Mercedes Digital Light Test: COULD VIDEO PROJECTOR HEADLIGHTS SAVE YOUR LIFE??

Mercedes Digital Light Test 2023
Welcome to my latest video where I dive deep into the technical details of the Mercedes Digital Light system, tested in the Mercedes EQE 500 electric SUV.
As a seasoned reporter on headlight performance from the heart of Northern Ontario’s Moose Country, I’ve been consistently impressed by the night drive experience delivered by Mercedes across a wide range of price points and vehicles.
In this video, I’ll be sharing my experience with the new EQE, its miles of glossy screens, ambient lighting, and the Mercedes Digital Lights. These are not just headlights, they’re more like video projectors, with three extremely powerful LEDs controlled by 1.3 million micro-mirrors.

02:33 Mercedes Digital Light Animations in Action
03:54 Mercedes EQE 500 SUV Interior / Night Drive Walkaround

I’ll also be discussing the advanced functionalities of this lighting system, including its ability to check mapping and elevation data based on GPS and optimize the forward lighting.
Inside the EQE, you’ll find most of the dashboard is a glossy screen. After dark, you’ll appreciate the clean and sharp graphics with minimized light leakage from unlit pixels and a really vivid display that doesn’t strain your eyes, even at full illumination. You can switch the central and passenger side screens off if you like and set the instruments to a minimal display, or light things up with a more dynamic-looking display mode and turn up the volume on the color-changing interior LEDs.
The responsive touch-screen and zero-layer interface means that virtually any function you’re likely to be using at any specific situation is on screen with its own button, no need to dig through multiple layers. This latest infotainment system even learns locations where I commonly open the trunk, and displays a trunk release on the touch-screen for me.

Those headlights are absolutely awesome. A system like that has the potential to allow for brighter and better focused headlights without blinding people. North America laws are so out of touch and behind the times with technology it’s painfully hilarious. Also I had to crack up at the “psycho-wagon” comment. Those cars are truly crazy and for anyone that wants a sports car but needs a wagon that’s as close as one can get to that.

Great video! Love the advanced lighting technologies. These need to be applied to almost all new cars. As we get older these advanced systems makes the night drives way less stressful in moose country nighttime driving. Great video Justin!

Good job Mercedes. Generally their European experience is also well adapted for optimum highway adaption. I am not a fan for excessive animation. But for my own night time safety they outperporm just about anything else on the road.

Good job at copying... All these features can be found in many Chinese electric car like for example the HiPhi X which was released 3 years ago.

It’s crazy that North America’s headlight laws are so antiquated. I believe they’ve recently been changed. I hope automakers can now bring over the full functionality of these advanced headlight systems. Great review as always, Justin!

NHTSA has recently allowed ADB high beam, but it keeps the antiquated maximum luminous intensity of high beam as 75kcd(210kcd in ECE region). The European variant of this headlight actually reaches the 210kcd limit in the center of view(HV point), when all the high beam modules(Matrix high beam as the basic part of the high beam, Pixel high beam and the spotlight high beam) are turned simultaneously.

We have terribly outdated lighting laws in Canada and, unfortunately, Transport Canada can no longer pass standards for our own home market, independent of the United States. Let's face it - for decades European manufactures have been well ahead of North America with lighting developments. These M-B lights are a great step forward and I hope to see more use of them on Canadian roads. And speaking of lighting standards - don't even get me started on that uniquely stupid North American phenomenon of red rear turn signals...

Don't worry, the cost of matrix headlight(formally ADB headlight) is being drastically reduced. The car makers pays only 150~200 dollars to the supplier for the whole assembly of a low-end matrix headlight.
