Merle Ronald Haggard (April 6, 1937 - April 6, 2016) was an American country singer, songwriter, guitarist, and fiddler.
Haggard was born in Oildale, California, during the Great Depression. His childhood was troubled after the death of his father, and he was incarcerated several times in his youth. After being released from San Quentin State Prison in 1960, he managed to turn his life around and launch a successful country music career, gaining popularity with his songs about the working class that occasionally contained themes contrary to the prevailing anti-Vietnam War sentiment of much popular music of the time. Between the 1960s and the 1980s, he had 38 number-one hits on the US country charts, several of which also made the Billboard all-genre singles chart. Haggard continued to release successful albums into the 2000s.
Jewel Kilcher (born May 23, 1974) is an American singer-songwriter, musician, producer, actress, author, and poet. She has received four Grammy Award nominations and, as of 2015, has sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

Jewel is so very precious.
When I was in the Navy, I very frequently flew to different stations and/or ships for a temporary assignment. My wife would usually take me to the airport and many years later, she told me that almost every time when headed home in our truck this Merle Haggard song would come on the radio. She said it was almost freeky that it happened so often. To this day, she can't hear it without tearing up.
God be with you, mr Haggard, wish I could have met you, your songs are with me and my family....................now you're with your folks again...........

This song reminds me of the time I had to leave the love of my life and fly back for the last 6 months of a year tour in Korea.
I just wish I could sing like this. Maybe one day, God will let me!!.
First time I have heard jewel sing beautiful compliments merle to perfection, love the song.
The song is great. The performance likewise. If you look behind Jewel there is a guy playing a black ovation cutaway. This is the great Freddy Powers a master songwriter and Merle's (and Willie's) longtime sidekick that is suffering from Parkinson's Disease. If you have a chance say a prayer or have a kind thought for Freddy.

This was the ETS (Expiration Term of Service) song. They played it at the NCO club in Bamberg, Germany whenever one of us was getting ready to fly back home.
