Mercedes S Class Cabriolet 2019 is it the pinnacle 4 seat convertible?

Mercedes are no stranger to big four-seat convertibles but at its launch in 2014, this S-Class Cabriolet was in fact the first luxury open-topped four seater the brand had produced since 1971. Now it's been improved.
Based on the Mercedes S-Class Coupe, the brand's much improved S-Class Cabriolet model goes up against the likes of the Bentley Continental GT Convertible and other super-luxurious four seat drop-tops.
Background
Mercedes-Benz has a long and rich history of producing open-topped luxury vehicles, with a heritage in making them that goes right back to the 1920s. In more recent years though, the brand has been absent from the large Cabriolet segment, though that changed when this S-Class Cabriolet was launched in 2014, having been previously previewed by the brand's 2006 'Ocean Drive' concept.
Here, we're looking at an updated version of that car which gets an all-new entry-level V8 petrol engine and a visual upgrade, both inside and out. What hasn't changed is the fact that this model remains most definitely the preserve of the wealthy.
Driving Experience
Those hoping to get the relatively sensible V6 diesel or hybrid powertrain in an S-Class Cabriolet will be disappointed. As befits such a luxurious automobile, the base engine is a 4.0-litre twin turbocharged V8 that pumps out a healthy 469bhp in the S560 (up from 455bhp in the previous S500 model). For those that think this may be a little common or just lacking in muscle, there's the Mercedes-AMG S63 Cabriolet. This derivative also features 4.0-litre V8 power, in this case AMG's 612bhp hand-built unit that can still hit 62mph from standstill in 4.2 seconds. If you must have the ultimate, the 630bhp V12 S65 will be the one to have.
Being a German luxury performance car, you'll headbutt the limiter at 155mph although this model would no doubt go considerably faster. Despite the performance, this is no out-and-out sports car so don't expect the last word in feel or feedback or for it to enjoy being hustled along. Sure, it'll get down a twisty road at a fair old lick but it's unlikely you'll feel rewarded by doing it. It's much better to waft along safe in the knowledge that although you could out-drag most cars on the road; you just don't need to prove it.

Always liked the SL, the 4 seater is even better. Like to buy one at the better end of the depreciation curve and find an honest and reliable independent shop to keep it going. Great review, keep up the good work.

Buffeting renders the SL much more tranquil and quieter at speed. This coupe has to much back seat area to best the SL and falls flat top up compared to the SL's better supremely isolated power glass hardtop.

Simply the most comprehensive and thorough review I have seen on ANY car. An absolute triumph for the channel, and demonstrates what must have been weeks of intensive research and planning. Over an hour, and only pauses were to draw breath. The volume of detail, it’s objectivity, honest comparisons, and it’s logical and unbelievably appropriate sequencing provided me with everything I needed to know to make my S-Class Cabriolet purchase. I’m swapping from an S63AMG Coupé and previously owned an S500 Coupé so I’m not new to the 2-door S-Class family having owned these fixed-roof versions for nearly 2 years - but this simply EXTRAORDINARILY comprehensive review had me watching in from start to finish 4 or 5 times over the time it took me to locate my Cavansite (navy blue) and Porcelain (cream) S-Class Cabriolet and provided great reassurance that I was well and truly making the right decision. Well done. Well done. Absolutely amazing - never seen any review like it - Mercedes’ employees themselves would learn from this utterly incredible effort. Wow!!! Thank you SO much!!!!!! Greg

It's my absolut dream car! Great video! Two things though. The grills on the back of the head restraints are not speakers. They are the air inlets for the airscarf. And the magic vision controle is of course not based on the calendar but the temperature outside. Cheers 😉 🤓

On a side note, I much prefer the elegance of the 560 coupe. Convertibles are really not aesthetically appealing imo.

The grill on this video is NOT from the 2019 model but rather earlier I think 2017 and below. I’m just wondering why he doesn’t have the new grille? I love the grill on the video just wondering why
Fast as my E39 M5, rides as smooth as my Alpina B7, drop top aero is better than my Porsche 911. May be the perfect GT cruiser. Cockpit is lavish and seats are incredible.

The finishing touch to this top of the class Mercedes would be to have the Three Star logo at the end of your bonnet as you cruise or speed! Have it with health and safety in mind! Pop up or down just like a Roller or a Bentley design. It is just so special and should be on the end of this beauties bonnet just like all classic Mercs of yore!

Mercedes are discontinuing the S class cabriolet. Sad and we will miss these luxury land yachts. The s63 cabriolet is pure bliss.

Often overlooked there was a Mercedes E320 Cabriolet that was made only two years 1994 and 1995. This was also a four passenger convertible.

This needs a V12 so the S65 or S650 are the ones to look out for. Sadly they are still super expensive. Its like they dont depreciate as they used to. 200-300k still. Where are the times when an V12 S Class fell in value like a rock?

I will take a Mercedes over any British brand. This Mercedes S copue convertible is way better than any Ass-ton Martin. How could any one count on the Brits to build a proper high end convertible when they CAN'T even get their own BREXIT right after so many TRIES?????

I beg to differ with those who believe that these open top (convertibles) are welcome in this day and age. Decapitation took the life of several Hollywood stars (Jane Mansfield & James Dean for starters) & despite technology designed to mitigate this sad but obvious potential, the risk still looms large. For instance, I once avoided buying an open top sports car and instead opted for a new Jaguar E-Type Fixed Head coupe. In truth I doubt that the streamlined roof of the coupe provided a great deal of high strength protection, but it might have made 'the difference' and anyway, was a psychological, appearance and aerodynamic winner which appealed to me as a pilot, schooled in safety first and drag reduction.

Ever heard of a thing called a ROLL BAR? All Mercedes convertibles have them to prevent decapitation. They've had them for a long time but you're not keeping up.
