The Meross MSG100 Smart Garage Door Opener is a smart home device that allows you to control an existing garage door with this small addition. It takes some wiring and a little bit of know-how, but in general, this home automation device is easy to operate and use.
Through this how-to home automation video, I show you a number of things. The MSG100 is unboxed, and then I show you what each component does and means to your set up. From there, I show you a full connection process and a set up process. You'll be able to setup this smart garage door opener in your home and have it working fully.
Future videos and articles will show the Meross Smart WiFi Garage Door Opener connected to IFTTT, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa. For now, you can use your phone to open and close your Garage door.

Update a year later... the Meross support FAQ now says you set the assistants (Google, Alexa) to require a voice PIN when a user is asking to open the garage door. The Meross garage device is seen as a lock, not a switch. I’m not sure if you would then also require the voice PIN for closing. In the Meross app, you can choose the option to require a PIN for opening. And then, also choose to require the same PIN for closing. I’m not sure if the Meross app PIN and the Google/Alexa PINs are related.

Hi and thank you for this great video. I have since watching this purchased this product and have installed it in my home. Both me and my wife have however found out that even though the opener have its own sensor for knowing if the garage door is open this sensor can not be trusted atleast not with google home assistant. I have integrated the device with my google home assistant and if you issue the open voice command you will get a pin code challange. However if you close the garage door you do not get the pin code challange and the garage door closes. Unfortunately alot of times you can also use the close voice command to open the garage door. If you have google home assistant active in your home someone could shout from outside " Hey google! Close garage " and gain access unchallanged.

Hi Brian! I've got a terminal block on the circuit board of my garage door module with "PWR, PE, PE-, GND, OSC, AUX" inscribed under it. Do I screw in the signal control wires in any of these terminals? Can't see any other locations on the circuit board to attach the signal control cables to. Massively confused.

  • @AutomateYourLife

    @AutomateYourLife

    3 жыл бұрын

Pretty hard for me to support this. I can't see the install and even if I could, I can't see the wires. So you're going to have to know your own garage door system here, but what I can tell you is that the Meross is just closing the circuit and allowing (if I remember correctly) 5V to be applied to the circuit. If your existing push button in your garage goes into any terminal blocks that you can see, that's where I'd start. That's the circuit that closes when you push the button. But understand that garage door openers have different electrical requirements, so you need to understand that before you just go wiring something in.

  • @Bill_Woo

Great stuff. I wonder if there would be a way to "split" the sensing and run a wire to a second garage door - and/or another wire to the door into the residence. That way even though the controller only manages one door opening and closing, I could get the notification benefit when ANY door opens or closes - both each of my garage doors, and the entry door to the house.

@@AutomateYourLife The way things are going the word "wired" is becoming obsolete in so many things. It's absurd that Roost gets $40 for a simple wireless sensor. Anyway, for Meross, I'm wondering if I could crack open the sensor and run a wire in series to the other garage door, and the garage-to-kitchen door, where each has a normally closed switch. Like Lead 1 on cracked open sensor-----------terminal 1 on other garage door sensor--(normally closed)--its terminal 2-----------terminal 1 on garage-to-kitchen door sensor --(normally closed)--its terminal 2-----------terminal 2 on cracked sensor. If I'm correct, the circuit is normally closed over a set of 3 normally closed magnet sensors, and if any of them opens, Meross will read that as a door opening. Seems like I just have to "tap in" to the Meross wired (fixed) sensor to do it? (The terminals on most off the shelf sensors are exposed, or just have a plastic shield screwed over them; but the Meross one APPEARS to be sealed. Is it?)

Great video, helped me a lot with my install. One suggestion that made my install easy. Instead of adding the Meross unit on top of the garage door opener, it may be easier to install closer to the inside wall switch. All you have to do is splice in the control wires with the switch wires (Just make sure sensor wire is long enough to reach). That gave me better wifi signal as it's closer than the garage door unit. Meross worked perfectly.

As always, thanks again Brian for super helpful video! Both my MyQ-Edge ST and Hubitat integration (using community developers apps) with MyQ both went bad again this week (4th time now in 8 months), so wanted to look at alternative methods of integration with MyQ to my existing Google/ST/Homekit/etc ecosystem. But I did have a few basic questions: 1) I already have a Chamberlain MyQ WiFi Smart Home with the yellow learn button. Do I need to get the Meross Accesory for pairing this Meross MSG100HK Device? Some say yes, some say no. 2) I assume even with this Meross connected, my regular OEM button and car’s garage opener linkage to the Chamberlain itself is still intact, and this won’t interfere with any of that functionality correct? 3) Lastly, you said at end of video, the Scenes and Routines don’t work? I assume you mean within the Meross app itself, but you can get automations via Google, HomeKit, SmartThings, etc correct?

This is a suuuuuper old video for me now, so I'm not going to be able to answer too much. I tried a more recent version of this (which has homekit and other compatibility that you'll want) and I'm sure Scenes/Routines are worked out. This was very early days for Meross. As for question 2, yep your existing garage door opener works. Nothing changes there. I unfortunately can't speak to anything about Chamberlain MyQ. That company is so confusing all the time with their options anyways. And constantly changing.

Might have already been asked, but I saw somewhere on an Amazon review that the meross can also connect to any opener remote as well. Do you know this to be accurate? My opener is over heard door but they don’t even make keypads and remotes for this model anymore, but would be awesome to use cheap chamberlain or whatever else to control it, even with the opener itself being a totally different brand. Hope that makes sense.

Think of it like a pushbutton remote, just without that pushbutton. Those two wires go into just about any opener that fits the electrical specs on the device. The pushbutton just ends up in an app, annnnnnd you can still have a pushbutton on the wall.

I need to take my 2.4 GHz switch far enough away from my Google router to get the 2.4 signal to connect and setup the switch in the applicable app. Once the switch is setup and I move back to close proximity of my router, Google seems to want to communicate on the 5GHz band which obviously doesn't work. Or I have a defective switch (it's not a Meross switch) made of pure Chinesium, which is highly possible. I was hoping the Meross switch would be different than my current cheap switch, but I am guessing it will exhibit the same behavior with my Google router.

Hi Meggie - So without knowing where you live and your setup, I can't tell you exactly. Here's what you do though. You take a tiny piece of wire and you make a quick (like touch and take off) connection. That'll tell you which two wires you connect the MSG100 to. :) Then it's just like my video. Unfortunately though...when I hear you have an up and down button...I don't think it'll work. You might need one for up and one for down. That would be pricey, but the only way I think. You could also rig up like a logic based thing...but I'm not going to be able to explain that here.

My brother's MSG100 Meross device has blue and black terminal connections (stated to be interchangeable) but the garage control panel that it was supplied with (Teleco Automation TVRSP868E02) has three control terminals (brown, green and white) - presumably that ties in with its own physical remote control being a two button device but I'm not entirely sure whether there's a link there. Does anyone have any idea which two of these three control panel terminals the brown and blue Meross wires need to be connected to? The Meross installation guide seemed to be silent on this and we couldn't find anything at all from Teleco! (Also, out of curiosity, how does the Meross unit send distinct open/close signals along these two wires and how do these interact with the three wire Teleco control panel system in terms of signalling compatibility?) It doesn't send distinct signals. It's just a close or open circuit, so that's the type of garage door opener it's compatible with. It might not work with yours...or you might have to buy 2 (one for open, one for close) if there are separate connection points for each

Is anyone experiencing interference with existing garage door remotes? Ever since I installed my Meross device, I have to push on my remotes several times for them to work. I put the Meross controller on top of my motor unit. If you do have this issue, what did you have to do to fix it? Yes I do have new batteries in my remotes.

I really would like more info on how it works with Google home. I have the My Q device and it just doesn't wrok that well. You can NOT ask google to open it. And when you ask it to close... it sits and beeps for like 10 seconds before closing. Not to mention you have to pay a monthly fee to use Google. So please do a vid showing how it works with Google

The lack of Chamberlain/MyQ support for an Open Door command when tied to voice activation is probably a security feature that is unlikely to change. Imagine people with a land line phone within earshot of a smart device like Google Home, then all it takes is for some social engineering for an unwanted user to call the phone, wait for voice mail to pick up, then ask to open the door. I removed my landline last year but was concerned about possible exploits until then. The beeping is also a security feature that they are unlikely to change since it is to alert unaware bystanders (e.g. kids) to be alert that the door is coming down.

MORE INSTALLATION TIPS IN THIS COMMENT - some of which might be actually useful - First, THANK you. This was my go-to installation guide. And coupon worked: shipped fast. I couldn't make such a simple to follow video with tons of VALUABLE tips. But here are a few that I'm sure you only left out in order to keep the video from being too lengthy: 1. Your tip to ensure power outlet was important. The power cable is not crazy long, so a multi outlet extension cord "tacked" and wrapped here and there may be worth consideration. 2. Those 2 leads from the electric outlet really are A/C power. I just mindlessly held them with my fingers after plugging in, and thought, wow, those leads at the other end are sharp. They weren't. That was electricity. Put tape over the ends temporarily if you're one who puts the plug in first. (I was being lazy, saving myself moving the ladder and making another trip to the outlet in the ceiling. Proper procedure is to leave unplugged until attached. But I'm betting that such laziness [also called "timesaving"] exists with others too :) ) (And yeah, it's only 120 - but bump your sweaty arms against those loose leads :( ) 3. The 2 tiny lock screws for attaching those 2 power leads can come completely out and drop 8 feet to the ground, never to be seen again. If you loosen them for easier insertion of the leads, be ready for that. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED. They are hard to find even if you had a searchlight illuminating the floor. 4. If you don't have the test lead handy use the short control cable, blue to blue or gray to gray, to test. BTW, if you have 2 wires that run along the ceiling and down to a push button visually follow them, and you might try those two first for your test connection. 5. That raises the point that you CAN install your unit by the wall switch, instead of atop the motor. Can you think of any catch why that wouldn't work? It would still need to connect to A/C power, and to the long cord that goes to the magnet sensors. I'm thinking that's the better route, except that there should be no reason to ever maintain it, so might as well tuck it up near the ceiling out of the way. (Also maybe more secure from tampering?) 6. Use cheap flimsy masking tape to hold the long magnet sensor cable to the track as you stretch it out initially, in order to determine how much slack is available on each end of the cable. You don't want to start securing it firmly from one end and work down to the other, then discover that you didn't leave enough length to reach. However, if you do come up short, you can install the magnet sensors higher up from the bottom. I don't know any benefits to putting the magnets high vs. low, as long as they square up. Perhaps higher would lessen the chance of someone bumping into them. 7. Consider removing light bulb (when cool) for easier access to opener screw terminals. Unless I did that it was an ungodly action to reach and turn the screws, and impossible to hold the wire in place while doing that. 8. When installing the magnets, mark the wall spot you want, and mark the door spot you want, and open the door 1/2 or 3/4 way up for better access. I found it made things more reachable, even though I was installing two "nearly" contacting items while they were several feet apart. Mark carefully :) Again, I'm sure you would have included the useful ones of these but if you put in every handy tip it would run 45 minutes, so I'm throwing them out here in the hope that someone who is relatively novice can avoid a little frustration. I GOT this bitch! Thanks to you! It works! It took me more like 3 hours to do a 20 minute job (I could give 50 more tips and pitfalls that caused that - though dropping tiny tiny screws was a great time consuming catastrophe). This is my first ever home WiFi device other than PCs and smartphones. I'm really stoked. And I wouldn't have even ordered it unless I watched this video and saw that it was doable. Thhhhhhhanks for empowering my life!!
