Responsible for the development of the W 126 was Bruno Sacco, at that time head of the department stylistics, and Werner Breitschwerdt as Director of passenger car bodies.

In addition, it was decided not to offer a successor to the flagship 450 SEL 6.9 with 210 kW (286 hp), since such a heavy car no longer seemed contemporary with high fuel consumption. The new top model 500 SEL with 177 kW (241 hp) grew at almost the same performance due to the lower driving resistance.
The first vehicles of the pilot series were completed in February 1979 and subjected to final sea trials. They were exclusively equipped with a short wheelbase, the vehicle version with an extended wheelbase was only in the fall, just in time for presentation at the IAA in September, completed.

@@user-sf7kl9uh7kI was thinking how archaic and slow the developmental process was back then. But it was impressive to see how advance this car was compared to all other cars at the time.
This is the best car that the Mercedes factory has produced, my father had it, he drove it for 20 years, when you drive in it, you feel like you are driving in a ship.
Cost was no object. Engineered to be right in every way possible, made from the best that was available in it’s time, yet feeling hand crafted and built with love and passion for excellence.
So much love all around the World for the W126..... Well done all those people who designed and made this Car you have an impact on the lives of millions of people who have an emotional connection with this very special Car!
Never will be built a car like w126. Even by MB. Long live Sacco.

Proud to say I had owned 3 W126 cars in a period of 8 years of my work in the USA. A 1991 420SEL (Black on Black), a 1988 500SEC (Blue metallic paint with grey leather seats; the unmolested European version) and a 1983 300SD (Golden silver paint with Black seats). In terms of Luxury, speed, safety, there is no other car to beat a W126.
over engineered masterpiece, that's getting what you paid for. I do prefer this robust, reliable and classic car... a real time machine. incredible elegance.

The facelift W126 SE straight six is the ultimate configuration of this grand automobile.
My aunt had one of these in the 80's in California and when I went to visit from UK, she took us every where in it Nevada, the west coast, lake Tahoe. Yosemite etc. Amazing

Haha. For me it was the other way around. My uncle in London had one as a company car and he drove me all over the UK in it. You guys have much higher speed limit on the motorway and I was so impressed how quiet and stable it was at high speed.
I absolutely LOVE the older Mercedes Benz cars,especially the W 126 body
i LOVE MY 1986 300SDL! Back when Mercedes really built a car. My W126 has 267000 miles and is still looking and driving excellent!

I daily drive a 1981 300SD, has 278,000 on it and drives great.
i use to own w126 1987 300 se with all the accessorys, it was the best car that i have ever owned. then the engine went bad and i didn"t have a place to repair it and i had to sell the car. i still miss that beaty! one day im gonna buy one again and never ever gonna sell it!
I own a 1984 300sd with 285 kilometers on the dial and still runs like a dream

I can only agree with that. The shapes of the W126 completely turn off any reference to time. Presented 40 years ago, you can not only see it today, but probably in 40 years. There is hardly a vehicle that radiates cool elegance, noblesse, timelessness, safety and the impression of being fully milled as much as the 80s S-Class. No Baroque like the W116 & no stupid decadence like the W140 that never fit into his time. The W126 is just the most perfect ever built S-Class but also one of the coolest vehicles on the planet

max mustermann isnt risiculous today to use a w126 ! A 500 or 560 SEC or SEL is allways ready for endure modern circulations...is my memorie is good last years had whelebase more lenght (all models of sedan mesure 5m25) ...if old w126 SE (no L) look alike W123 of taximen..in long whelebase design is fluid and perfect by great lenght...a true limo with confort for rear passenger...
We used 7 cars from w126 . I car 300se and 1 car 560se and 5 cars 560sel all is the best cars in old classk cars . 3 years we used w140 s500 1998 wow it need abock to righte what we feel .. Now we have 1 car 560sel and 2 cars w220 . Thanks german 👍👍👍👍👍

It’s also so you can see it when it very bright out too.
I love my 1990 300SEL, 211.000 kms, running like new. I've found tourists taking selfies with it :)

Can we all just look at the crash tests and be amazed by the fact a car of this age is that good in an accident! It took years before lesser cars were made to be good in accidents! If you crashed a metro or something like that then it would fold like a cheap suit.

I just love the sleek shape of these. My dad had a W108 S class, and a W116. I have a C class W202 and a W203. Must say they dont make them like they used to.

Amazeballs - in the past 3-4 weeks or so, one of my neighbours bought a W126, and another an R129. They are not in the best shape; parked in the street as daily beaters... so I get to walk past two awesome cars every day now :)

Der 500 SE war mit 8,5 l/100 km (DDR-Transit-Autobahn) unschlagbar im Verbrauch. Die Maschine blieb dabei im Bereich 1000-1100 Umdrehungen (Leerlauf 900).
my friend have an E240 TD model 1979 , mileage on 999999 finished no more space for more numbers and it's still running and performing like a 2 to 3 years old car

Nicht ganz mercedes war mal bester! Inzwischen nicht mehr es gibt so viele automarken die gute autos für weniger geld anbieten! mercedes audi bmw vw haben nichts anderes gemacht als die preise zu erhöhen seit fast 20 jahren!!!
I'd wish I could be driven in one of those, in the past they were too unique now there are not too many :(

Очень красивая машина.В 2000м году хотел покупать 126й за 2500 бакинских. Оставил задаток продавцу,он должен был сделать предпродажную подготовку(отполировать ,хим чистка ,замена расходников) Пришёл забирать а салон машины украли варварски.Я был расстроен не меньше хозяина. Пришлось брать 124й.
