Mercury/Tohatsu Outboard Carburetor Cleaning on a 4HP/5HP/6HP 4 Stroke - Carb Removal and Cleaning

Quick video showing my attempt to remove and clean the carb on a Mercury 6HP 4-stroke outboard (same for Mercury/Tohatsu 4-stroke 4hp/5hp/6hp). Outboard carburetor service.

Here is the video where I did EVERY MAINTENANCE item in the manual plus a carb removal and cleaning:
• EVERY MAINTENANCE ITEM...
Safety First! Make sure gas valve is closed and all gas is drained from lines in a safe manner away from all heat sources (garage heater and incandescent bulbs). Ideally entire system is drained or ran dry.
Make sure motor is secure and cannot tip over
Inspect all gas lines and carb for gas leaks after reinstalling
If you have an electric start, unhook it before working

All maintenance items are the same for Mercury 4HP, 5HP and 6HP 4-stroke outboards and Tohatsu 4HP, 5HP and 6HP 4-stroke outboards.

Great Video, thanks heaps. These look like pretty good engines. I just bought a 4hp "new" according to the owner, a few years old but never been in the water. It started when I bought it, but took it home and a week later I just couldnt get it going without choke on, and it would stall within 30 seconds every time. Quick carb clean - it was pretty dirty - and it started first pull. One suggestion, I unscrewed the bolt on top of the throttle linkage to release it. It came out easy and saves putting pressure on anything and bending the linkage. Just dont do it up too tight when putting it back together or you wont be able to shift your throttle. If anyone knows, id love to know the torque setting for this one. Heres hoping I get hundreds of hours out of my new toy.

I found that if I take the gas cap off, pressurize the gas tank with a little bit of air pressure I put my hand over the tank and blow through my fingers. It starts first pull cold. Otherwise, you do have to wait for the pulse pump only activated when you pull the cord to allow gas Into the carb.

There are 2 jets, the main and an idle jet. If it won’t idle without choke there are usually 2 issues. Your idle jet/circuit in the carb is still dirty or your fuel air mixture is off and the carb is not sending enough gas at idle. There is an idle speed screw (also known as fuel air mixture screw) that you can adjust. Couple questions: Has it always done this? Did you get it new or used? What year is the motor?

  • @Skinnyriver

Yeah that screw sets idle speed, it sets the throttle valve position when tiller is at 0 throttle. That is not really a filter, it’s just a mesh screen. I believe it really is a spark arrester if the motor backfires and it keeps big contamination out but it doesn’t really filter anything. You can clean it with a wire brush.

Hey, you said the vacuum tubes in the carburetor go to the bottom of the engine? Or do they go outside? Because on my 5HP Tohatsu there’s a hole that it may seem to be for it and the hose tip would end outside the engine through that hole.

  • @Skinnyriver

At 8:27 you mention the gaskets. I tore a few milimeters of one edge of gasket on the carb side cause it sticks out a little and caught my finger during cleaning. I got my motor running after cleaning carb jets, especially needle that controls the float. However, my engine stalls with choke fully engaged after 1-2 minutes and shakes a lot, stalls immediately with choke disengaged. You think my fuel/air mixture could be too lean due to an air leak at that gasket causing it to stall?

Hello Sir, I need help! My hangkai/tohatsu/mercury 6hp outboard motor similar to yours is giving me some serious problems. I pulled and cleaned out the carburetor and even cleaned out the jets. Now I'm struggling with tuning the pilot jet and the mixing screw to get the motor running correctly. I turned the pilot jet all the way closed and tried to tune the idling with the pilot mixing screw. The result of this is my spark plug becoming fowled up and very sooty. Does this mean I'm running extremely rich? And what is the best setting for the pilot jet? Plus when I try to rev up the engine it coughs through the intake and backfires. Please let me know what you think I should do to fix this issue. Thanks again

  • @Skinnyriver

If you are backfiring and fouling your spark plug you are probably too rich. The adjustment screw on Mercuries are seal (you can’t get to them per USA EPA emission regulations). But I would turn screw all the way in and then out 1 1/4 turn and start there experimenting

  • @Skinnyriver

    @Skinnyriver

    Жыл бұрын

I remember you said it would only idle with choke on. When did the starting issue begin? Was it after you tried or took something a part? Also what year is it? The main things (other than the carb) it can be: 1) Fuel supply (most likely) dirty fuel filter, fuel pump, something going on with your tank/lines, gas cap vent stopped up, gas valve stopped up I would try to get my hands on an external tank and try that 2) No spark 3) emergency stop lanyard is not in all the way or the circuit has a short There are some videos showing you can take the drain screw out of the carb bowl, hold small bottle at the drain and pull the pull cord a few times. If you get fuel coming out of the drain you are getting gas and your fuel pump is good. I haven’t done it but see if you can find one of those videos.

It starts and only stays on when I spray starter fluid through the air intake, once I stop spraying it the motor stops. There is fuel getting all the way to the carb because I did process of elimination. I maybe thought the fuel filter was bad so I took the fuel filter off and connected the hose from the fuel pump and the hose that feeds into the carb, runs fine, but then I’ll put the fuel filter back on and connect the hoses and motor won’t run… I’m a little confused. Get new fuel filter, if you use internal tank fill gas tank all the way, open gas valve, let it sit for 10 mins to let gravity fill all lines with gas, should start in 3 pulls. If it doesn’t then you need to clean the carb.

  • @Skinnyriver

Oh ok thought you mentioned it ran without fuel filter. That obviously points to fuel filter stopping flow. If it starts with starting fluid they it has to be a gas problem (either bad gas or gas supply). If you are getting fuel to the carb then it has to be a carb issue. My initial thought is you may have a fuel pump issue and you are not sending enough fuel to the carb. Are you using an internal tank or external? I would change to the other to rule out gas flow from tank issue. But if you are 100% sure you are getting really good gas flow to the carb (not just filling up the carb bowl but keeping it full) then it’s a carb issue. If your gas flow is not sufficient it’s either fuel pump, fuel filter, clog/kink somewhere, or an issue with your fuel tank priming bulb, venting, etc

Yeah I was wondering about the air filter as well. Found out that most outboards don’t have air filters simply due to lakes being must cleaner (less dust and debris than your yard (mowing) or on the road. I read The mesh is a flame arrestor (I think) and can help the air be uniformed going into the carb. It’s not a filter at all so it doesn’t need cleaning for air flow but maybe hit it gently with a metal brush if it gets cruded to help with spark/flame arresting

@@Skinnyriver air is being sucked in there. Spark arrestors are screens located in the exhaust tail pipe area. This intake screen is not a spark arrestor. It could get dirty/ dusty and decrease airflow causing engine to starve. I’m gonna remove mine and clean with compressed air. My honda 5hp is 36 years old. Wont hurt to clean it I guess. Thanks
