Clogged Carburetor Diagnosis 2007 5HP Mercury / Tohatsu Outboard Basic Maintenance

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The most common problems that we see with outboard motors of all sizes brought in for service at Highland Outboards are related to carburetors. Performance issues or failure to start/run are often the result of buildup of unwanted materials in the small passages, jets, and valves inside the carb. The effects that ethanol blend gasolines have on small engine carburetors are becoming widely recognized in the industry. The buildup of residues within the carb causes all kinds of problems that can potentially ruin a good day on the water. The typical symptoms of ethanol-related carb problems are:
* Hard/Impossible to start
* Motor starts, but dies at full throttle
* Engine does not idle or run without choke
The good news is that fuel additives are available to help neutralize ethanol and prevent the breakdown of today's gasoline mixtures. We recommend the use of ethanol treatment and stabilizers every time you fill-up your outboard gas tank.
In this video we show a typical clogged carburetor diagnosis including disassembly and proof of root cause. This example is shown on a 2007 Mercury ME5M 4ST 5HP outboard, but would be very similar on Honda, Evinrude, Johnson, Yamaha, or other 4-stroke and 2-stroke outboard motors.

    Thanks for the video. Small learning curve makes it quite easy after the first attempt. Had a gummed up carb on a 6hp Tohatsu, despite draining the bowl over winter. Cleaned the main jet with a steel wire strand, which allowed it to start. But could not idle. As there is no jet to clean, but a circuit, I left it soaking in White Spirit. Morning after resulted in a telltale mucus residue at the bottom of the container. Voilá, runs like new.

    Sounds like my issue. Motor only has a few hours on it and it's an 05 model. Ain't been cranked since 05. I can only get it to run on starter fluid in the carb right now. Guess I'ma bout to do what you did an then watch your next video on how to rebuild it. Mine is a Yamaha 4hp 4 stroke but it should be very similar

    I came up with a crazy idea years ago. If it has a carburetor don’t use fuel with ethanol, ever. You can get premium fuel that has ethanol so I only use 91 octane ethanol free gas. Also pump some into a jerry can or your car first to make sure the ethanol is out of the line. If you are too cheap for this then don’t use anything with a carburetor because it will cost you more in the long run anyway.

    I really like your videos as i have learned a lot from them. I enjoy rehabilitating old Johnson Evinrude motors. Although I am at my whits end on a 1972 25 hp model 25R72R. i have changed out the powerhead, lower unit w/3 eared gears, seals, impeller, carb kit and even a rebuilt carb a "professional" installed kit. Now it acts like the carb is clogged and is dripping gas from what appears like its from the float bowl and does it with either carb i have for it. And the spark plugs seem to be dry. Also just replaced leaf valve gaskets as internal one was leaking. water into top cylinder. I know thats alot but any ideas and suggestions? ? Thank You, Kentucky Poor Boy

    Sounds like the float valve isn't cutting off fuel flow when the carb gets full. Floods the engine, and shoots out the overflow port.

    My motor would start but die out after a short amount of time. Took it to repair guy who said gunk in carb . Ching-ching 150 bucks. Started doing the same thing not long after. Would run for awhile then konk out. Seemed like it's just not getting fuel to the carb. Squeeze ball would soften. Tried putting fuel tank at a higher elevation which helped a little, but still konked out. Fuel pump maybe? Thanks.

    Disconnect the fuel hose that's attached to the carb, and pull the starter cable. See if any fuel comes out. If it does, then your pump is fine.

    both of them is correctly. You must be carefully to check float position, because it's ("float" ) always changing to the adjustment. you are making the adjustment yourself.

    Great video ...I have a 4hp tohatsu and rin perfect for hours and then it I have to dock and put motor up I tilt up lean to handle ,when going again its tarts to sputter and eventually stalls and spit out fuel from the over flow ,I have had the carb cleaned and even the float valve replaced and it still happens and normally I have to let it sit for a while and then eventually it will start ,sometimes I can get it to go by putting in full throttle ....could it be that the float valve is just getting stuck and gas over flows ..I bought it used 4 years ago and haven't been able to resolve this otherwise it runs great.

    +patrick evans probably some varnish in the fuel pump, but the passages are not as small as in the carb, so the flow of clean gas is usually enough to keep it functioning properly.

    Hello, I have a Nissan 18hp 2 stroke, my luck with 2 strokes and carbs hasnt been good, 4 strokes im good... I think it needs some cleaning... When accelerating it stutters/ hesitates then runs like a screaming demon... all speeds are fine at steady, but if you go from just off idle to wot itll stutter for about 15 seconds then go, the whole time slowly revving, just not smoothly... Plugs good, new coils because the coil went bad last year.. It has been through several tanks of fuel now, and hasnt cleared of this issue... I havent found a place for nissan carb parts though... is it tohatsu as well?
