Why should i buy a hybrid. Can only choose between a bad battery and motor whit a heavy engine+tank or an range extander which is going bad from under use and huge maintainance anyways Its not like whit a GAS car that you have a tiny 2g (10l) tank and the same engine does its work

Autoline TV is based in Michigan, and all of its sponsors are related to the internal combustion engine (ICE) industry. It's understandable that the show may not be enthusiastic about technologies that could make the jobs of their personal friends and colleagues obsolete. However, given Jim Farley's interview on July 5th where he acknowledged that Ford will be dead if they don't find a way to manufacture battery electric vehicles (BEVs) profitably, I now believe the future of BEVs is certain.

Just excuses for their poor planning. These legacy vehicle makers are suddenly realizing that all their battery efforts become obsolete even before they go into production. The technology is moving too quickly and they can't keep up. Production facilities are not research facilities. This equation will change once battery technologies settle down, maybe in a decade or so, but in the mean time car makers really just have to buy the Chinese cells and convince governments that tariffs are counter-productive at the current juncture. -Matt

I find it interesting how Autoline uses the legacy auto phrase lag of EV demand, when the best selling car in the world is an EV. What do you think will happen when Tesla introduces a $25K EV or if the Chinese was allowed to import their EVs, I would think the demand would increase dramatically. My suggestion to a better description of the state of affairs for EV's is "There is a lack of price competitive EV's in many segments".

Not some V8 forever type of guy but from my understanding Tesla sales are slowing. Their models are still the top tier but the growth is slowing. And they have put the idea of a 25k EV on halt last I heard but the industry always goes back a forth. I think the biggest issue facing Tesla is their aging models. The Model 3 and Y are ancient and the I think making a better interior instead of taking away more features would help them attract more buyers. And I think the R&D that went into the Cybertruck should have went to a said 25k EV crossover or a larger third row CUV. Just my opinion.

@@baronvonjo1929 Good opinions. As to the models, indeed they are slow but that's part of how they can be profitable when others are losing gobs of money or barely squeeking by. However, right now all of Tesla is concentrating on Robo-taxi where the margins are insane. For example, Tesla makes around $4,000 on a car sale right now. A robo-taxi charging only half the price of an Uber/mile and only used 50% of a day would, after maintenance and cleaning expenses, produce around $10,000 of net profit per year! If the car can be used for five years that's $50,000 profit per car. More than a 12X increase in profit per vehicle. Tesla management would be negligent to their stock holders if they did not pursue that full on.

BYD sneaking in through Turkey is a clever move. BYD is also looking into Mexico. They will eventually be competing duty free in Europe and Central/South America. Eventually the incumbents will have to face them. A CNG motorcycle is amazing. Half the fuel cost will be very welcome in many urban environments, where fuel costs can be $8/gallon... cutting that in half is a blessing, and the option of gasoline in a pinch is a very clever trick, because CNG fill ups are not always around. Stellantis have been making very mild hybrid vehicles for a few years. It's getting to the stage where only Hybrids and Electric vehicles will be available for sale globally in roughly ten years into the future which is no surprise. Even though Lithium-ion batteries are getting better the change to Solid-State batteries is definitely needed. My opinion is Hydrogen is not a suitable fuel for trucks and cars especially after watching a Toyota refueling in California but has a role in many other applications. People do realise that if a RAV4 Hybrid can do 700 miles on a tank of E10 fuel then how much further would a diesel Hybrid travel? We all understand that the percentage of power produced by fossil fuels in the USA is still in excess of 50% which makes the push for net Zero seem like a joke at the present time. 😎🇦🇺

It's too bad humans just don't seem to take the long road into account but instead try short term gains at the cost of efficiency and conservation. Until the batteries get smaller and lighter weight then the whole EV market is just upside down. How does it make any sense at all to increase the weight of a low energy density platform? Model Y is now the best selling vehicle in the world (ICE or EVs). The Cybertruck now outsells the Ford F150 Lightning. And they have far more in the pipeline. Tesla sells more EVs in North America than every one else combined. Only stock shorters are foolish enough to bet against Tesla. It's estimated they have lost close to $100B! I may be wrong and I would like to read your arguments: 1. Most EV’s have a range of over 300 miles. 2. What is the range of a hybrid? 3. How often do you travel over 300 miles in a day? 4. The ICE engine in a hybrid requires service, oil changes etc. 5. Either get an ICE vehicle or an EV. The market place says I am wrong.

It is a stepping stone to being electrified, a way for legacy auto to keep making ICE but has its complications by having two types motive power,Many Chinese auto companies have decided to KISS, go only BEV and they have the right idea.

Now MB wants to make batteries? I’m sorry, but I have as much faith in that as I do a gardener turned brain surgeon. Regardless of price, it will be an inferior product. Rather than jumping on every bandwagon that passes by, I think Mercedes (and the German auto industry as a whole) should take a page out of Toyota’s playbook: stay the course, remain focused on, and just keep advancing what they do best - bending metal and mechanical engineering. Leave the software development, electrical engineering, and battery chemistry, to the Americans and the Chinese. They have the experience, they have the data, they have the assets, the funding, the support, and they have the capacity to supply the entire world’s demand; there’s little doubt they do it best. So just collaborate, partner, and trade with them for what you need, but don’t try to be them… that will never work.

Mercedes is no different than other legacy carmakers - they designed a whole slew of EVs that were ugly and no one wanted them. Buyers of expensive luxury cars want them to look cool, exciting and fancy and none of the Merc EVs achieved that - so the rich folk didn't buy them. Same as the Ford and Chevy pickups - too expensive and not much value compared to exisiting models. Make cars people want to buy and then maybe you can use all that battery manufacturing capacity. Oh is anyone surprised that status seeking rich people don't care about producing less carbon in their lives?

And so it begins. Mercedes is backing off on batteries so they can take advantage of the glut of batteries on the market. Meanwhile it is lagging in getting its own battery production up and running. Mercedes is making the wrong decisions in order to maximize profit in the short term. Soon they will be caught with their pants down when the battery market tightens up again as China makes more and more EVs for export. Mercedes needs to go all EV as petrol stations are closing through lack of demand throughout much of the EU. In three years it will be more difficult to find petrol and the price will have sky rocketed as refineries will stop making it or will raise their prices considerably to make their margins. Rinse and Repeat. Soon Mercedes will realize that they must go all EV but won't be able to get enough batteries because of their short sighted decisions today.
