Just bought a 2006 S430 4matic I'm extremely happy with this automobile the S Class W 220 I think are the best of the Mercedes thank you for posting

Actually, it's considered to be the worst S model. Mercedes tried to cut costs after the over engineered 126 and 140, the 220 was the result.

@@theodoreyoung8777 Yeah Lexus is great - not Mercedes level IMO but very nice - my grandfather has a GS350 which is isn't close to an LS but still very nice.

I do think the E65 is a future classic, while this W220 isn't as good as you would expect. Nice video though! Just seeing the last bit: So what Quentin is saying the E65 was a leap into the future, and I do think that journalists don't use a car for a few weeks and getting used with another kind of thinking.. But the exterior was indeed not the nicest...

The E65 is literally one of the worst BMWs ever made...quite far from a future classic. It's notorious for having a unintuitive and primitive version of idrive and also for just being catostrophically unreliable. Watch Hoovies...he junked two of them (a 760 and Alpina). Don't get me wrong I like BMWs and am a big E38 fan but I've never heard anyone say this about the E65...today a true German piece of junk imo.

@@IvyLeagueCars Maybe you're right. But what I see is always the high-end versions going wrong, but in my neighborhood the more mundane versions (735i and 730d's) are still going strong. These aren't optioned to the hill, so less to go wrong..

E65 is an absolute mess, had headgasket failure as soon as I got mine. It was an absolute mess so I settled for an S65 W220. Only issue I've had over the years was a leak from the seal for the accumulator, which I fixed myself for 5$

The 1998 till late 02 S class are the worth moneypits you can buy. They RUST like crazy. And electronic gremlins are also present. I have owned 3 off them. Engines and transmissions are bulletproof though. I now own a 03 S500 and never had any serious problems. Except a vacuum pump and a air shock.

My 03 even has some rust on the driver's side rear fender wheel arch. Nowhere else though, but it _is_ rather disappointing. I've had mine for 5 years now, but I don't drive it often, only on road trips and in the winter. I haven't had anything serious go wrong with mine either. I've had to replace 2 relays and the secondary air pump that burned out because one of the aforementioned relays stuck in the closed position. I've also had to fix 2 LED lights inside, that burned out (door handles). So far it's been easy to service myself. I do all the oil changes and parts replacement thus far.

I always prefer facelifts cars which in many manufacturers resolve lots of issues that has been in pre model.

Nice video 20 years ago made, nice way of describing and talking about cars. One thing can be certain, time revealed the truth and since BMW iDrive, 110% of carmakers adopted a jog on the middle tunnel which controls a screen standing above the air vents. The fact that it was dangerous to control iDrive, it's complete nonsense when you look at Mercedes back then, where you couldn't do much without lifting your back towards the screen. Much more attention you had to spend controlling the systems in Mercedes than in the BMW. And I'm a Mercedes fan, I actually love that S-class generation, I have Mercedes too. About Lexus? Lexus has proven they aren't for this market, the 2021 Lexus it's the same stupidity inside like in the early 2000s. Thanks for the video!

I'm a fan but not of the W140, so it has at least 1 more fan. Don't know about 2 more, but probably.

@@lewishamalexander1275 No it's not. The old Merc from 80s/90s reliable and some 80s Merc are still around today. Modern Merc have plastic in engine, plastic fuel pump. They are only good while in warranty period.

I am Merc fan but on this occasion I would pick the Lexus over the Merc.

17:52 18:17 18:56 Very odd with all this criticism. I've heard from many, that the LS430 is a big improvement over the LS400, and even an improvement over the Mercedes W140/W220 models. The LS430 is considered to be the best Lexus ever made, and NO, I don't own any of the LS or Mercedes models, despite my username, but this is all I've heard from other owners of both. It's considered to be a japanese Rolls-Royce, what do you expect of communication to the driver, really. Clearly, you're a mercedes guy only, so nothing else works for you.

Nah the Japanese Rolls Royce is the Toyota Century the LS is just the cheaper S class competitor….. and yeah the LS430 is nice but the main drawback was the short wheelbase only whereas W220 in the US is all long wheelbase….

...and the LS430 still is better at overall reliability and resale value lol!! Great vid!!

The Lexus LS 430 is probably the worst of the LS models. Hideous front with bulging headlights and the rear is trying to to be a copy of the W140. The previous LS 400 or the LS 460 are much better looking cars. As for the BMW E65, I’m wondering how management could approve such an ugly design on such an important car. Again the previous E32 and E 38 were so much nicer cars.

Exactly why I bought a W220 because I like all the luxury cars from the 2000s but this just made sense when comparing them all….

W220 interior is definitely not holding up well after all these years.The level of cheapness is mind boggling even on a 55K.

Agreed my Kompressor's seats are beautiful but rather tough. I'll pull some 600 seats and swap other bits over next chance I get. Hopefully a Designo pops up for parts.

More that likely that Lexus is still driving around today. I love the S class but I’d have a Lexus first and foremost

Yes probably the worst S Class but still a pretty good car…. like Doug Demuro said all the other S Classes were great but this was really good…. But I bought it for the 2000s nostalgia ngl cus I grew up when these were new 😂
