The Merkava is admirably adapted to the battlefield on which it operates. However, I'd say the title of "World's Best Contemporary MBT" belongs to the Leopard, whose evolution continues to increase its capabilities to a high degree. It is likely to be the first Western tank to feature a 140mm gun.

Merkava 4m is the only Fifth Generation tank in the world with protection in TOP against missile-like Javelin so it's the BEST tank in the World with proven Trophy active protected only Engine and transmission come from outside its 25% Tank vas check in USA un Snow in Water in all conditions you can think. Have an air conditioner! No problem with the Engine in front because having a very satistificated computer system newest in the World with new IMI 253 120MM Canon with great vertical and horizontal turret angle - much better when any tank - can move forward with current only visible and computer to fire - in USSR tanks turret in middle and very long so horizontal angle good only on a flat surface - also The IDF was to begin trials of Elbit's Iron Vision, the world's first helmet-mounted display for tanks, in mid-2017. Israel's Elbit, which developed the helmet-mounted display system for the F-35, plans Iron Vision to use a circular review system as a number of externally mounted cameras to project the 360° view of a tank's surroundings onto the helmet-mounted display of its crew members. This allows the crew members to see outside the tank while staying inside, without having to open the hatches. Yes, it's coming from F35 it's our Israeli system!

I'm sorry but it is far from the best mbt, although I do not doubt its technology the tank itself is extremely flawed in many aspects, first we'll talk about the engine, it is mounted in the front which has more cons than pros, the front mounted engine means that when the tank is facing the enemy it gives off a much higher thermal signature, not mention that is also disrupts the thermal sight for the gunner, some argue it is a useful form of protection which many would disagree mainly because the front of the Hull is only 100mm thich meaning that it could literally be immobilised from the front by even late ww2 tanks if they hit and im not even going to mention the more modern apfsds it will likely face which would still just go straight through the engine anyway killing both the crew and rendering the tank inoperable, also another problem in terms of protection is the turret, the angling makes it extremely succeptable to shot traps instantly knocking out the tank, by modern standards it is extremely lacking design, I would hardly call it a fifth generation tank, the best mbt would either be the leopard 2a7, m1a2 sep v3 or the upcoming challenger 3

@@BenyKarachun🤣🤣🤣 you must be joking, the merkava is just a bad tank, the only thing it has going for it is an aps but most nato tanks are planned to have them so the merkavas only strong point won't even matter, it has a bad engine, mediocre gun at best, some of the worst armour ive seen for a modern mbt, it has a front mounted engine that acts as "extra protection" but at the same time has unreliable fire protection systems so once that engine gets hit, which it will, the tank is done for, I'm sorry your favourite tank is nowhere near as good as most other nato tanks but that's just facts, list me the reasons why the merkava is better than the challenger 2, leopard 2a7 and m1a2 sep v4, ill wait.

Actually it would work well for JSDF's purposes. The Merkava is very much a defensive tank. Japan's Type 90 is built around a lot of the same principles at the Leopard series which is an open country maneuver warfare tank, not likely the type of combat that Japanese tanks are likely to see. The Merkava is well suited to going hull-down in a prepared position and holding around. Japanese terrain is very mountainous, an attacking armor force would have very few options of advance allowing the defender to stack tanks in defensive positions. Merkava's heavy weight and short range would not be such a downside in those scenarios.

Your description of the deal between the UK and Israel on the Chieftan is lacking. What happened was: The British sought to benefit from Israeli battlefield experience for the development of their next tank. The project was initiated with the Israelis being required to buy large quantities of obsolete Centurion tanks, and provide their engineering analyses and some of their technology, in return for the supply of the production line Chieftans. The Israelis abided by their part, they provided the R&D and engineering studies as well as how these married up to the tactical implementation of the armour. They bought hundreds of hundreds of obsolete Centurions, which they intended to upgrade as a stop gap measure until the Chieftans arrived, mainly to replace Shermans and Super-Shermans. Once the British secured their objectives from the relationship, they annulled the deal, leaving Israel without a new tank. This resulted in two things, (a) The lineage of the Merkava MBT's and (b) Israel refusing to enter a R&D -> Production project with Britain for a weapons system ever again.

Very good, enjoyable mini-doc, about a decent subject matter. I Reckon the Challenger 2 is still the best most suitable Tank on earth, and when the Challenger 3 is commissioned it'll be even better and way above anything out there on today's market, remember only the Challenger 1 and 2 have never been destroyed by Enemy fire, it's the Only fully battle tested tank, tested to breaking point, And then it still didn't break, it's reliability is legendary, longest Tank on Tank Kill, one took around 25 RPG-7S and another around 40, the CH-2 that took around 25-30 RPGs, also took continuous small arms fire, an anti Tank rocket, it was recovered all crew safe and in tact, fixed and back out within 6hrs, in fact both thanks continued to function as usual, an amazing tank. The Merkava MK4 has one amazing feature, it ms also a troop carrier, with the engine at the front performing ballistic protection from almost everything, but also means it can be disabled quite easily especially by something like Challenger and Abrams, T-14 Armata, Leopard 2A, but not things like T80/90 etc..etc... Enjoyed the video mate.

@@ConstantineJoseph - Israel's GDP is approaching $400 billion, and therefore they can certainly afford to maintain and ultimately develop their own economy. Moreover, most of the money that Israel receives from the U.S. is returned to the U.S. in the form of arms purchases, and that in itself helps to keep many Americans employed in the defense industry. Additionally, by financially assisting Israel with money to purchase American made weapons, the Pentagon gets an opportunity to see how well their weapons perform in an actual combat scenario before American troops ever have to use those same weapons in an actual combat scenario. As well, Israel often makes many improvements to the American made weapons that are sold to Israel, and that ineluctably saves the U.S. government billions of dollars in research and development. The U.S. also continues to maintain its influence over Israel -- and ultimately much of the Middle East -- by providing financial aid to Israel. Thus, it is a win/win situation for the U.S. to financially assist Israel. Learn some facts before posting any more ignorant comments on KZread.

Great Video on a great tank. Though my own opinion is its not the Greatest tank in the world I will say this its the best tank for Israel and if it had a 120mm L55 gun not its L44 I would then consider it being the greatest. With the Trophy system it has done very well back in 2014s protective edge and with the recent conflict with the occupants in the Gaza strip whom are throwing missiles at Israel and the other dicks in Lebanon whom with the big but small dicks in Iran whom are arming them, I feel the Merkava tanks will be embroiled in another conflict and will prove itself once again. For me one of the Greatest tanks in the world today with its knew upgrade being announced is the British Challenger 2 now with the knew upgrade being called Challenger 3 is the best tank in the world when it comes to protecting its crew. With the older Challenger 1 still in service Challenger 2 there combat record is proof of that(Longest direct tank on tank kill no crewman killed in conflict). The Merkava is designed from British tanks at first a combo of the Centurion and Chieftain tanks but like you said is unique and is why I think it is such an awesome tank. (Just a note for those whom don't know Challenger 2 only has 5% of common parts with its older brother Challenger 1 tank and is different tank.) Maybe you should do some vids on some of the British tanks after the Centurion for your viewers for knowledge. And would like to add because of its need to survive Israel even with captured equipment had done the best in upgrading it and using it to defend against an enemy whom should give up and use peace not war.

The Merkava will only be expected to make short bounds from one defensive position to another or limited range attacks/counter-attacks. It isn't exactly expected to drive to Tehran on one tank of fuel. Like the video said, the IDF no longer has plans to drive all the way to Damascus, so who cares if it's max range is short?

Second, at what point did I say "fight a war on a single gas tank"? What I said was, "they are closer to resupply so limited range is not a major concern". Not only airlift. But also to transport by rail. They are wider and bigger. Most tank sizes were defined because they must be transported by rail or airlift. This limits tanks engineers in almost every country. Merkava is transported by Big Trucks in roads, you can cross entire Israel in less then a day by truck and get anywhere. So no need for Airlift and Rails. Those tanks can be transported in matter of hours to any front should war to occur. In case of tiny israel, to mount tank on rail or airlift would be waste of time, because this would take days.

I remember being in the Negev and they told my mom about a short cut on one of the unmarked military roads. It was paraded wide with only the center paved. When we encountered other cars we would each put a wheels in the dirt. Then came a convoy of tanks on transporters. They stayed on the pavement forcing us to stop on the shoulder. The use of transporters meant redeployment was faster and wear and tear on tanks was reduced.
