Most men think that a summer suit just has to be lightweight and that's all they can do. While a lightweight fabric helps to keep you cooler, what's much more important is the open weave of the fabric because that way, you feel every breeze that cools you down. So, when you buy a summer suit, the first thing you should look at is how is the weave, is it open and is it airy?
A very popular summer fabric that is very open is called fresco, it's a wool fabric and I'm wearing it here right now. It's actually not super lightweight, but quite airy and hence, it feels cooler than a seersucker suit that is lighter but has a much tighter weave.
Once you've decided on an airy fabric, you have to look at the lining. Personally, I enjoy sleeve lining because it's easy to get in there and my sleeves fall nicely and I don't get stuck. At the end of the day, it's a personal preference. If you're in a really hot climate, I would skip any kind of lining and try to be as light and airy as possible.
In terms of fabric weight, you should go for about 7 ounce or 210 grams because that's already really lightweight but you still get a nice drape of the fabric. Most companies offer a tropical, which is a wool, worsted fabric with an open weave that's well suited for warm and hot climates. So if you can't find a fresco, look for a tropical. On the other hand, seersucker is easily available, It has very light colors in light blue and white or white brown.
White, beige, and off-white are typical summer colors because they reflect the light and at the same time, you can easily see through them especially, if you have a pocket lining. Therefore, either skip the pocket lining when you have these kinds of garments in lighter colors or use a fabric that's very close to your skin color.
Another very important aspect of men's summer suits is the cut. I suggest you go with single breasted, with one or two buttons because it's great, it's a larger V which allows more airflow and you don't have an overlapping layer of fabric that insulates.
In terms of shirts, you also want to have open weave because again, it helps you breathe, it stays cool, there's a tight fabric like a twill, it'll actually just feel warm. If it's very hot outside, sometimes it makes sense to wear an undershirt and even though it creates an additional layer, it absorbs the sweat.
In terms of neckwear, a bowtie is actually preferable because it just sits on your.
In terms of accessories, a Panama hat is really the way to go because it keeps the sun out of your face and makes you look very dapper.
In terms of shoes, it pays to have something like white summer bucks, spectators, or suede loafers but stay tuned for a separate video of men's summer shoes. Instead of wearing suits, it's actually a great idea to have odd combinations in summer because it's more relaxed. Seersucker pants, either a part of a suit or just on their own, are a perfect companion for all kinds of blazers. You can wear it with navy, light gray, green, even brown and they just look really classic.
Another wonderful summer fabric is linen and the traditional color is tobacco brown linen. Linen wrinkles a lot but it does so in a very sophisticated way and even though it's heavy, it's also very airy.
Don't be afraid of the wrinkles in the linen suit. If you're not sure what kind of color to get, either get a tobacco brown that's very light or something mid-blue, or royal blue. Of course, you'll also find linen blends and the addition of silk can make them a little softer but again, always pay attention to the openness of the weave.

I am totally in love with linen, from jacket to underwear - everything in linen. It really pays off in the summer. For those of you who don't like how linen wrinkles, I'd suggest you to get atleast a linen shirt, because it won't be visible under the suit. As always, a quality video!

Same...I try to wear linen at every chance I get in the summer. The wrinkles are so characteristic and nice compared to other fabrics

One exception from preferring single breasted jackets in the summer: I think a lightweight half-lined dinner jacket for summer should be double breasted. Only this style allows a gentleman to skip the waistcoat or cummerbund and I guess the overlapping fabric in the front adds less heat than even a backless waistcoat or a cummerbund. By the way... if one wants to opt for a white (!) dinner jacket in the peak of summer or in the south just remember "Casablanca"... yes, there is something like a great looking DB white dinner jacket!

While I appreciate this guidance on warm weather men's fashion, and the looks that you've shown off make you look far dapper than I, unfortunately, I just can't see myself wearing arm and leg covering or a jacket like that at all and I've pretty much relegated my summer wardrobe (in hot weather) to some nice looking shorts and some nice button-down tastefully-patterned short-sleeved shirts with the exception of special occasions in which case, I try to only wear a full summer suit as little as I can get away with (a few hours at a time). Don't get me wrong, I understand the fashion faux pas of comparing such a look with a summer suit, but I have not yet found a summer suit that can rival the necessary comfort in the summer heat in the outdoors. Are there any extreme-temperature wardrobe choices that I may have overlooked to improve my look? I certainly appreciate the guidance. thank you!

If you like, you could always forgo the jacket, and just wear a waistcoat, short shleeve button-up, and some nice pants. I'd recommend a bowtie with this look as-well, and you might actually be able to get away with a skimmer, or if you prefer you could wear a panama hat. For shoes just stay away from leather, really. If you'd rather something else in place of a bowtie you could also go with a string tie, although I'm not sure of the fashion relevance of those at the moment, however they look dapper nonetheless.

understandable, here's a few humble suggestions 1) ditch the jacket (leave it in your car if you're outdoor) , and go with just the vest , maybe choose something in a light tone such as white, pink, green, blue etc 2) look out for quality polo shirts 3) replace your shoes with something without lace , i.e a loafer or boat shoe

I have a stupid question regarding a tab collar shirt. I've never owned one, but recently bought one, that hasn't arrived, my question is, do you fasten the tab first, then tie your necktie knot, or do you tie a loose necktie knot, then fasten the tab, and then make a final tighten of your tie? Thank you!

Porthos So I'm in Oz too, I go linen all the way, if you have to wear a suit go light colours and unstructured. I'd usually go for white linen shirt and barley coloured suit. The thing so many Aussie do wrong is wearing dark colours in summer, it's too damn hot, light colours all the bloody way.

It's a problem mate, not many KZread advisors actually live in a climate as hit as ours and so they don't really understand. Having said that the excellent tutorial here does make most of the salient points: stick to light colours, go for unlined jackets with relatively open-weave fabrics and test out the clothes against sunlight or breezes to verify. I totally agree with Jared C who likes linen, that's the way to go but there are other options depending on how much time/money/effort you put into your wardrobe. I'd add go for the no-socks option to reduce heat. Give your shoes as best aftercare as you can and simply ditch them when they start to smell bad. With respect to under blazer wear, go for the lightest fabric you can and sleeveless where possible. Think Sonny Crockett. Lastly, soak it up; we live in a hot place and looking good is a battle on hot days when you want to be well dressed.

Wearing a ribbed T-shirt or sleeveless shirt helps too esp. when you're gonna sweat a lot. I even tried wearing one in the gym and it took quite a while for me to actually "feel" sweaty. As for decreasing sweat production, I didn't do it scientifically so I'm not quite sure how much better it is at that. But it "felt" like it , if that helps. Oh I live in the Philippines btw so it's hot AND humid.
