Full highlights of the Men's Vault Final from the North Greenwich Arena at the London 2012 Olympic Games on 6 August 2012.
Artistic gymnastics was introduced at the very first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, and has been present at every edition of the Games since then. At the beginning, it comprised disciplines that are difficult to qualify as "artistic", such as climbing and acrobatics.
The foundations of the Olympic gymnastics programme were laid at the 1924 Games in Paris, when the men's apparatus individual and team competitions appeared. In 1928, women were included in the Amsterdam Games. It was not until 1952 that the women's programme was developed, with seven events, and then stabilised at six events as from the 1960 Games in Rome.

Damien Spies it’s fairly simple if you think about it. every elite gymnast has a start value depending on how difficult the routine is. if you have an easy routine, your start value will be lower, etc. and there are certain deductions judges take off for mistakes. the deductions are always the same regardless of start value

Does anyone here know what the "penalities" section of the score means? I thought those might be the deductions, but it always shows 0.0 even when the execution score is lower than 10?

29:32 that was so incredibly perfect, I can't even find all the 0.4 deductions, besides -0.1 for leg separation on the first flight and maybe -0.1 for the slightly closed shoulder angle that seems literally impossible to avoid. Oh, also -0.1 because he didn't bring his heels together after landing lol.

Yeah. It's the truth that people get immersed in women's gymnastics partly because of the juicy woman drama you can see on the faces of those ambitious young girls. Ever since the famous story of Olga Korbut "the Darling of Munich" and Nadia Comaneci in the 1970s it's been a part of the spectacle . But nothing detracts from the strength and skill involved. It's all about strength and skill! faster higher stronger.

Is it just me or is the scoring far more generous for the men than it is for the women? McKayla Maroney’s near-perfect vault in the Teams Final event (also in 2012) was given a lower score than some of these vaults that were excellent but not near-perfect.
