Thanks for posting this. I busted the head off my trim release screw too. What I did differently though was I heated up the screwdriver then pressed that into the screw rather than heating up and melting the screw itself. Thanks for the idea.

Good tip, man thanks. Saw something similar on a forum that suggested heating a wide flat blade screw driver and pressing it into the bolt. Why on earth use nylon? Everywhere I read people are having issues with these things. I broke 1/2 the head off mine, but was still able to get the motor up because a welded plug blew out on top of the main cylinder (so all the pressure was gone anyway). I still needed to be able to work the nylon bolt in and out to bleed the unit after getting the blown plug fixed. I drilled a hole in the center of the nylon bolt and drove a 1" #8 phillips screw into it to provide some stability to the remaining part of the head so I could grab onto it with a pair of vice grips. I had to do this and bleed the unit in my bench vice. Yes, I could have waited for the new $40 replacement nylon bolt to arrive next week but my boat's been down for almost 3 weeks and I really wanted to use it this weekend!

they use nylon so they bust off easy and then they can charge you 40$ to replace it! those things should never be so tight that you can't get it out with a screwdriver but anyway we all have to learn some how lol.

Nice tech tip....Thanks! BTW, when my 86 150 Merc wouldn't go up I unscrewed the relief valve and lifted it manually.....not sure if your broken nylon head is for the relief, but mine isn't nylon and is on the opposite side. Nice Post!

Noe Alvarez Most of times the motor doesn’t go bad... it just needs brushes replaced that ride against the armature. Your local marina would have them

I have a 1990 135HP Black Max as well. I'm going through trying to get a replacement right now also. I talked to my Marine repair guy. He helped me track down some part #s for this. I have to replace mine too. The OEM part# is 826729A10 - be prepared to shell out 1200 - 1400 bucks for this one. Its the motor and pump assembly - probably not needed, but Mercury wont sell them separate. The Sierra - replacement motor only is 18-6273-1 $662.52 I found a knockoff from DB Electrical for $141.08 part# 10815P Good luck!

So I have a 1977 Johnson 85 HP and I just bought this boat well the the motor would go down but wouldn't go back up so I put hydraulic fluid in bled the line and it was working great it was going up and down just fine then all the sudden when I went to press the button for to go up or down it would just click and kept clicking so I assumed it was solenoid well I replace the solenoid it stop clicking it wasn't doing nothing then all of a sudden it went down but it would not go back up and it made a weird humming noise coming from the trim area I am guessing and now it doesn't do anything doesn't go up doesn't go down doesnt click or any noises.. nothing do u have an idea what it could be ?

Swift Hoffman could be your brushes that ride on the armature. You'll have to take trim motor off to access these

@@peterstrouss2002 I took a torch to it and melted it all out then clean all the plastic out with a pick and put a new nylon bolt in it. It was a pain and time consuming. I probably spent at least 3 hours on it
