Programma
F. Mendelssohn - Psalm 42 'Wie der Hirsch schreit'
Opname

Why is Mendelssohn so under-appreciated nowadays? This is wonderful music, and richly deserves to be heard and sung everywhere. Maybe with the exception of Brahms, he was the greatest choral composer of the 19th. century. This lovely music tells you why.

There were quite some more great vocal composers in the 19th century: Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Antonín Dvořák, César Franck, Camille Saint-Saëns, Gabriel Fauré, Anton Bruckner, Edward Elgar and many more.

Mendelssohn was the son of a Jewish banker and from an early age he was considered a precocious child in the relation to music. He was one of the most remarkable composers of the Romantic period. He renounced the Jewish religion and joined Protestantism. His works are varied from symphonies to various modalities of religious music, concerts, etc. Psalm 42 is a masterpiece of religious music transporting us to a deep and sensitive meditation. The voices of the choir are amazing and the direction and orchestra are superb. The virtuosity of the music is sublime. The soloist has a fabulous voice and an interpretation of enormous sensitivity. Thanks for these moments of great pleasure when listening to this excellent recording.

It is thrilling to both see and hear Mendelssohn's imaginative orchestration, the woodwind choir in particular with the soloists. At 12' the embryo of the Lobgesang theme is heard for the first time and is clearly a Mendelssohn signature phrase.

Thank you, grazzie, danke schon, obrigado, arigato, merci.
