There is a version of the antenna case that used plastic barbs (about 10), instead of the center screw. A small screwdriver and needle nose pliers makes fast work of getting the housing apart. Inside you will find a washer/keeper and a C-clip holding the gear and antenna tail gear housing. Also, in my case the clutch failed. Take it apart, and you will see a broken stand off that stops the spring inside. Easy fix with a #6 x 3/8 countersunk wood screw and epoxy. The stop fits nicely between the hole (that needs countersinking with a knife, and the center drum. Also, I recommend hand driving the antenna into the mechanism by hand the first time. Rotate the drive belt gear and pull it in. I had two fails due the the speed of the threading into the tail receiver and had to pull it out of the car a second time. Great video, thank you.

Thanks for the video. I'm going to install a Hirschmann Hit Auta 5900 in my 1976 Mercedes 280SE, but the manual does not mention the relay model to be used. Do you know which relay should I use?

awesome video, for about 10 yrs, ive been dealing with an antenna that only 3 out of the 4 parts come up and it would never fully retract, one section, the 2nd largest would alway stick up. so i removed the mast from the top and tried polishing and unsticking the metal mast but i noticed i didnt have the beveled tip of the mast any more, so i took apart the unit as u did but i cant seem to find the broken part at all.....its not in the back or front side of the white wheel or the other side.... i cant seem to see it in the tube area either...what else could it be

I would expect the broken part to be somewhere in the antenna housing. You could try replacing just the antenna mast. They are fairly inexpensive.

well i hoping just to lube it up and be able to use what i have, but i figure it probably stopped fully retracting was because of the broken plastic mast....i first thought it was just some corrosion along that one section of the metal portion. .....that is loosened up now but yeah with the broken tip, i can get it go back in when i turn the key off, so yeah i guess no choice, i have to buy a new one... honestly i was hoping not to have to take unit out of car, but to find the broken section i guess i will have to

The three areas I would check first is the antenna mast connection to internal wiring from the antenna mast to the module, the module on the antenna itself (I have never opened it so I do not know if it has active or passive components) and the connectors/cables from the antenna unit to the car.

It is likely that the tip of the plastic that guides the antenna mast through the mechanism is broken. You would have to open it to confirm, remove the broken piece and replace with a new antenna mast. I hope this helps.

felipesilvausa I did not have to fix anything electrical and did not look into the wiring of the antenna. Hopefully someone else can help with the diagram.

    So what did you repair?

I replaced the broken antenna mast. Check the 2 min 56 sec mark where it will show you where the antenna mast broke. It is a simple repair if that is all that you need to replace. If you have water damage or corrosion in the mechanism, it can get a bit harder to find the parts and repair it.

if your antenna doesn't even move then your relay is bad. It's an easy 1 minute swap. you can find it on ebay.

Ugh don’t do what this guy did and lubricate you antenna mast with WD-40. It gets into the motor and eventually gets on the belt and causes it to slip. Plus it’s not a good lubricant! Only use the lubricant made by hirschman. It’s more like a thin grease. But don’t use wd-40 or anything petroleum based for lubricant. If the mast starts to bind up or stick use 0000 steel wool to polish it up, then wipe clean with paper towel, then apply hirschman specified antenna lube.

There was no WD40 used in the video. Beyond that, great recommendations.
