Mercedes PSE (Door) Vacuum Pump | Soft Close

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this Episode we are fixing the Vacuum Pump that operates the soft close doors. Well, not does it only pull in those heavy doors on the S500 but it also operates the Central Locking System, the automatic flip down headrest, the trunk and convenience handle that ejects during trunk operation and the seat bolsters. Did I forget anything?
The theme of this video was if you don't succeed at first, try again, and one more time after that until we get a working Vacuum Pump from eBay. The Part number that fit our car was 220 800 10 48. The first pump we got was 220 800 03 48. It seems that the second to last set of number dictates the generation. What I have discovered is that that number must be equal or higher to what is originally in your car or it won't work. I would highly recommend to just match the numbers exactly to avoid any headaches

    LOVE your organized work bench. The most important and critical part of any kind of repair comes down to your work space, tools, and being organized (Knowing where your tools are and having flexibility like short hand ratchet tools, extensions that are flexible, all the ETorx tools / sockets you need for mercedes, which for me has mainly been E10, E12, E16 sockets), and more

  • @Turbo_Snail

    I wish I had more space. I try to make due with what I got. One thing I found is that the extension ratchet is irreplaceable for me and that I need better quality etorx bits. More and more cars are using these now, Mercedes used it 20 years ago. The new tool box however made a big difference for me. First time I had one that size. I love it.

    If you DO get stuck with a new-used replacement that is incompatible, take heart. If the motors are the same, you may be able to swap them out. It may just be that the replacement has a controller that is incompatible. Best advice what TS said--get the same part number and a guarantee.

    I watched this video 2 years ago to replace my PSE Vacuum pump on my 2006 S500. I replaced it with a pump I bought on Ebay for $185, with the exact part number 220 800 11 48 [07] and it worked for 2 years before I had to replace it again. That one has now failed so I had to replace it again. They didn't have an 220 800 11 48 but I understand that going with a higher part number works and the only one that was higher was a 220 800 12 48 [06]. So a 12 can replace an 11. This one cost me $70 more than my first one, but it was the only one that was available at the time with a higher part number. It works now.

    That sucks that it only lasted 2 years. Thats the reason I like to replace with new or remanufactured. However, this pump is just too expensive new that's why I did the whole eBay thing. Yes, from what I understand you can go with a newer pump (higher number), but not lower. The only way to make that work is a "proxy alignment". Not sure what that involves but it sounds expensive. I hope this one lasts a lot longer than the last one.

    Thanks for the video. I have an s600 my trunk isn't shutting and the soft door close also inop, yet my locks do go up and down. I wanted to comment on the black dust on the motor, it's the carbon electrodes at the stator to the armature are worn down, if you took the little motor apart and put in new brushes a few bucks. Harvest out of some home vacuum or find on ebay or something, they are often made of carbon and can be easily filed into shape. Keep up the good work.

  • @Turbo_Snail

    @Turbo_Snail

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thank you. Yes I noticed when I blew the dust out I got a few more weeks of service before it finally completely died. On S600, maybe you got a leak in the hoses themselves? That pump operates locks and soft close. If the locks would have worked, I would have not changed the pump. But once the locks died I had no other choice. Disconnect the lines in the back. If you have a friend who vapes, blow some smoke into the system and see where it leaks. When I blew into the hoses with my mouth, I was able to lock the doors. My trunk hoses are bad and I do not have soft close there. Maybe one day in the future I’ll make a video of that, but it’s not on top of my priority. Thanks for watching and the kind words :)

    Even though your locks didnt actuate, you still dont have to use the metal key. Lock the 3 non driver doors from the inside, roll down your driver's door, reach in and lock the drivers door, now point your fob at the infrared and push and hold the lock button on the fob. To unlock, do the opposite. The trunk is the biggest hassle.

    Oh man that blows. Are you sure it’s electrical. How did you test the pump? Is it just one door that doesn’t lock or all of them. Maybe one of the hoses cracked and won’t allow to produce a vacuum. You can blow some smoke thru the hoses and see if it escapes somewhere. I hope you find the issue.

    Hi, my dad's 2004 S430 has this PSE PUMP problem, I think. I'm trying to determine whether to test for a leak in a line (how do you tell where the smoke comes out if the lines are all inside the walls of the car?) or just replace the PSE Pump. I'm wondering if a leak is unlikely if the remote control and interior auto unlock buttons do not work for both the trunk and the car doors? Since there are multiple issues does that make a leak less likely? Also, I believe the yellow fuse is blown. To hear the clicking noise in the pump does the key have to be in the car or does the car have to be running? Finally, for the part number "220 800 xx 48" does the xx represent the year of the car? I thought it did until I see in the posts and also on pumps for sale on ebay that the xx does not seem to be the year of the car? So I have to get at that pump first to get the part number, specifically the xx numbers? Thanks!

  • @Turbo_Snail

    @Turbo_Snail

    Жыл бұрын

    Honestly you gotta have to diagnose one at a time. If you hear clicking you need a new pump. If you keep replacing the fuse, you need a new pump. If you have a line leak it will impact only whatever is connected to that line. There is a smoke machine for that purpose. You blow smoke in and eventually you see it coming out from behind a panel possible. Then you can take it apart and follow the smoke. Sealing a line shouldn’t be too hard. That being said, Mercedes from that vintage usually doesn’t have line problems but rather electrical. I would usually start diagnosing electrical stuff. In regards to the number, follow my instructions. Read more in the description. It must be the same or newer. Hope you get it sorted, good luck.

    Sounds like your PSE pump is dead. Use the video as a reference it will fix your issue. The seats use a different system. The PSE takes care of the soft close doors and trunk, central locking system and it releases the headrests. Some people had good success parting out that box and replacing the insides, I would get a refurbished unit if I had to do it again but a used one should work just as well.

I took the shroud off to look but you are looking at a whole assembly. If you suspect a leak other than that, take apart the pump. Get a friend who smokes or vapes and have him blow smoke thru the lines. If there is a leak, it will come out places it shouldn’t. Why when you had the pump out, you didn't you find which component is leaking air? You will be spending another $200 in a couple weeks, unless you just spend $35 and replace that motor that will keep burning up also in 2 weeks. Your seat air bladders probably leaking and are causing your pump motor to run constantly. Disconnect them and block them off, probably along with those door close actuators if you can shut them without them. This might just be your problem.

  • @Turbo_Snail

    @Turbo_Snail

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your concern, however, if the car detects that a zone is running too long without a confirmation of a door closure for example, the car will then shut off that zone to prevent pump damage. That being said. This video is now over a year old and the pump is pumping just fine. The pump was old, 15 years old to be exact. Parts wear out. I've seen cars with 10 years on them and all components work, yet the pump just had it. The only zone that leaks is the trunk and that shut itself off the same day we installed the pump. Now we don't have soft close on the trunk anymore. Not worth fixing to be honest. If you have the MBII computer, you can go in there and reactivate any zone that has been shut down manually. Or, just disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes... after reconnect they should all come alive again. Happy wrenching!

    there is cheaper and much better way to repair this failure. The reason pneumatic pump stopped working and behavior are typical , inside the module there is electric motor and attached vacuum module with graphite rotator and blades. With time, graphite is weared out , and around every 200 000 km it start breaking apart, and finally lock the possibility of rotation, ti is easy to repair. Clicking sound is the engine trying to move , but physically locked and freezed by broken graphite rotor. All you need to do is replace the graphite rotor and graphite blades bought for about 60$ as "w220 central lock repair kit". That guarantee another 200 000 km of work, unlike buying another used module, which can break after few houndred uses. There is also another typical failure, after about 600 000km , the brushes inside electrical motor need to be replaced then . It is also simple repair ,and cost even less money. Module that you bought is probably already regenerated, it has been serviced and probably has changed graphite elements - that suggest a sticker on a side.
