Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 5 in D major/D minor, Op. 107 "Reformation" (with Score)

Музыка

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy:
Symphony No. 5 in D major/D minor, Op. 107 "Reformation" (with Score)
Composed: 1830, rev.1832
Conductor: Christoph von Dohnányi
Orchestra: Wiener Philharmoniker
00:00 1. Andante - Allegro con fuoco (D major - D minor)
11:39 2. Allegro vivace (B-flat major)
17:07 3. Andante (G minor)
21:00 4. Andante con moto - Allegro vivace - Allegro maestoso (G major - D major)
The Symphony No. 5 in D major/D minor, Op. 107, known as the Reformation, was composed by Felix Mendelssohn in 1830 in honor of the 300th anniversary of the Presentation of the Augsburg Confession. The Confession is a key document of Lutheranism and its Presentation to Emperor Charles V in June 1530 was a momentous event of the Protestant Reformation. This symphony was written for a full orchestra and was Mendelssohn's second extended symphony. It was not published until 1868, 21 years after the composer's death - hence its numbering as '5'. Although the symphony is not very frequently performed, it is better known today than when it was originally published. Mendelssohn's sister, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, chose the name Reformation Symphony.

The symphony is excellent in general, but the fourth movement is spectacular. The fugato at 26:40 is stunning.

My impression after listening to the first movement: it's a great piece of music. The performance is also excellent. I don't know why Mendelssohn didn't think this piece was good..

@@ClassicalMusicAndSoundtracks Most of the early 2000's Barbie films are based on classic fairytales and have classical soundtracks. Barbie Magic of Pegasus's soundtrack is Beethoven heavy, Barbie Nutcracker and Barbie Swan Lake have Tchaikovsky soundtracks as expected, etcetera. Most of the Barbie films focused on ballet used motion capture from professional ballerinas. I think it's a good thing, and it was a great way to introduce both classical music and ballet to young girls.
