Mercedes W124 and W201: Guide to LED Lights and a Comparison(Day and Night)

A pretty comprehensive and long guide to running LEDS in your Mercedes W124 and W201. This can apply to other cars that run the same bulbs as well such as the W126, W140, etc. I go over which bulbs you'll need and which ones will work with early cars and late cars which have the bulb out indicator. I also show a comparison between halogen and LED lights in different situations including at night. LEDs have come a long way in recent years and they're finally at a point to where you can easily find good ones that will actually improve light output and not blind people.

    The lights that I showed in the video doesn’t trigger that light. The turn signals are not LED and the rear brake lights are not LED. Those will make it turn on. The relay I showed will not fix the orange light, just the hyper flash on the turn signals.

    I haven’t made a video yet but I do know it is not easy to find bulbs because there’s is little clearance inside the w124 cluster. You would need to find the same style bulb with the same or less dimensions.

    Thank you for this video. Just to clarify - the Auxito LED bulb has the built-in resistor, isn't it? (The Bulb Out in your W124 did not light up when you turned the headlights and high beams on). My W124 is an European model (250D from 1987) and it has the Bulb Out indicator on the cluster. How long do the Auxito bulbs last? As my car does not have daytime running lights, I am turning on the headlights at all moments (currently using Philips X-Treme Vision halogens, which have proven to be very long lasting). One more question: How do LEDs behave in snow/winter? As they are cooler than halogens, I've read that ice could form in front of the headlights. Have you ever experienced this with your vehicle? Because I run the headlights on at all moments, these LEDs would definitely be an asset to consume less battery power. Hopefully they will last under strong heatwaves (+40 C / 104 F)

  • @SoCal210

    @SoCal210

    Жыл бұрын

    There isn’t a resistor in these bulbs, it uses enough power to prevent the bulb out indicator from going off. They run much cooler than a halogen bulb so it’s likely that ice can form. I have no experience with this since it never gets colder than 60F where I live. I have been using these since I posted this video and have no issues and have been using it even longer on my family members cars without issue.

    I replaced the headlights with the Auxito LEDs. I can't thank you enough for this video and your comprehensive recommendations. My W124 has now way better highway illumination. It is a massive difference between the Philips X-Treme halogens with about 2100 LM to the Auxito with 20,000 LM. Yet indeed, as your video explains, they don't blind other drivers. My family and I commute between two cities (200 Km each way) at least once a month, returning home at night most of the time, so this LED improvement is crucial. Interestingly, my son can hear the LED bulbs fans running at quiet volume from outside the car. But sadly, in my case after installing the Auxito bulbs the bulb out indicator went off, at both regular and high beams. I decided that it doesn't matter and will remove the bulb of the indicator in the cluster at a later time (it will require me to pull out the cluster) so that I can replace all the exterior lights to LEDs, and just keep an eye on them if they fail from outside the car. I will take safety over convenience. On Friday I will install the Phinlion BA9's as per your indication for "City lights", replacing the tiny bulbs located inside of the headlights ("parking lights"). Not hoping too much on this, but if they could be used as daytime running lights it could be a big blessing... they are 400 LM output each so I will see. Do you use the red Katur 1156 red LEDs for both taillights and brake lights? If so I'll order 4 of them. I think halogen-wise the bulbs are the same...

  • @SoCal210

    @SoCal210

    10 ай бұрын

    @drkam6 I only used them on the taillights not the brake lights. Only my 3rd brake light is LED. The 3rd brake lights as LEDs were fine initially but eventually ended up causing a bulb out indicator. If you remove the indicator then it is not an issue. Auxito also makes excellent red LED bulbs now. You would need 1156 and 1157 bulbs. The 1156 for the running lights and the 1157 for the dual filament brake lights.

    The Phinlion BA9 bulbs arrived, and installed them this afternoon. They are a massive difference compared to the meager 6W little bulbs. I parked the car on a street leaving the Phinlion's on, then walked away to see how visible they are from a distance. The bulbs are definitely decent to be used as daytime running lights under cloudy sky/shady conditions. In bright sun I'd turn on the regular Auxito headlamps. But indeed, it is amazing the amount of light the Phinlion's emit. This is another big improvement in my car and it finally has some conditional daytime running lights!

    Do you know if its possible to get LED Lights that aren't white, and instead near perfectly mimic the halogens in terms of color tempature? I've found I like the much more warm white of all the stock lights so much more than the LED's, but all the LED Bulbs out there seem to be extremely white. I know warm white LED's exist, but I can't seem to find anything on amazon at least.

  • @SoCal210

    No. I think they don’t fit the styling of the w124. The only way I would imagine doing it is mourning a projecter into the original housing kind of like the late production r129s. Although I don’t think it’s worth the effort because the auxito h4 leds in the original housings have a nice sharp cutoff and illuminate the road extremely well. Not a whole lot to be gained getting projectors IMO.

  • @alanOHALAN

    @@SoCal210 I thought it is illegal to install LED or HID in non-projector housing. But the original housing lens does have the lens that can cutoff light, however my housing reflective silver is corroded. I am thinking about getting a LED with built-in mini projector. They cost about 60 dollars on Amazon. Not sure how it will work with the lens cover.

  • @SoCal210

    The LEDs like the auxito brand copy the beam pattern of the halogens and are able to reflect light correctly in the reflector housing. A projector style bulb wouldn’t be able to do this and scatter light which can make it look blinding. People will say that LEDs are illegal which they can be in certain areas however they shouldn’t be if the beam pattern is the same as the halogen.
