Mercedes ML SUV W163 sunroof leak fixed!!

ML 350 sunroof drain clogged and caused a crazy leak inside the car. After the fox I've been lucky and have had no leaks but some one posted in the comments below that they had a leak and suggested to secure the new hose with silicone around it so the water doesn't seep in the cabin from above. I will definitely try to do so myself as it does seems like a smarter way to fix. once done I will update the video accordingly. Incase someone is looking for the size of the hose, it's 13mm. Thanks for watching!

Not too mention, creating a damp/wet environment inside the fusebox, fostering corrosion in the fuse-plug connectors, and causing electrical shorts which then lead to malfunctioning accessories, misfires, stalling, power loss etc etc. Real genius design work by MB.

👍 ciao, I have been lucky and haven't had any leak after this fix but one of the guys posted here that applying silicone around the new hose would be best because he ended up water leaking from above. I would suggest that if you do open and do the job then please apply silicone around the new pipe at the outlet hole in the fender. Once I get a chance I will open up the fender and do the same thing myself and then update the video. Good luck and enjoy the beast !!

You also need to clean the canal around the sunroof. There are 2 small holes toward the front and the dirt could clog them up easily.

Greetings from Central Europe. Did you check the drain from the engine compartment? The latter is the most common cause of wet carpets, as it clogs most often, but there is no problem with cleaning. Then the roof as shown in the video. I would just like to point out that you must have both drains from the roof functional (it is left and right = that means both fenders down, if the drain on the driver's side is also clogged. First, try to blow through and check whether both hoses seal well at the beginning at the roof. In two cases it leaked water through a leaky front window. The last possibility is connected to the loss of water in the cooling circuit - the radiator is leaking. I did not encounter this with the ML, but it is a common problem with the Audi. A friend also cleaned both drains from the roof, including the drain in the engine, and the situation improved significantly but it didn't go away. One hose from the roof had about a 20cm crack and was leaking water :). Elsewhere, water cannot get on the carpet, unless you have a piece of the floor missing....

The issue I see is your connector now reduces your drain flow . I had the same problem on my 99 ml. These grommets sometimes shrink or retract back into the frame causing blockage as well. I pulled the grommet out a little over frame and now no more problems. Hopefully you're reduced connection doesn't cause problems for you... good luck. Always use compressed air first before you start pulling on these hoses.

Hi Draghi, there are two drain holes in the sunroof. If you open the sunroof and look inside you'll see two holes (towards the front) on each side. I had water leak only on the right side so I opened that side only. You might have sediments in the pipes which is not letting water drain downwards properly and that is probably what is flooding into your roof liner I suspect. If I was you I would run a wire on each side to make sure they are clear so the water is not pooling and go from there! Hope it works for you.👍

If the ceiling is wet, your window is probably leaking. Try a simple trick. When you close the window, close it from the ventilation. That is, close, open the vent and close the vent. This will extend its life by a few years before it needs to be resealed

Congratulations, you've traded one leak for a different one. You see that square opening above where you pulled the elbow out? That's the cowl drain. Unless that elbow seals *perfectly*, you'll get a ton of water in the floorboard. Ask me how I know. If anyone wants to know how to fix this PROPERLY, you can look up my thread under the name Sam Cogley in the W163 form at BenzWorld.

@@gasNgears If you're not getting any water in through those holes now when it rains, you may want to check to make sure that your cowl drains aren't completely clogged with debris. I can think of a few ways to possibly make your idea of extending the hose through the side of the cowl without the elbow work, but they would involve repurposing grommets from elsewhere on a W163 - most likely sourced from a junkyard. The grommets used for the electrical wires for the 1998-2001 side markers would be my first choice to experiment with, followed by the heavy grommets used to hold down things like the washer tank and air filter box. There are probably other suitable parts, You'd just have to look around. The key would be to find something to make a good, tight fit in the hole in the side of the cowl and that could be modified to pass the hose with a tight fit. The fix I came up with was to use new sections of heater hose, with hose clamps at the sunroof barbs, and a brass or nylon hose repair barb connecting the hose to the elbow with a hose clamp on each side of the barb. I think I used one with two different sizes that's made for joining dissimilar sized hoses to account for the fact that the elbow is designed to have the hose slide into it, which is why they're notorious for popping apart if the drain gets even a little bit clogged. The issue of water ingress around that grommet is especially important on 2000-2005 models with the secondary fuse panel in the kick panel. They're notorious for getting water in them and causing corrosion and electrical gremlins, as the panel and the wiring running to it are right under the hole for the sunroof drain. Besides water, you've also opened a path for insects and dirt to get inside. Something else to think about. I swapped out the elbows on my 2002 with a pair from a 2005 (the design changed to make the grommet a better seal), and after the first hard rain I was amazed by how much water came in from the grommet seal being disrupted by just a tiny bit of old rubber from the original elbow stuck to the steel under the edge of the grommet. A whole lot of water should be moving through those cowl drains.

@@SamCogley much appreciate the info mate. I'll definitely look into getting the parts sussed first and film/ edit, once I have done the fix as you've suggested. I guess I have been very lucky so far as Vancouver is one of the most wet places but should stop relying on luck and prevent the leak before it occurs. Cheers

@@gasNgears Good luck, I'm glad you haven't had a bunch of water ingress so far! When you do get a fix to close the holes around the tubing, make sure you check those cowl drains to make sure they're flowing properly. If they're clogged with debris, it's going to cause all kinds of trouble down the road. FYI, as far as I can tell, your guess about keeping insects out of the tubing is a good one regarding the "closed duck bill" outlet that opens up under water pressure. The 1998-99 version of the elbow had an open end with just a "duck bill" type flange molded in at each end, presumably to direct water out and over that body stamping just below the outlet. They went to the closed style with the smaller grommet flange to the outside in 2000, and I'm not sure when they switched the larger grommet flange to the outside to improve the sealing against the outside of the body. Sometime after 2002 is all I know - I only caught onto it because I pulled a pair of them off a 2005 to replace a damaged one on my 2002, and grabbed both just in case. Obviously some engineer at Mercedes was struggling throughout the life of the W163 to figure out how to keep those sunroof drains working right and not leaking water into the interior.
