Tom reviews the new 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe and provides an expert opinion.
How good is the new AMG ’53’ engine? Very, very good, it turns out. Even when it’s shoved into the large shape and size of the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, which has returned for a second generation. The GLE Coupe competes with the BMW X6 and Audi Q8, and with a much higher-quality interior and smooth, inline six-cylinder powertrains, the GLE Coupe is a sporty car on stilts. But is the GLE 53 the best of the bunch? Or should you go straight for the traditional GLE 63 with the V8 engine? Turns out, no, you shouldn’t.
In today’s view, Tom Baker from Chasing Cars conducts a review of this new version of the Toyota Mercedes GLE with the AMG 53 six-cylinder engine, finished in Hyacinth Red over black leather and Alcantara with wood grain.
What do you think of the all-new GLE Coupe? Do you prefer a traditional wagon body crossover, or a station wagon? Is the V8 more your jam? Or do you prefer the styling of the Audi SQ8? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments box below.

Tom great review. More engine details would be nice, this 53 spec is actually a belt-less engine with a 48v integrated starter-generator (ISG), this is providing the 250nm (and 16kw) you mention although it does also have a 48v compressor (turbo). There is also no 12v battery, conventional starter motor or alternator. The 48v ISG handles starting and charging while the system supplying all electrics in the vehicle. Having no engine belts the a/c compressor and water pump are 48v.

Tom, you are not wrong in preferring the Wagon shape, it's just your preference. For me it's the coupe but I couldn't care less what happens behind me except for the looks. I do care a lot about what is under the bonnet though and I'm fully into that tech. The V8 is for wealthy bogans.

I’m in the United States. I have a 2020 GLE 450 SUV. It does have the 48 volt EQ boost to get the car moving, which it does very well. You said it doesn’t. Is that in Australia only?

If you want a diesel GLE, you have to accept the wagon-SUV (you can't get a diesel GLE Coupe). In the GLE wagon, you can choose the four-cylinder GLE 300d ($105,700) or the inline six-cylinder GLE 400d ($124,400).

Mercedes-Benz don’t have a very large press fleet in Sydney, and the strict lockdown in Melbourne (where they are based) has made it hard to send an extensive range up to Sydney for us to test. Hopefully soon.

Chasing Cars Probably not I’d say but I see Audi are now selling the SQ7/8 in the U.S. and some other markets with a 507hp version of their 4.0 litre twin turbo V8 Petrol, I asked Audi NZ via their Instagram page if they’d be bringing in that motor to this market in the SQ’s and I heard crickets 😂

I assume they'll sell through their allocation of the diesel V8. By the way, I love the diesel V8 -- just that Benz are really showing the way here with how to do a brilliant mild hybrid six. I know Audi are doing a similar thing with the V6, but Benz's implementation is superior -- silkier, smoother, and the inline layout sounds better.

Good luck when your EV is totally worthless landfill in 6 years time, proven by every study out there, let alone the lithium iron cobalt pollution from your dead battery that only 15% can be recycled, let alone the massive carbon footprint of making the thing in first place, or the huge copper waste from the motors, or the increase brake dust and tyre microplastic pollution as your car is so heavy, and the so called free power, coming from COAL 80% of the time, or the massively costly chargers you have to use when away from home that cost more than petrol, EV owners are amoung the most misguided and misinformed people since COVID conspiracy theorists.
