To further expand on what the kappelmeister said: It is actually the second Symphony the Mendelssohn wrote. But he withdrew it for revisions after a few performances because he was not satisfied. And then he never came around to revising it. So it was not published until after his death. And since it was published last it was numbered 5. Numberings in Mendelssohn Symphonies are the worst kind of mess. The 4th is not the 4th, the 2nd is not the 2nd and the 3rd is not the 3rd. The 4th is the 3rd, the 3rd is the 4th and the 2nd (Lobgesang) would have been the 4th, but Mendelssohn was unsure how to call it.

Anyone who has the nerve to follow a Dominant 11th by first inversion tonic AND go on for another 40-odd seconds to finish has my vote. Bravo maestro Mendlessohn. One of the most under-rated and neglected transitional Classical/Romantic symphonies. Rhorer is marvellous. Thanks for posting.
Arguably the most underrated symphony of the 19th century.

Bach of course: 'Ein feste Burg'. But there is more in this little jewel: Haydn in the relationship of slow introduction to the main part of movement 1 and a foreshadowing of Bruckner (the early symphonies) in the third movement.

chills at the grande finale - amazing.
A brilliant performance of Mendelssohn's epic Reformation Symphony by the Frankfurt Symphony Orchestra.
This is perhaps my favorite Mendelssohn symphony; the Italian and the Scottish are too well known. This symphony has such brilliance, especially the 4th movement. It is so climactic, so melodic, a "mighty fortress" of musical achievement. My most beloved Mendelssohn symphony. Note the fugue at 28:20. That final sounding note is to my ear dissonant.

Eileen - Well said indeed! The 4th movement is quite wonderful: developed from the 1st movement's gently rousing and melodic theme. This returns in the surprisingly joyous peaks of the 4th movement. Yes, truly a 'mighty fortress' of unforgettable musical achievement.

This is true music in all its glory. Transcendental and full oflyrical expression and ingenuity. After listening to Mendelsohn, it's hard to listen to anything else for a while. He always has been a first tier composer for me, on of the top 10 composers of all time, along with the greats. People are slowly, recently beginning to realize this.

The guy extract impetus from the orchestra at the same time keeps cohesion. Great choice of tempi as well.

One doesn't usually get so pure a connection with Shostakovich as one would with Beethoven or Mozart. When you hear the funeral march of the Eroica symphony, you know what Beethoven was going through, the funeral march fills your heart with somber emotions. The same cannot be said of Dimitri. (I don't hold Donizetti in much of a regard also, he never wrote any concert music!)

Uma obra maravilhosa! Pena que tão pouco conhecida e executada aqui no Brasil
A marvelous testament of the Protestant Reformation. Let it not be forgotten that the work has a supremely spiritual element, built around the great hymn "A Mighty Fortress is Our God." And indeed He is! Mendelssohn was more reverent than many composers in reiterating this, as evidenced by his second symphony and the wondrous composition of "Elijah". We should remember this.
I’ve never really listened to a lot of orchestra music. But when I was young, I found a cassette tape of this symphony, and on the other side of the type what is Beethoven’s ninth. I became a big fan and wore that tape slap out!
