Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3, Lamborghini Miura S, Workshop Catchup Part 1 | Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Iain brings us up to speed with a number of jobs currently in the workshop. In Part 1, he introduces us to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3, a real wolf in sheeps clothing. Whilst it may not shout high performance to look at, the performance is staggering for a car of it's size and age, and Iain explains the secret behind that incredible acceleration. We also catch up on progress with the yellow Lamborghini Miura S, the Black Forest barn-find, which is now fully stripped back to it's core shell.
Stay tuned for Part 2 which will follow very soon!

I absolutely love this channel and all of its content, and I was at first pleasantly surprised to hear my country's name pop up, but then deeply saddened that the environment here has meant that so many skilled people have had to leave. Yes, they are truly beautiful cars, in so many ways In 2006 I was offered one (a 300 SEL 6.3)for $13,000 the seller asked me to drive it for 2 weeks before I made up my mind needless to say, I drive it a lot during those first few weeks however, I knew it's age, and it needed quite a lot of $ to bring it up to "as new" condition, so I didn't buy it. I'm still kicking myself for thinking with my head, not my heart!

When I was little, late 60s, we lived in Munich. My father told me of him racing one of these 6.3s in his Miura, he recounted that he could not shake the 6.3 on the straights, only in the corners. But, every time the road opened up again the 6.3 would haul him in. This was on the open road, not a race track! Always wanted one of these from his stories but had to make do with a 123 300D!

The King of the W109 line AND a Miura in one episode, thank you KZread for sending me this. So many Jags and Italian delights. I will be scouring this channel for Porsche and Mercedes content. Amazing how over half a century ago Daimler Benz engineers had a rough idea that pumping gas right into an engine's combustion chamber at a higher pressure than usual produced a big V8 with exceptional power, smoothness, and drivability. The grandfather of all of today's direct injection big-power gas engines. I'm sure Bosch took a lot of what they learned from this car in designing the CIS injection system of the 70's-80's and gave us cool stuff like the W116 6.9 sedan, Porsche 930, etc.

Brings back a lot of memories. My Mother had a 1972, and we lived in North Atlanta where it is pretty hilly. Fortunately 93 octane fuel at the Amoco Station was about 30 cents a gallon because I think that car got only 8 MPG. Maybe less with the air conditioner on and a heavy foot. It was a very fast car even when full of my friends and we could be bad boys!

That was impressive for such a classic Mercedes. (And a fantastic sound too.)

One day in northern Tasmania I was driving along the main street of a small town and I saw the Benz 300sel 6.9 I had seen a few times before. Gleaming metallic silver with black interior. The driver was a short and thin elderly man with white almost shoulder length hair, dressed in black and wearing a floppy black beret. The tall and thin woman in the passenger seat was dressed in very elegant clothing. Ahead of me the Benz turned from a side street onto the main road and the driver then floored the car. What a sight, the car looked like liquid platinum in the bright sunshine. I had noticed the car and the extraordinary looking couple before. Back in 1970 or 71 a very wealthy relative ordered a Mercedes Benz 280sel 3.5 in a colour combination I have never seen before, in Europe or Australia, it was a rich beige exterior with cloth black and white houndstooth interior. 1990 he bought a new dark metallic blue Ferrari Testarossa.
