True- but in my opinion- what really made the original DTM series popular with the masses was the fact that you could go and buy the same cars at the dealership that were on the track racing. Of course they were modified versions- but the original series rules dictated that no body modifications could be made- so if rear downforce was needed on the track- a functional wing had to come on the production model. If brake cooling was needed on the track- it had to be present on the production model. If wider tires were needed on the track, the fenders had to be wide enough on the production model to accommodate them. All of the iterations of the series that followed allowed the cars to change so substantially from the production model that they were not close enough to be considered the same, and that removes the car-buying public even further. It's funny to think that Nascar started out using production cars. Now the only thing that is (or was) similar between a Nascar race car and it's production namesake is the engine block.

@@arau8310 Race homologation cars were always the coolest. It is why I am in love with the GR Yaris right now. It's a pocket rocket. And it is fairly affordable for the tech you get. I can't understand how so many people fail to understand that. Only see it is tiny and dismiss it. Love it when people I know get a i30N which is SLIGHTLY more affordable. But can't even compare in performance.

The reason why I like the old DTM is that the cars had homologation cars that were more affordable than GT3 and the cars looked much more like the cars you bought.

I think that was the main reason for its popularity. You could visit a race with cool locking cars, a lot of noise and race action and the other day you see the more civilized versions of those race cars all over the streets.

That is what BTCC and later WTCC/TCR doing. And this recipes is pretty much most tourning car race used across Eurasia. The DTM is more lax on modification. This result in more expensive operation cost. On the other hand, the WTCC base racings have very strict modification rule. One of the sort of extreme I know was the CTCC back then in mainland China. I read the rule, and I recall there is not much can be done on the engine. Other than fooling around the intake, exhaust fuel map and can open/close timing and angle. That is it. Yes, there is planty can be done on chassis, suspension and gear box. But with the restriction on engine. The overall return from other modification deminish. This strick limitations were not relax till TCR and the return of force intake. Which playing with the boost can gain lot of power. But that also some how restrain by the restrictor.

German motor manufacturing is the Apple Computer of the car world. They steal and re-brand as much as they can and sue everyone for the rest. German cars are "well built" - total BS. Eight of the top ten unreliable cars in Europe are German. Six of those are Mercedes.

First of all I totally understand where your coming from, second of all you don't need to, Jason Cammisa (Journalist for Hagerty) owns a 2.3-16v Cosworth and multiple E30s, he has more knowledge and experience than the both of us combined and he says the same thing, and has demonstrated it a number of times in different ways, his main example is the level of sound deadening and how its applied in the cars, with the Merc its multiple layers all cut neatly so that it fits together and then underneath all of it are all the wires for the car, for the E30 its basically one thin strip of sound deadening, and yet the 190E weighs less than the E30... I'll see if I can find the video where he shows it, its super interesting. @@luukvanoijen7082

It's been said alot the E30 M3 was the meat winningest car, the 190E was the coolest car in DTM

The problem with DTM currently is the GT3 regulations it has adapted, it is now lost in a ever increasing sea of other GT3 races out there and there is nothing for fans to really get to grips with. What it really needs to do is go back to being a Touring car race again using cars are anyone can go to the showroom and buy, fit out for racing and have a damn good time with.

I dont get why Albon doesn't have at least 1M subs, the effort behind each video is insane, from the scriptwriting, the storytelling, gathering the clips and giving credits to each one, audio mixing, color grading, finding music that fits the vibe, sound effects and vfx. Usually I see mistakes in videos like a pointless sfx, missing titles, or a subtitle that shouldn't be there, but in Albon videos I don't see any mistake, the attention to detail is mesmerizing.

born in '76 i grew up in that great golden era of true cars and crazy racing, especially Rallye-sports was everywhere back then. So basically i'd tend to agree to what you wrote - if looking on 'normal' big volume production cars. But on the other hand, don't forget about Porsche, they never stopped to develop and build a whole bunch of real & track ready race cars in several classes. Yes, they're pretty pricey, but if one has the 250k for a 911 GT3 RS (just for example) then one gets pure racing on highest level.

my Dad and grandpa taking me see DTM at Zolder as a 5y old was what got me into cars, loved everything about it !

Nothing will ever top late 90s JGTC for me. Seeing race bred GTRs, Supra etc taking on Porsches, Bimmers, Ferraris etc was so crazy for the 5 year old me.

@@bzilla1090big difference between JGTC and JTCC fwiw. Also BMW couldn’t hold a candle to the Skylines or Sierras in JTCC but they raced in a different class(which they had no real competitors in).

I love all the German DTM cars but the Alfa 155 with the V6 lives rent free in my head. Best car ever. Won instantly the Tourenwagen Meisterschaft in '93

As a German i really appreciate your Research into this and some of the Footage you found without speaking German. Also the History-related Banter is great! Don't ever stop with that and i like that you at least try to learn to pronounce Names & Words instead of just saying/reading it as a lot of American Car KZreadrs do. Your Pronounciation is really good and caught me off guard Hope to see more Videos from you in the Future, especially related to German Cars and History as it's not covered enough Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps

BTCC in the UK and SuperTouring in France in the 80's and 90's was also completely bananas. They were racing homologation specials from almost every manufacturer out there, going at it like total maniacs, sometimes even ending up in fisticuffs after they crashed. Those 2 decades were the golden era of Touring Cars, the teams had budgets nearly approaching F1 levels and increasing steadily year after year until it just got to a point where it didn't make sense to keep spending all that money just to go racing.

First, the Tom's Castrol turned yellow, now the Merc! It's an epidemic!

To add some context: Group A rules heavily favoured big displacement cars such as the Audi V8 or the Ford Sierra (1.4 turbo factor). DTM was one of the only Group A series trying to BOP these cars by also limiting tyre width, custom ballast and restrictors but even then the smaller displacement cars still had a massive disadvantage. The FIA regulations including Group A ran out in 1992 and werent replaced by anything resulting in many series having to make up their own regulations and series. Mercedes, Alfa and Opel decided to move to Class 1 while BMW and Audi moved to the Class 2 rules which were much closer to the preceeding Group A rules. This rift in manufacturer interest resulted in Class 1 slowly dying out and Class 2 (super touring) flourishing into the great BTCC / STW / WTCC / ETCC era. By the late 90s the GT and Sportscar world also recovered from the inital shock of the regulations runnning out in 1992 which also drew away manufacturer interest. I also believe this is what happened to the new Class 1 DTM, Mercedes left for the new and exciting Formula E, Audi was already in FE now having to compete against another manufacturer. Its similar to how they all pulled out of Formula E in order for Mercedes to focus on the then new F1 regulations and Audi preparing their F1 entry. BMW probably would have pulled out of DTM too in order to prepare their GTP car. German touring car racing always had an interesting history, starting as simple, close to production cars and escalating into silhouette cars with ever increasing costs resulting in manufacturers backing out and cars becoming simpler again. It started when Group 4 Porsches and Group 2 BMWs and Fords were all fighting for the DRM championship in 1972-1976, with the regulation change in 1976 they decided to move to Group 5 silhouette cars moving away from the simpler group 2 and 4 cars. Porsche already backed out in 1978 after winning the WSC twice in a row, Ford and BMW continued their battle resulting in the Zakspeed Capri and BMW M1 and after the regulation change in 1982 they decided to go a step further and use Group C prototypes. BMW backed out immediatley focussing on their F1 engine program and the Ford C100 was a failure resulting in the death of the DRM. It was replaced by the Group A DTM (were back to production based cars) and escaleted into Class 1. With the demise of Class 1 were again back to production based Class 2 cars in the STW. A couple seasons in, the cost is rising and in 2000 they decide to ditch the STW and revive the Class 1 DTM and now were back to silhouette cars again. Rinse and repeat.

You should cover BTCC! The 90's era BTCC was WILD racing. A LOT of bumping and pushing, like the early DTM days before things got outrageous.

90's DTM will forever be my favorite race series. Thats the reason I own an Audi and BMW. Nothing better than DTM.

Especially BMW with the M3 winning 7 JTTC-2 titles in a row and the M635ci and Ford with the Sierra Cosworth at the top. And again in the mid nineties when they decided to compete it was McLaren BMW and Porsche putting the Japanese to the sword.

@@bzilla1090 you are mixing things up, the GT300 (Former GT2) class) where some Porsches took part and won a few seasons but not many, it was the only class with German cars participating, but in the GT500 class the McLaren was the only not Japanese car that won 1 championship but most of the championships where won by the Skyline and the in second the Supra. Yep that series where Ferrari F40's and Diablos raced. Even the McLarens couldn't repeat their win. Remember JGTC started in 1993. You are talking about the Japanese Touring Car championship from 1985-1993 which was also dominated by Nissan in the higest JTC-1 Class with 5 championships and 6 Drivers championships. In lower JTC-2 class the E30 M3 dominated ... as it was the only car racing for many years xD but kudos to BMW, it just was by far the best car in the class ... the JTC-3 class was again dominated by Honda. Also in the 90's in the GT300 class the Porsches like the GT3R and the RSR where beaten by Nissan Silvias and MR2's even Porsche was heavily involved as Japan was the biggest markets for them after the US and Europe.

@@binskee677 yes I was referring to the JTC series initially, and when referring to the McLaren team we're talking about proper McLaren entries, not the ones driven by those Japanese "enthusiasts" of Team Take One, the Team Lark McLaren team wit Brabham and Schumacher. Which was their first and last official outing winning the title, the Team Take One team were basically a bunch of amateurs. Also most of those Ferrari guys were amateur racers too, except for the time they had one of the worst drivers ever piloting the F355 in Taki Inoue. You should always check if it's a works team or privateers most of those guys in old supercars were privateer hobbyists.

@@bzilla1090 True but all teams in JGTC were professional teams, amateur teams could never afford JGTC GT500 classes but yea works teams have an edge, thats true. The F40 barely was able to end a race though, the italians were just too unreliable but would have had great performance. Glad you agree on the rest :)

During the Group 5 era only once a Ford won the championship. That was in 1981. Other than that, 77 = Loos-Porsche, 78 = Schnitzer-BMW, 79 = Kremer-Porsche, 80 = GS-Lancia.

Tons of people loved those old Group C races. Shit, that's where Michael Schumacher got his start. Those cars were insanely awesome.

Mercedes won my heart with the 190e Evolution II. By the time it came out, I was young but aware enough to fall in love with cars. I didn't know German (well, I still don't lol) but I got the chance to watch some DTM and that was the end of it for me

Great video, entertaining and interesting, but what really stoked me and made me follow your channel now and write this comment is your pronounciation skills of the german words and terms you used in the video, honestly, you did absolutely great and amazing on that. Chapeau. As a german i know about the difficulties for english, french or any other native tongues to pronounce german words correct. There's an endless amount of hard-to-learn-because-not-logic hooks and traps in german pronounciation, and you did absolutely great. Impressive.

DTM in the 90s was the SHIT! It was the hardest and most interesting racing series ever... everyone had a knife between their teeth and no car was unharmed after the race!!! Since the glory days of DTM battles I never got so much into any other racing series! Always on Sunday at 3SAT at my grandparents house, commented by the legendary Rainer Braun I watched these gladiators fight! It will not get any better than that! 🤘🤘🤘

In spite of all the changes DTM has gone through, its always been about what german engineering has to offer. GT3 still fulfills that objective, even if its a global platform.

Some of the technology in German touring car was more advanced than formula 1... Such as,,, there was a moveable weight in the chassis that would move forward and back, satellite controlled depending on where you were in the inside of the corner,, to hold the car down on the track...

I managed to catch DTM in its last 6-7 years or so... Those cars were just F1 cars with a shell resembling a stock car, the sound, the power and the aero were insane

For me, as a German who grew up in the era of DRM and such, I must say: you saved my day! I hadn't had flashbacks like today in ages, reminiscing about one of the best times of my life! I was still a child when Group 5 experienced its heyday with the BMW 2002, Ford Capri Turbo, or the BMW 323i. Or the M1, Porsche 935 Kremer... Carrera 911 RSR Div 1, BMW 2800 Div1. From then on, my interest in motorsports continued to grow. Group C was personally the absolute pinnacle in motorsports for me. When the DTM emerged, later evolved into the ITC, and a few years later returned to the DTM, I was crazy about everything with four wheels that appeared on television. I've been to so many race events that I've lost count, just to see these cars. My fondest memory is still the day in 2017 when I stood in the pit with Klaus Ludwig, Erich & Peter Zakowski, Hans-Joachim Stuck, and many other giants of the sport. The day I shared a beer with Erich Zakowski while his team prepared the Capri. Such moments are priceless. I first met Erich when they presented the Mercedes 190 with the Diebels-Alt livery for the DTM. THANK YOU for this video. This ensures that the sport isn't forgotten for people who never experienced that time, and the memories are kept alive for people like me. THANK YOU! Warmest regards, Hannibal.

Actually, in the 80s, there wasn't one country called Germany, there were two. Those blue shirts and flags at 1:00 look a lot like this might be a FDJ event, meaning that it's the German Democratic Republic and therefor the wrong Germany for the purposes of this video. Two more things to add: Not all of those DRM Fords are the same, Zakspeed at some point started putting their own turbo charged engines into their Fords. Zakspeed in general are (or at least were) a very interesting operation, from being a F1 constructors supplying their own engines until turbos got banned to the Viper shenanigans around the Nordschleife Regarding Mercedes leaving DTM: Timo Glock's 2018 Hockenheim team radio at the end of a race that featured a great battle between him and that year's champion (and silhouette car era DTM staple) Gary Paffet, who was a Mercedes driver, is very explicit about what he thought of Mercedes leaving, you might want to give it a listen (unless you don't like swearing).

DTM Classic is a thing. It races as feature series on the DTM weekends. DTM weekend usually contains: DTM, DTM classic, DTM Trophy (junior series with GT4 cars) and BMW M2 cup

I'm a bit surprised that the only two large touring car championships currently are the Super GT and DTM.

I can still remember going to see the DTM races at circuit Zolder. I even had the Mercedes 190E Evo 1 as a RC -car as a kid. The closest to DTM now is historic Belcar racing.

Great channel, this is the second time I've subbed cause of my multiple channels, youtube weirdness, etc... Love the content, the research, video, audio, and narration. And it's nice to see a tuber who understands how to maximize his product (personality) without shoving it the viewer's face. Dude. Not to mention any names, but some of those British guys need to understand that I just do not want to look their shiny bald head when they are giving their opinion on Lewis Hamilton. The Mercedes 190 is my favorite car. It is more beautiful than most of the cars that Mercedes makes now, especially the Mercedes 190 Evo.

Cant help thinking how super gt adopting the DTM format back in 2014 was made completely irrelevant after the very format it started to imitate was disbanded soon after. I'd say DTM trully lives through SuperGT now, with the NSX GT500 adopting the Front engine layout(the MR layout was a struggle to adapt to the fatter DTM styled chassis after 2014) Though of course GT300 offers great diversity as it always has, with a mixture of an already proven diverse format, FIA GT3 cars, along with crazy sick mother-chasis entries and production entries do make it a treat.

Great content , lucky to find 2 190e cossies I found rather cheap in theHouston area , couldn’t believe a craigslist, a none badged 85 5 spd with fueling issues , brought it home and it was with diligence it was running again .The second , an 87 auto fell into my ownership with a tow truck driver giving me a lead , he said he knew of one if I was interested . I began the immediate response of address and started that way , another Parker just in need of fuel tank remedies and fuel distributer woes . The motors are long lived jewels ,they are built to take the fun .

We were supposed to get small expo races with dtm cars in america around 2013. 8-10 cars as a companion race to grand am events. There were official announcements and everything. But then alms and grand am merged that year, and there was no need/room for it after that, and noone has spoken a word about it since it was announced in the 1st place, never even heard a confirmation it was cancelled but obviously it didnt happen lol

Tbh. I loved the DTM C1 cars from 2000 on. Yes they moved away from the puristic Touringcar Concept of the 90's even more after 2012 but created unique Racecars merging the best of Toca and GT (and innovations introduced by F1/LMP). Due to their hightech design, aerodynamics and components no TC ABS and whatnot was required and despite the overhyped GT3 not every driver was able to handle them correctly (see Andy Priaulx, multiple BTCC Champion, or those F1 guest stars who all more or less had some issues running them smoothly). I'm a simracer for 20 Years plus and instantly bought the DTM Experience Sim, joined an online league and truely had the most fun ever to chase these kinda virtual cars around the track for quiet a few years, loved the race and pitstop regulations and all. But I also understood (even by driving a simulated version) the low acceptance audience wise : Those DTM Cars were "drivers cars" not "audience cars" , though the DTM guys battled the shit out of each other every season (like me and my pals did with the virtual ones) they couldn't transmit that thrill to a wider audience in the long run - in a way the cars were too perfect in all aspects (similar to F1) and so viewed from outside the cockpit they created boredom for the average (and "original" ) Fan - the (great) carnage from the 80s and 90s was gone anyway and will not come back. Well yeah, to switch back to Privateers in 2020 in terms of popularity was the right step, cause the audience also changed (also by the advancements of virtual racing merging with real life motorsport) not to talk about economic crisis , covid and whatnot but since all racing is dominated by yet another GT3 series I more or less lost interest in DTM. While the DTM from 2000 on wasn't the original DTM anymore, the GT3 based one is even less - except for the new regulations to get a wider audience back...making it more down-to-earth...nothing against that, if the folks enjoy it...just not my cup of tea anymore

I often come to this channel and enjoy these quality ass videos. I love learning about motorsport history and what made it what it is today. Donut unfortunately doesn't do it me anymore; they've fallen off, at least for me. They don't make the content that made them popular anymore. Please don't stop making these kinds of videos. Someone has to do it, and I guess it won't be Donut anymore.

If DTM make a comeback, nowadays they can have BMW M2s, Mercedes CLAs, Audi RS3s, Volvo V30/V40s and even MK-5 Supras. Would be nice!!

In the 90s the Super Tourenwagen Cup (STW) was the no1 touring car racing series in germany with 2 Liter cars from bmw,audi, opel,honda,peugeot, nissan and ford.

The dtm calibra looks incredible

The GM coupe you were talking about that didn’t appear in the DTM, it’s pronounced as Calibra, not Calibre. It’s one of Europe’s most aero efficient cars.

I've always taken the thinly veiled GT3 clone that is current DTM as the sign that actual DTM is dead as a doornail. They're just GT cars now. No more saloons, no more vaguely street representative cars, just exclusive boy racer dentist cars. The only DTM part of modern DTM is the fact it's held in Germany. It's very optimistic to say "oh look, DTM is still around and it's a statement on how undying it is", but we're looking at something that's wearing the skin of a corpse we used to love.

i would say DTM drop to GT3 rule is the best decision since 1997, look at how many race winner in 2023 season, what a great year

I say start a race series that is easy to get into using 80's and 90's cars, some competitive prizes, low entry cost, and let people get into it and race. Put some camera's on it and see how it goes

Audi v8 with Strizl Stuck an Walter Röhrl. Also with the privat team of Gerd Ruch and his very fast Ford Mustang. At that time DTM was the best. The Driver were near to the spectators and the cars where almost the same you could by the morning after the race at your local dealership.

I was on the last Mercedes DTM race on the Hockenheimring in 2019. Wont forget that day

As an austrian, hearing you pronounce german is hilarious. The two languages really make it hard to pronounce the opposite one. And even without considering that, great job, it genuinely sounds compelling!

I miss AVUS races. I get why they stopped, too dangerous, track was kinda weird, but still, when I drive past the grandstands I get nostalgic, even after 25 years, or how long it has been. For a racing fan living in Berlin it was great.

check out STW, Super touren wagen. That was also a freaking sick touring car championship had makes from germany, france, japan .etc similar to Dtm the racing was intense and also has a lore of its own
