the little "i could've saved her" at the end HURT ME

I think people misunderstand some of what merlin is about. No matter what Merlin does, he brings Arthur closer to his fate. Even if Merlin did not know the future, he would have got to the same place. Those crystals that showed a possible future - always showed the future that happened. He literally couldn’t escape his destiny or his fate.

it's so upsetting to think about how things could've gone so much more differently if merlin maybe told her about his magic, or waited just a bit longer before deciding to up and attempt murder. but that's what's so beautifully tragic about this show. he has to live with his mistakes, just like every other character. usually the protagonists are able to fix these things, but it ended up so broken. it's refreshing, if not depressing.

exactly! He also turned him against Mordred who was truly good at the beginning. If Merlin had gone with his gut instinct and helped Morgana and Mordred then who knows how different things might have been?

I really agree, Maison. This show is my favorite, after years of watching and fanfiction and tributes, etc. When I started watching this show, it was all too clear for me: Merlin is my favorite character. Arthur is nice. The antagonists are evil and it's their fault Arthur died. They're evil. I don't like them. Now, growing a bit and starting to have more logical opinions, I - of course - changed quite a few aspects. I now see that Merlin isn't always right, just because he's the protagonist and it's made to seem like it. And the antagonists do have a point, most of the time; or at least a story worth looking into. Because everything in this story is so... tragedic. I mean, we watch 5 seasons of friendship, betrayal, love, hatred, etc. With the simple goal: Unite the lands of Albion. We learn to love those people - no matter if it's Morgana or Merlin or Arthur or Khillgharrah or Uther or Gaius or Mordred or Gwaine or whoever you loved. And then most of them die. They don't get their happy end. Some of them died. Some of them turned mad. Some of them made the wrong (?) choices. No, they don't get their happy end. In their realm, it took them about ten years to love each other, hate each other, lose friends and family, start and end wars and in the end, all for nothing. They failed. They failed. They failed. They failed. It's as simple as this. *People fail in life.* *People die.* *People make wrong choices.* *People get hurt.* And that's ultimately depressing and melancholic. It's like losing someone you loved. Because it's just unfair and tragic and unwanted and heart-breaking and you don't like it. But you can't change it. And that's life. That's the end of the show *BBC's Merlin*.

@Cat J I'm sorry but I have to disagree. You can't use magic for your personal gain. Merlin is a hypocrite. We had at last two more episode in which it's stated that magic comes with a price, especially if it's to save someone that is dying. Merlin knew that and decided to do as it pleased him to save Uther... the tyrant that carry out a genocide! He could have died peacefully, saving his son but no, Merlin had to act as a god, as always. Like almost in every episode in which decides the fate of everyone... Arthur does pretty much nothing, he's unconscious half of the time. How can we know that he is the one true king?? So, I think that in that episode, particularly, Merlin deserved that bite in the ass.

@@Sarephen I personally think Merlin a man with too much power. He is being pulled in so many directions by many people and creatures. And many at times he messes up. The dragon says he has to fulfill his destiny, Gais is asking him to keep his magic hidden. He is also plagued with his moral compass and his loyalty towards Arthur. He saved Uther not cuz he wanted to but for Arthur's sake. He tries to do his best but it fails. This has given him a lot of reasons to feel responsible. He regrets it but he can't change it so he moves on.

It is so sad to think that if Merlin hadn't have known the future everything would be different

Yup. If he'd followed his instincts instead of that stupid dragon's advise all of the time probably none of the bad stuff would've happened. Him following all the advise he was given made it into a self fulfilling prophecy

Mär Chen idk cause the dragon helped him through so many difficult things . Also the dragon said kill mordred and also warned him about Morgana . I think it’s both of their fault, the knowledge of kilghara helped merlin in many ways though . It’s just so sad that it ended like that though. In my opinion if merlin asked kilghara (dragon) to come quicker and fly over to the land it would have been different story

This. Morgana really was kind and compassionate and just, and it is absolutely understandable that she'd lose some of that on her pursuit to justice. She was right in what she did, until she stopped being all of that, and started being not much better than Uther. I will always cry for the person she used to be, butt the moment she shot those innocents for the sake of getting the knights' loyalty, Morgana died for me, and I'm still grieving for her.

I see it differently I believe she were questioning almost everything cuz.. U know how she trusted merlin the most in the first seasons, believing he could have helped her and be the friend she hoped he would be. To know the person who u once cared so much for, done so much for and helped whenever u could, and then getting to know they were 'destined' to kill you. But their 'destiny' or 'fate' were never set in stone I believe after morgause and morgana's talk before camelot fell into deep sleep, u could choose, u had options not just one but more. She said something like ''The choices u make now, will be utmost important in the future'' She literally said what the entire merlin fandom says, but after every one of the people she cared for, never really telling her about her magic or even helping her. She had no choice but to trust morgause and the other magicians that wanted revenge, they helped her when nobody else in the castle did. And the show shows perfectly why and how she became what she were. Ps. That's just how i see it.

This show tugs at every heartstring. Merlin could’ve saved her, but in the end had to live with his mistakes. Even Arthur realized how much everyone screwed up. Edit:this is still my favorite Merlin edit to this day

I think the whole show was just (kind of like the Greek tragedies) about characters whose flaws ended up destroying everything (which is not their fault btw). Merlin was unsure of himself, and also tried to see good in people too much. This meant that he partly listened to Gaius, partly to kilgharah, and partly to himself which led to Morgana turning evil and everything that followed. Morgana was too passionate and temperamental - she was always switching sides, but when she wen into something, it was never half heartedly. Gaius cared too much for personal safety. Kilgharah couldn't understand humans, which is why he didn't get why Merlin would not kill everyone who was a threat, and why Morganas death would affect lots of people and if Merlin killed an innocent child he would neve forgive himself. Arthur can sometimes be bit of an idiot, no argument there... And I could go on.

I honestly think Kilgharah knew how things would turn out. Becuase if you look at the Arthurian legends, Arthur comes back later and that is the time where he’s supposed to rule. He set everything up to where Arthur does die to fulfill his destiny in the future

Gieus was wrong for letting Morgana go insane like that. I’ve resented him for that.

@@DEGUIDER her magic manifested as visions at first and gaius knew what it was but let her believe it was nothing. It was literally driving her mad. Things got better when her sister helped her get control of it. She just went “evil” for revenge for a lot of valid reasons some non valid reason.

Any betrayal from a hero will make a villain, especially the one who had a difficult childhood.

I can't stop watching this video. This fandom + this band + your editing = perfection.

It is tragic...Morgana became dark and hateful because of what Uther did. She was innocent and kind but after watching so many people...of her kind die at uthers hand played a roll in her becoming "evil". She was merely looking for justice and freedom...merlin could've helped but he chose his destiny's path. They all made mistakes.

Your Merline vids remind me why I'm still on season 1 of the show...I'M NOT READY FOR THIS HEARTBREAK. LET THEM BE HAPPY FOR ONCE.

Its sad because when u think about it they were all really young and all this started because a generation before them made mistakes that landed on their shoulders. Uther having an affair then using magic to create Authur, Giaus essentially being a coward and standing back while Uther persuctued magic users ect.

well i finally finished merlin and one thing i have to say is that i was upset for who she became and merlin that killed her just like that after 5 seasons and i always saw her as somebody who was crazy, but now i notice how much pain was in her, how much he went through and how she had a chance to become so strong but ended up with nothing. beautiful video, thank you

He had to save Camelot....he had to save Arthur, that was his duty. And she had already begun to turn, begun to go dark. And yes, Merlin may have given her the final push but even if he hadn't, her hatred and fear towards Uther had begun to warp her beyond recognition just like Uther's fear of magic and guilt regarding his own actions had finished warping him.

I feel like he put too much trust in Gaius and Kilgarrah than he did in his own wonderful and pure moral compass. He kept thinking they have more experience, they know more which was true but that doesn't make them right, in fact more often than naught that made them more skeptical if something good happened. Merlin had a great moral compass and amazing instincts. If only he trusted them more.

Michael Kean I agree with you so much! Merlin wanted to be kind to Mordred but was not. If he had revealed his magic to Morgana she would have been so much different. At the end of the day Merlin himself was lost and took comfort in the words of his elders. But unfortunately, those words weren't always right.

George Weasley I’ve read a fanfiction about Merlin going back in time and preventing everything bad happening. The problem is everything was solved too quickly. Morgana was never feared throughout the lands and there was only Morgause that since Morgana wasn’t on her side did all her parts into one battle. This means there wasn’t a strong enough bond between Merlin and Arthur (had there bond of season 2). So when Arthur found out he made Merlin leave. But then accepted him in the end. The problem was is that Arthur never became king (or if Uther did die before then Arthur would never have had a big battle) That’s means peace would not last that long and it would be temporary thing as the ledgends of Arthur and Merlin were never spread. This means Arthur may not end up being the Once and Future King. Merlin lives and immortal life. In the fanfiction Merlin tried everything to fix it but it ends up being a bitter end as he would never see Arthur again. So Merlin ends up going back and not changing a thing, and waiting till he can see Arthur again. My theory is that Kilgharrah new everything that would happen. It is sort of my headcanon that he knew what buttons to press for Merlin to not follow is advice, so that Arthur would die and come back and fulfill whatever destiny Arthur as to do in the future.

Everything in this comment section is understandable and in some ways correct. Merlin did listen to Gaius to much, but he didn't listen to Kilgarah as much as he listened to Gaius. Merlin can sometimes make the correct choices when it comes to moral, but those morals he tries to follow it is technically what lead up to everything fucking up. For example, the time when Morgana was going to kill Uther with the dagger Arthur gave her for the birthday and Merlin saw the future and tried to prevent that from accuring was his kind of moral that Gaius put in him. Either Merlin should have let Uther die by Morgana's hand as that time and have Arthur do something about it or should have let Morgana died when she feel down the stairs and just wait for Uther to die. Honestly the better option was to let Morgana die. Kilgarah has warned Merlin about her and he was going to listen until Gaius persuaded him to save Morgana. Gaius kept putting the thought of hiding his magic was a better option for everyone. He made Merlin feel that no one would accept him. Even when Morgana started showing signs of actually having magic, Gaius told Merlin to not tell Morgana of her gifts and to hide himself from her. That wasn't right, if Morgana had someone with her through out the whole thing then no one would betray anyone or no one would have die. Merlin should have seriously listened to Kilgarah instead of Gaius. Gaius may have been there for Merlin, but he didn't have to go through the same thing as Merlin so he didn't give the best advice especially since he was close to Uther.

Morgana always says Arthur is just like his father but she doesn't want to admit she is much more like Uther than her brother

I know it too so now I can watch it relaxed (I started to watch it a few days ago and I'm just at the second episode of the second season) But I looked up the description of the other episodes and was shocked that Morgana is (going to be) evil But well, it still is a good series^^ (If there are grammatical mistakes, I'm sorry, I'm from Germany :D )

I've watched this video so many times now and it never fails to amaze me. It's such an amazing video and the scenes that you chose to use and lines from the show match the lyrics perfectly.

Everyone could have had their happy ending if Merlin had just let Morgana die after she fell down the stairs. Easy, clean and no one to blame. But Merlin put his own feelings and emotional well being ahead of his duty to protect Arthur and Camelot. He knew what she was but thought he was strong enough to save her and change her fate. Being to confident in himself and having so much power at a young age did not help him. Sad really. He basically destroyed everything he tried to protect. And why he didnt send that dragon after Morgana's half sister's evil ass I will never understand. She was what pushed Morgana over the edge (didn't take a big push but still) and Morgana helped grow the hatred in Mordred. It was a good show wish it had ended differently was such a let down.

Caroline .J. Morgana at that moment had already met and sided with Morgause and it was bc of her that Camelot was going to get destroyed. Morgana was going to kill a whole kingdom full of innocent people and Arthur. Merlin did what had to be done.
