    This is a pretty terrible comparison. 4l V8 Lexus vs 3.2l straight 6. The guy is only giving pros of the S class, the woman is only giving cons about the LS400, she didn't even mention there are almost no optional extras on the LS400, just about everything comes as standard for the £46K price whereas just about everything on the S class is an optional extra. They also said "both have a 0-60 time of under 9 seconds." but didn't mention the LS400 is a full 3 seconds quicker to 60 than the S320. The top speed of the LS400 is also almost 20 mph faster than the S320. They also forgot to mention the LS400 is quieter than the S320, even though the S320 has double glazing and the LS400 doesn't. I'm not saying the S class is a bad car, but they should have at least compared the S400 as well as mention the pros and cons of both cars.

    Shan Mirza Wrong. As a current owner of a MB S Class..I can tell you right now that you will be spending thousands of dollars on repairs..while with a Lexus all you will spend is on oil changes and regular maintenance. Which is why my next car will be a Lexus.

    Shan Mirza Please understand that I come from a family of Doctors & Lawyers (I am a Doctor) that only drove luxury European autos..that being only two brands..BMW & Mercedes Benz. The BMW's were driven by younger family members who wanted fast cars with great steering. And the MB's were driven by the older members who placed a higher value on a luxurious ride and presence. I fell into the MB side..and was very happy with how beautiful my S Class looked. Everywhere I went people complimented me. People were also jealous of my car..and if I parked it at a mall or restaurant..I sometimes would come back to see a scratch on the door..or someone had tried to steal the silver star from the hood. However..my family warned me about the price of ownership of these vehicles..and that was with repairs. Let me say that this car has been relatively reliable. It always starts..and has never stalled on me or left me stranded. That's not the issue. The issue is the terrible electronics it has..and the problems with the transmission. MB has already admitted publicly that they made a terrible mistake when they outsourced their electronic components, as the company whom they purchased them from had terrible quality. This happened after the W126 model..which ended production in 1992..although I believe it continued production a year or two longer in Africa. So from the W140 model up to now..electronics are a HUGE problem with MB cars. And the costs of repairs is outrageous..as anyone like myself who has had to have them done can tell you. I also had huge engine problems..to the point I had to replace the entire engine. Keep in mind I don't drive this car in harsh environments like my family members who live in Dubai. I drove this car in an American city with no snowfall or really bad weather. Then..my transmission started slipping so badly my mechanic said "Sir..I can repair this of course..but it will cost as much to do this as you buying another transmission..". So..I bought another transmission. And none of these repairs were under warranty..as the car warranty was over. So my car..the venerable S Class..a car that is supposed to be the finest car built on earth..is on it's second engine and transmission..and has had most of it's electronics replaced as well. And I STILL have problems with my antennae going up & down..my windows rolling up & down..and lights on my dash not lighting up properly. Do I love my car? Of course I do. It was my dream car. But my dream has turned into a nightmare. Now here is the thing that really angers me. All my friends who drive Lexus LS's NEVER have any of these problems. Nothing. Ever. And they have even lent me their cars when mine is in the repair shop..and guess what? The damn LS feels EXACTLY like my S Class does. Same luxurious ride. Same weighted steering. Same quiteness. If I had been blindfolded and given rides in both cars..I wouldn't know the difference. And THAT my friend really bothers me. Because it means MB could in fact build a reliable car..instead of costing us thousands upon thousands in repairs. Some people at my MB dealership have confided in me that MB does this on purpose to keep their dealership repair shops happy..that this is how they make money. All I know is that enough is enough..I am done spending money on repairing my car when I could have used it to buy another nice watch..or another vacation to Hawaii. I have warned my friends who still want to buy this car to impress others that "mark my words..yes it will be wonderful for a while..and you will fall in love with it..but just like a bad lover..it will hurt you in the end..and you will regret it". They never believe me..until it happens..and then they are calling me saying "How in the world can this be happening?! Why are they asking me to pay thousands to repair something on my MB that never breaks down in a Lexus..or even a Hyundai for god's sake!". And that's when they trade their car in for a Lexus and the complaints stop. I have already spent so many thousands on my S Class that I am keeping it for now because quite frankly nobody will give me anything near what I have spent on it if I trade it in for another car. But believe me..when the current engine and/or the transmission dies again..it will be a Lexus. Those of us who love MB don't leave the car easily..we love the brand..the image..and the initial good quality. But MB has left us..they have cheated us of great quality..and the only way to enjoy a MB now is to lease it and trade it in before it bites you in the ass if you decide to keep it longer than a couple of years. Sorry for the long story..but you seem very committed to this brand..as I was..and I felt you needed to know the truth. You can also google "mercedes benz lemon law lawsuit" to see the countless other stories of people like me who have spent thousands on repairs and some who have even sued MB in court over such bad quality and have even won. Take care.

    Both cars are reliable when you service them properly - there is a LS400 and w140 s500 around the corner and both still run properly. The Merc looks better though, because somebody is taking care of it properly. I live in Germany btw. Problem is that there are many people, that can't afford to service these high class limousines properly so they either let them die or they sell them as soon as a few things got damaged which is very sad for a car guy i consider myself.

    @@johnw1954that’s saying more about oil quality than anything else. I have no doubt that any Mercedes engine in the past 50-60 years would be fine on that interval. It’s obviously stupid and not ideal for any car, but true. Don’t forget Lexus engines were using timing belts at the time, which would be considered absolutely unacceptable on a Mercedes, but don’t rely on oil for lubrication like chains do.

    151000. 280E and 260E. The LS400 and LS430 are, in my opinion and that of many others, among the very best, if not the best, cars ever made. But we all value different things in cars. For me it's reliability, safety and comfort. I know a fair amount about cars and find the dealer service very disappointing. The quality of the techs. is high but the business practices are not. My friends have had similar adverse interactions. At least that's been my experience. M-B was even worse in my case and I got especially good treatment. In fact, it was my M-B tech., who was really excellent, who told me to consider Lexus LS. He thought it was a superior vehicle. I agree.

Before I bought the Mercedes I used to own Lexus IS250 with 70,000 miles and its going to mechanic few times a year because of electric issues. Mercedes always innovate new technology and safety, reliable, and very well built. It is a rumor that people says Mercedes break down easily because lets face it Mercedes is one of the best selling car and its not by accident because it is an excellent car. Yeah I'm going to have to disagree too unfortunately! They are both fantastic however the Lexus was designed to last 200,000 miles with minimal repairs, whereas the W140 was designed to last until the end of time as long as you had the money for maintenance haha But in saying that these Mercs all had dual row timing chains that have gone 1,000,000km without being replaced where the Lexus needs a timing belt and water pump changing every 160,000km which can be expensive, and it's usually this procedure that has them sent to the wreckers when the cost of doing so overtakes the car's value. That could be reflected by the fact that the Lexus in the video was scrapped 7 years before the MOT expired on the W140.

    idk? i have a 1994 s500 and nothing has ever broken on it... almost 140k miles.. 315hp v8 engine with about 475 lb-ft of torque.. front and rear power adjusted seats, front and rear heated seats, very cold and very warm ac/heater, amazingly smooth ride, double pained windows keep almost all sound out.. you cant even hear the crazy loud and deep horn, auto closing doors, rear sunshade, i could go on forever.. but the most important thing (over the power, of course) is the quality.. when i was looking at cars i checked out an ls400 and when i got in the w140 s500... the quality of the materials didnt even compare..

    That's not even fully accurate. LS 400 planning began in 1983 as silver jubilee model targeted for 1987 launch. Lexus as a brand came later in 1986-87. LS 400 was initially planned as a super Toyota flagship with export in mind, until USA execs shot it down in 1986 and pushed for separate branding, an insult to the prideful Toyoda family.

    In 1990 Lexus launched the LS400 in the U.K., a year after its US launch. It was up against Jaguar, BMW, and Mercedes. It was the new kid on the block and sent major shivers through the old established marques. Mercedes were yet to introduce their new S class and were replacing a model that had been in production for nigh on thirteen years. The new S class was designed to be seen outside all the embassies, golf clubs and millionaires rows. It became exceedingly heavy, both in weight and looks, very slab sided and solid. It’s unique for its time features like double glazing and parking aids and air bags made it stand out. The year of this review, the Lexus had had its first facelift and tweak but was still very recognisable as a descendant of the first LS. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it??? The Mercedes went on to do what it does best and convey Teutonic strength... but as the years roll by, they wear out, suspension and brakes suffer due to the weight, as do tyres. Mercedes regularly throw their original gearboxes by 120k miles, rust is also an issue for many Mercs, especially E Class and sprinters of the 1990’s... Here in the U.K. I rarely see an S Class of the 90’s now but regularly see older Lexus models, because as used older Japanese vehicles they are still inherently reliable. Their electrics rarely fail like Mercedes famed biodegradable canbus systems, and their drivetrains are virtually bullet proof. Don’t get me wrong, I like both brands, I own vehicles from both these manufacturers but for me I’d take the Lexus every time. It was a very biased review, they didn’t swap cars at any point and have to give opinions on two cars each rather than one. In the U.K. prestigious brands always charged extra for every new feature including unbelievably a radio right into the 1980’s, possibly the Japanese being responsible for including so much as standard in their specifications since the 1970’s that most manufacturers caught up and priced their cars with everything included by the 1990s! Mercedes and BMW were notorious for having ridiculous lists of what they still considered an option that came inclusive everywhere else! How else did Lexus manage its incredible repeat recognition in the customer satisfaction surveys and awards here in the JD Power surveys!

The S500 and S600 would wipe the floor with the Lexus in power and luxury. Lexus fans will say “but the Lexus is much cheaper!” People with the money to buy these cars aren’t looking for a bargain. Two absolutely fantastic cars that occupy two different corners of the same class! I can offer unbiased experiences as I can see people are swinging one way or another, probably based on what they currently own... The LS was a techno marvel, very reliable but of course completely void of character or 'soul'. The interiors were well put together and solid feeling but the materials weren't over the top, as there was a bit more plastic and not much in the way of real wood, if any at all if I recall. The W140 was much the same however it had a few more problematic areas, yet was somehow better put together in general. This was especially noticeable in the interior which definitely felt more special and famously has that 'bank vault' feeling that no other car has marched since. The leather was spot on and there was real hand finished wood all over. I feel the W140 has slightly more wind noise at speed but the double glazed windows help keep it to a minimum. The 4.0 in the Lexus is an absolute marvel of a V8 and extremely reliable, so long as maintenance is kept up to scratch as it has a timing belt which will destroy the engine if left to perish, and it's aluminium block is sensitive to overheating. This can be an expensive procedure to add to the maintenance schedule if you plan on keeping one for a long time. The W140 offered a huge variety of engines but I only have experience with the 3.2L M104 inline 6, which is also a marvel. They have a tendency to leak oil but other than that they have a dual row timing chain and a cast iron block i.e. they are literally designed to last forever - completely indestructible. I have some experience with the M120 V12 also offered in the W140 but in an SL600. Those are a masterpiece, however they can be a bit expensive to maintain at this stage of their life. Overall I think the LS would be a safer option for a daily driver, however I don't think they are cars that you would spend an excessive amount on keeping alive, and a large mechanical bill would probably have me send one to the wreckers. The W140 will most likely require more work over the same period (but that might be offset by the Lexus' requirement to have the timing belt and water pump replaced periodically), however I think it would be more worthwhile as they hold more of a classic status than the Lexus. The W140 is a car that people don't seem to have an issue with pouring money into to keep them on the road because they are just that bit more special. All in all it depends on what you want. You could sit here arguing all day but they are both different cars that appeal to different buyers! I actually know someone who has both, and for the reasons I stated he daily drives the Lexus for work, and the W140 on weekends. However he states that he would replace the Lexus (possibly with another Lexus) but the W140 he will not part with until the day he dies.

The first gen LS was nearly "hand built"quality. Some robotic welds were invisible to the human eye. It was the most aerodynamically slippery car until Mazdas FD RX7. When new,LS400 blew away the Europeans in every possible way. Faster,lighter,quicker,quieter,higher tech,Pioneer sound system, better mpg,aerodynamics,you name it. And it was priced better. Mercedes boss was fired nearly as a result of Lexus sucess. They also perfected the CPO program. The first Lexus were so well made,they were nearly new when they were traded in.

    The W140 is the most forgiving car in the world. Easy to repair. Parts aren't expensive (COMPARED TO LEXUS) and their handling and style is unlike any other. I'm not saying this because i own some, I'm saying it because theres a reason why I own multiple...

    It's so satisfying to see lexus reaching the level of luxury. at the past years and more than a decade we already know that the cars were really new and costed a not small amount of money. It's now 20s and the cars population gone too down but lexus is still alive in thier tires. Remember when Toyota had a hype with thier jz's sports and luxury cars at the time like the supras and chasers,they were great and they never been forgotten for thier engineering and model. Mercedes started to make more cars for peoples wich can afford a Mercedes like thoose a classes and e's but lexus/Toyota never build something incredible for now, Alright maybe the new supra wich BMW also helped to make a car but to be honest, the car is not a car when is not from thier hands, even many peoples complained to get 3jz. We maybe didn't realise that Toyota and even Nissan didn't brought us a sport car (except of supra and gt86) because they knew that the community is still alive and they knew that we still love the cars wich we got at the past. This is how lexus ls400 is still alive. Once my dad told:"older cars are better than new because they already have what they should have. They don't need hybrid, thickness, ultra smart gadgets or even thoose back seats TV, like for what is it? For relaxing? even tho you can sleep in the car instead."

    you see a lot more early 90s ls400 on the road than that s class... so that says something. funny though seems her complaints about the ls400 are the same as mine in my 97 es300. rough ride, wind noise at high speed, nicely crafted but dull interior. but my es is gonna roll over 200k miles this month and it still runs like a top

    Except, he is right. The new Mercedes Chrysler Benz' are absolute crap. Their electronics are in the stone age and Mercedes has definitely slipped up. There is a reason Lexus is the #1 rated manufacturer in the world when it comes to reliability and customer satisfaction. Old Mercedes' were amazing. The Turbo Diesels and 90's S-Class cars were great. New Mercedes? Overpriced fucking jokes.

    Er... Daimler got rid of Chrysler back in 2007 - at about the same time when quality started going up again. Cars like the W204 C-class and W212 E-class are very reliable cars! In fact, here in Europe, the E-class has turned out to be *the* most reliable car several years in row, after checking and analysing more than 15.000.000 (!) used cars.

    It's a matter of personal opinion, choice and experience I've never owned a Lexus but people I know have almost been bankrupt by theirs while others have spent no money on theirs. I've owned a few Mercedes over the years and my best car ever was a 1995 S320 until some crackhead ran a red light and let's just say there's a reason Ford call the Ford flex by its name. I came out without a scratch and his car turned into a C he emerged all bloody. Prior to that the car cost me less than a grand in repairs in about 10 years most of the money I spent was for oil changes brakes and upgrades

    Why are they comparing an S320 to an LS400? A 6-cylinder against a V8? Come on. A 400SE (SEL) and later S420 existed. If these are two 1997 cars then the Mercedes that should be compared to the LS400 should have been the S420.

  • @cb5620

    @cb5620

    Perhaps, but as they mention in the video even with the 3.2 the Mercedes is (was) still far more expensive than the Lexus. As it's a consumer advice show it makes more sense to compare two which are similarly priced - it just so happens that for less money the Lexus came better equipped.

  • @cawimmer430

    @cawimmer430

    Back in the day I believe it was the Lexus strategy to undercut the competition via cheaper pricing while offering more features. It worked for them no doubt. Still an LS400 should be compared to a V8 S-Class, not a V6 - from a performance point of view. ;)

  • @cb5620

    Yeah, they're both comfortable cruisers. Not much difference between them in the way they ride and sound. That being said, I was never big on the W140 S-Class. To me it was the most dull S-Class ever. Boring inside and out. My favorite S-Classes ever are the W116 and the W126 (I used to have an '85 300SE, great car) and the current W222.

    well... the s500 w140 had 315 hp and 475 lb-ft torque.. mine on the dyno had 321 hp and 478 lb-ft of torque... its a fairly powerful car especially being as heavy as it is.. 0-60 in 6.7 seconds.. and when you step on it hearing the v8 slightly emanate into the cabin is beautiful...

    i have a 1994 s500 and nothing has ever broken on it... almost 140k miles..
