This engine works in the dmu series 628.4 of the german railway (DB) too. There it has 448 kW / 660 hp.

20l V12.. so nothing special here, infact kind of poor result. Example, Scania V8 16.4l and 730hp / 2581lb Merc makes these huge engine with kind of low output.

thats is exactly what they did! I work with this engines as emergency generators, and nerver saw one of the OM 400 or 440 series engine blow up or even having some sort of problem after 20-30 years of service. freaking tanks!!
