This so underappreciated by most commenters here. You can see in the video the car is very, very good. But two other things really stand out: the tires make almost no noise (so clearly very soft) and Christian is a fantastic driver.

I think Christian Gebhardt deserves some respect for that very committed lap.

It takes large and hairy balls to drive on this track like that. I get sweaty palms in Forza let alone real life.

I have at least 20 fatal collisions per lap when I drive the Nurburgring in Project Cars.

Everyone who asks about tyres, read the description ! It's Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2. This car is amazingly fast !

Again: No slicks or cutted slick-tyres were used for the lap time. AMG will offer two different versions of the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 for the AMG GT R. A normal one, like it is available for the GT S, and a special one for track driving with a more sticky compound. BUT: Both versions of Cup 2 for the AMG GT R are fully street legal! You can compare the sticky Cup 2 for AMG GT R with the Cup 2 for the Corvette Z06. The grip level feels pretty similar!

Respect for the time. but which type of tyres was on the Porsche Spyder and the Ferrari 488? Is that the reason why the GT R are faster? Or is the only truth that AMG just built an amazing Car?

Does it matter? Regardless of rear wheel or all wheel drive, the time it takes to complete 1 lap is how you logically measure how fast a thing is on this stretch of German made bitumen.

Yeah it is. But it's pretty normal. GTR has no restrictor; so full 580 hp turbo against 550 hp atmo for GT3. And GTR has less aero. It's uphill, so with a good driver who knows the lines, he can keep up, just for that part. But Merc GT3 is so f@cking beautiful :)

yep, but I say that GT R could do that lap 0.5 - 0.9 seconds faster if there wasnt that GT3 passing... I am really curios what time AMG GT3 does its under 7:00 for sure

This was an independent test so why would it have slicks? Where exactly did you see slicks on it? The GT3 race car is about 300kg lighter than the GT R and has massively more aerodynamic grip. A modern day GT3 without success ballast would easily do sub 6:50.

Extremely impressive and fast time. Such a good time form a publication to. Instead of a lot of laptimes with factory employees with laptops changing who knows what.

You can clearly see the employees at 0:22, the only difference with a factory lap is that it's not a factory driver.

Mercedes is dominant in F1 For a reason. and the new tech is proving it in road cars. no argument can be made about this.

I think this is the best Nordschleife production car lap I've ever seen. Just maximum attack! Considering the layout of the car, the front axle grip and response of the GTR is just incredible. The car is a total weapon.

I'm impressed by so many things right now! First and foremost the driving, that was damn fine work Mr Gebhardt, secondly the frontal downforce nevermind the traction in general is really amazing, and the time achieved, great stuff.

let the haters hate !! AMG 4 the win !!

When you're looking after the last seconds on the ring or the last tenths on a regular track, tires are everything. Everybody remember this crazy frenchie who patiently managed to get under 10' with a tiny Citroen AX diesel (58hp). Aside from his sheer dedication, his two keypoints were the "added lightness", à la Chapman, and the Yokohama Advan A048. Standard cheapo Michelin would have needed at least one MINUTE more...

Hi Christian, congratulations, amazing lap and no 4 point harness! Did this car have ceramic brakes and AMG Track package with roll cage? We will be testing and playing with our AMG GTR at the ring next spring and summer. p.s. I look forward to you having another go with 488 GTB, I think (and I am ready to bet) you can do quicker lap than 7.21.

The Truth yes I agree with you the AMG GT-R is faster than any R8 in the track and more fun to drive because AMG sound + RWD and better in daily drive

Mercedes can't anyone stop now, except Porsche, Lamborghini etc., but Mercedes does not end with this amazing car, there is soon also coming the new C63 Black Series Coupe or the Hypercar AMG R50, which will destroy definitely anything, the other two competitors (Bmw, Audi) are no more opponents in the sportscar area for Mercedes! This is an absolute fact!

Otherwise thats your opinion, but i think Mercedes built very good supercars, you can also see the Nurburgring-Laptime of AMG GTR which is simply very good, even better than the fastest stock Porsche ever built (918 Spyder), I do not understand why you would not buy a supercar from Mercedes, thats inexplicable to me.

Leety McLeet LOL this is the Laptime of the Porsche 918 Spyder with "Weissach package tuning" (lighter, more horsepower), the regular (stock) Laptime of Porsche 918 Spyder on Nürburgring is 7:13, and besides the AMG GTR had not even slicks on it only normal road tires, i am sure it will create with Slicks the laptime under 7 minutes, inform you better before you play here the "smart aleck", wish you a nice 2017 ;)

Props to AMG if they sell this car with that particular compound on the Sport Cup 2's (the tires were nearly silent the entire lap), but clearly the car is extremely capable and Christian's skills are exceptional. Sport Auto: please have a big comparison test with other top contenders soon with Christian driving them all....

Honestly, looking at the lap, it could've been even better. Being passed by the GT3 car there was some time lost. If it were hotter there would have probably been more grip... Maybe I'm wrong, but I definitely feel there's more time in the car. Outstanding.
