It's definitely possible that the Mercedes E400 4Matic is smarter than me. But I wouldn't be laughing if I was you, because its entirely possible that its smarter than you, too. And that's because this is the new ground zero in the battle for best in-car technology, and Mercedes has thrown everything they've got at it to tackle the best from BMW and Audi. it drives itself, parks itself, changes lanes on demand and will scream to a complete stop from 100km/h in an emergency without you having to touch the brake. And that's only part of it.
So lets take it for a spin. Or have it take us for a spin. Or something.
But before we get to all of that, let's talk power. The E400 4Matic is the top of the pops in the E-Class line-up, apart from the AMG-stamped models, of course, so it gets a hugely entertaining twin-turbo V6 that will send its power to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission. And that means a sub-six-second 0-100km/h time and a limited top speed of 210km/h. So it's quick.
Design is hugely subjective, of course, but we're head over heels with the look of this thing. Those AMG-stamped alloys are 20 inches, there's 84 individual LEDs in the headlights, that panoramic glass sunroof is standard fit and these strips here are polished aluminium. But more than that, the design just works. It looks at once both polished and purposeful.
Elsewhere, expect a 13-speaker Burmester stereo, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate-control and the usual scattering of niceties you might expect to find in a circa-$140k car.
Ok, so lets talk about the whole smarts thing we mentioned. Most of it falls under Merc's safety umbrella, and its impressive. Expect lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring and 360-degree reversing cameras and the like, but this is also the closet thing to an autonomous car that Merc's got in its family. So it will keep up with traffic on the highway, and keep within the lane markings, but it will also change lanes for you when you hit the indicator, and scream to a stop if there;s an emergency. If it senses a t-bone collision, it will move you away from the point of impact. And if it senses a rear collision, a high-pitched sound will play through the speakers, preparing you ears for the sound of the impact and minimising the chance of eardrum damage
But the E-Class's true party trick is its ability to drive mostly autonomously along Australia's endless freeways. Like most, it will keep up with traffic and stay within the lines, but it will also change lanes for you when you hold down the indicator stalk. Its a cool - if a touch scary on a rainy and grey Sydney day - trick, but if we're honest, its difficult to know when you might actually use it. Either way, though, it does nudge us ever closer to an autonomous future.

I have one of these and mighty happy I am too. There's a totally disingenuous Aussie car YTer who has a serious hate of Mercedes-Benz, and claims they are unreliable. Well, I've had 4 Mercs and know at least 6 other current owners and none of us has had ANY issues with our cars.

Well, I have the same engine in my used CLS 400, 110.000kms when I bought it. Runs amazingly but twice in 3 months I had issues with an NOX-sensor. These cost €700 for the part and labor. These engines have 4 of them and if they keep braking down frequently the running cost of such engines is staggering. But basically that is an issue with all direct injection fuel engines from what I read on the internet.

@@cornpit77 The MB manual says you should do a fast highway trip at least once a month for about half an hour. If you pootle about in the city all the time in traffic jams or do lots of stop-start driving the sensors will eventually fail if you don't blow out the cobwebs every now and again. This IS a common problem, even Toyota have this issue.

I don't get it...the Mercedes website shows the 4 door sedan only coming in E300 or the AMG versions (E43 and E63). E400 is seems to be reserved for the coupe version based on what I see on the website. Where can you find the E400 4 door?

There’s nothing gross about that car. I like 💕the way the grill sticks out between the headlights. That’s what makes it look badass. So to each his own.

Styling wise, it just doesn't look right with that front end. Needs the Exclusive Line package with the traditional Mercedes-Benz chrome grille and upright star on the bonnet.

as the new lineup of mercedes comes, the void that is now the "e550 replacement" becomes murky. The e400 here is pisspoor in comparison, and the e43 is still weak and more amg themed. looks like its finally time to bite the bullet and get an e63?
