meshuggah roamed the earth. Light years ahead of comprehensive.

Incredible. It only just occurred to me, that Haake must have insane physical endurance, akin to that of an athlete. Some shape strategic forms on field, others weave beautifully dark rhythmic structures, to inspire.
Lifetime achievement status - Drumming-wise. Highest Echelon.
He makes is looks so easy.
Before someone complains about the cam not synced with the playing in some parts, the playing is still out of this planet. Tomas (and Meshuggah) recorded this album live, so some parts do not correspond to what you see in the video (like on 1:50 where he's hitting a crash, and you're hearing a china). You're hearing the final mix of the song, so some parts were changed during the mixing process, which is totally natural. This guy is my favorite drummer, and this video is just another reason why.

This is a playthrough, this isn't what he recorded for the Violent Sleep of Reason, they didn't changed anything, he was just playing over the final track.
@Lmanijardi

I believe this is what he recorded, buddy. You can see Fredrik on the background and Dick can be seen on the previous video for Nostrum recording as well, so these are takes that went for the album. Maybe it's not the take that was chosen for the album, but he isn't playing over the final track for sure.
@gaunten

Exactly, they did several takes of the songs and then used the parts where it sounded best, but they only filmed like one or two takes. So some parts on the album might be from this specific take, and others not.

There's something awesome about the kind of tension Meshuggah brings to the table! 🤖🎶
We are truly lucky to have been alive at the same time as Tomas Haake to witness this level of mastery.
Everything you hear here was recorded in one take, EVERYTHING. That's how good a drummer Tomas is, he doesn't need a band - he just plays and the universe answers back!
Can I point out that the riffage is actually the sickest part in this. Thomas follows those insanely tuned and timed guitar-bass phrases and of course makes the whole thing bond and feel like a waterfall of steel pouring down on you. His technical ability of course is jaw-dropping. But it begins with the riffs.

I think it depends on the song too. For example, for me as well, here it starts with the riff. But in a song like say demiurge I think it's the drum groove that the riff sits on top of

yep, you nailed it. he's just creating around the riffs. hell i thought that's how ALL music progressed through times... LOL Guess that's just the guitarist in me. I have helped MANY drummers become WAY better drummers by teaching them a little theory and structure, but MOST important...??? teach em how to tune a guitar, THEN teach em how to tune their drums... you will see MANY lights come on after THAT session!!!
